Any scenario the Yankees get Scherzer?
Mark P
9:11
Zero chance

Ian Happ for Watson, what do you think ?
Mark P
9:13
Tony Watson?  Not totally out of the question, but I wonder if Watson could get more back in another deal.

Happ's struggles this season has really lowered his value, given that he also isn't exactly tearing it up at Triple-A

Are there insurance policies for teams when a player gets hurt and can't play ever again? Do the policies pay the remaining money left on the contract?
Mark P
9:17
Many teams get insurance on big contracts, though the insurance usually doesn't cover the entire thing.  The Mets got about 75% of David Wright's salary back, for example

The 2019 All Stars v Bugs Bunny. Who wins?
Mark P
9:18
Bugs' ability to bend the laws of physics is a big plus.  Then again, I'm not convinced Mike Trout can't do the same thing.
Girsch
9:19
If I had a do over, do I keep Luke Voit and not trade for Goldschmidt?
Mark P
9:19
This would be Cardinals GM Mike Girsch

And yeah, I have to imagine the Cards are wondering what they missed in Luke Voit.

Do you think the Redsox will make anymore trade acquisitions?  Or bolster their bullpen with minor league options?
Mark P
9:21
The luxury tax threshold is such a huge factor in Boston's decisions that it will be tough for them to make any major trades unless they're very creative.
My guess is lower-level trades.  And despite what Dave Dombrowski said the other day, I doubt they're done
Bob Loblaw
9:22
Is it too dramatic to say that the Twins blew it by not sweeping in Cleveland (and left with 6.5 game lead)? Would 8.5 deficit have tipped Cleveland into selling mode?
Mark P
9:22
Probably a bit dramatic.  Any team would be satisfied winning two of three against their closest rival.
Trader Joe
9:23
Should fans be frustrated with teams not making moves?  Some teams could have really benefitted from the likes of Cashner!?!
Mark P
9:23
Keep in mind that we're still over two weeks from the trade deadline.  Lots of time left for teams to get more active
Oh, Hi Mark!
9:24
Ian Kennedy for Wil Myers.  Padres pay down $10M over the last two seasons of the deal.  Royals need COF/1B going forward.
Mark P
9:25
I doubt the Royals would have any interest in this scenario.  First of all, first base/corner outfielders are generally the easiest position to fill, so KC can find such players at a much lesser price than Myers' contract (even partially paid down)

Im thinking the Padres rotation will be fine with out trading for an ace (long term). Gore comes up next year coupled with Paddack, Lamet and some combo of Joey Fuego, Laurer and the 6 plus top flight guys we have in the minors. Am I wrong?
Mark P
9:28
Any team would love to have the Padres' young pitching depth.  The thing is, they're basically all still unproven quantities for now.  Will ALL of them flop as solid big league starters?  Doubtful, based on sheer volume.  But it's even more doubtful they'll all turn into good MLB pitchers.

The other thing is, the Padres are itching to contend in the near future.  They likely don't have the patience to wait the two, three, or four more years it'll take before they truly know what they have in every pitcher
Christian
9:29
Who do you see the Rays targeting in the next couple of weeks? Bullpen arms? Right handed power hitter?
Mark P
9:29
Don't forget starting pitching.  One more solid starter (or even a decent innings-eater second-tier type) would go a long way towards helping that pitching mix

syndegard , vargas  and frazier to yanks florial, urshela and 3 minor league pitchers to mets
Mark P
9:30
I have my doubts that the Mets would make any type of significant trade with the Yankees, let alone a huge deal like this.

9:32
Hello Mark, if the pirates were willing to trade Felipe Vazquez to the Dodgers, is Ruiz, Jeter Downs, Josiah Gray, and a couple other prospects enough to get a deal done?
Mark P
9:32
Pirates would take that offer in a heartbeat.  But there's no way the Dodgers offer that much of a haul for a closer
John
9:33
Do you think teams value prospects too highly?
Mark P
9:33
I'm doing to give the biggest fence-sitting answer ever by saying "yes and no."
9:34
Yes in the sense that so many of these prospects ultimately don't pan out.

No in the sense that baseball's financial structure makes having a cost-controlled young star such a huge benefit to your team that teams are reluctant to part with such assets

Are the Tigers playing it smart with the high price tags on Boyd and Castellanos, or will they end up with underwhelming returns at the deadline?
Mark P
9:36
Like i said earlier, there aren't many teams selling right now, so they can try and take advantage of the market by asking for the moon and stars for their players.  If a team accepts?  That's great for the Tigers.  If there aren't any takers now?  Nothing's stopping the Tigers from dropping their ask in a week or so

Could Tampa be a darkhorse for Stroman? Jays have traded to AL East before.
Mark P
9:37
I wouldn't rule it out

Any relievers on reneweable or arbitration contracts that could be worthwhile for Boston to pick up? 9.0/K9 types. Maybe E.Diaz from NYM?
Mark P
9:39
I can imagine a lot of teams being interested in Diaz on a buy-low trade, even despite his struggles this season.

But if you're the Mets, there's no way you can move Diaz right now when his value is probably at its absolute lowest.

Pache & Wright for Vasquez & Marte any chance ??????
Mark P
9:40
I doubt the Pirates package Vasquez and Marte together in the same trade (if either is traded at all).  But if they did, they would need a lot more than just a two-prospect package in return
Brian
9:41
Any chance at all the Mets try(and are successful) in unloading Cano?
Mark P
9:42
They can try, but Cano's value is rock-bottom right now
