I suspect the amount of money Arizona would eat differs from team to team since every club's situation is different.  If one suitor has prospects the D'Backs really want, for instance, they might be willing to eat more to make it happen.
But don't forget, Greinke has a 15-team no-trade clause that likely covers just about every real contender in baseball.  And he's also said openly that he doesn't want to be dealt anywhere.  It wouldn't surprise me if some teams have made inquiries only to be told that Greinke won't waive the clause

How much does Tony Watson cost the Dodgers?
Mark P
10:11
I can't help but think the Giants would demand more from the Dodgers than they would from any other team, just based on rivalry purposes
ChiSoxFan
10:12
What should the ChiSox do at the deadline buy? Sell? Hold?
Mark P
10:14
They'll look to move some of their pending free agents (except Abreu, who I would guess is staying long term).  They *might* look for a long-term piece like they did with Machado last year, though Chicago's Machado pursuit seems like it was uniquely specific to their interest in him alone,
As in, just because they were willing to make the splurge for Machado doesn't mean they'll do the same for another player this year (or in the offseason)

Giants seem like they may hold. Any creative buy/sell possibilities you imagine? Reliever for second basemen?
Mark P
10:16
I don't believe the Giants will entirely hold, but you're right, I can see them trying for a more MLB-ready player if they keep winning games.
Mark M
10:17
So if your the reds what would the astros have to give up for Luis Castillo
Mark P
10:17
The Reds aren't moving Luis Castillo, period

The Pirates should trade Vazquez, Marte, and Bell ( along with Dickerson and Cabrera), but do they have the fortitude to do it?  They can set themselves up nicely.
Mark P
10:20
In theory yes, but that's a real gutting of the roster.  The Pirates might as well go into full rebuild at that point and just tell the fans to wait until 2023.  That's not a step this front office and ownership seem willing to take
Walter
10:20
Indians are now buyers being 3 games out of first?
Mark P
10:22
I don't think Cleveland was ever *not* going to be a buyer to some extent, barring a huge collapse.  As much as the Tribe wanted to cut payroll last winter, they did so with an eye towards will contending this year.  They unloaded EE but brought in Carlos Santana, for instance.

Cleveland don't make any splashy trades, but they'll look to add a piece or two, probably an outfielder or maybe a reliever.  If someone totally blows them away with an offer for Bauer, I can see them being both buyers and sellers.

What's the chance the Cubs actually move some major-league pieces before this trade deadline?  Kyle Schwarber seems the likeliest to get moved, since there's arguably some market for him, but who would want the likes of Addison Russell, Daniel Descalso, and Albert Almora for anything more than plugging holes in the 25-man roster as bad teams play out the string?
Mark P
10:25
Almora has three years of control, so he has some value to a team that thinks it can get him on track at the plate.  Even Russell has two arb years remaining, though if you're a team with actual interest in Russell, I wonder if you wouldn't just wait until the offseason to see if you could get him for nothing, since he seems like a non-tender candidate to me.
But you're right, Russell/Almora obviously aren't headliners in any notable trade.

Tonight's MLB Game been played in Cooperstown and been NL Hall of Famers verus AL Hall of Famers?
Mark P
10:27
I won't lie, I would love to watch something like that

what do you think is more likely, The Giants win the world series, or, on the last day of the season, once safely out of contention, Bocce tells Pabloval that he gets to have a game where he plays each position for one inning. Then
Mark P
10:28
Option B, please!

That A’s Twins series this weekend had a playoff feel huh? Think the reinforcements coming in the form of Puk, Cotton, and Manaea are enough or do you see the A’s making a play for a controllable starter.....Stroman...
Mark P
10:30
As promising as these young arms are, Manaea is the only one with any real MLB success, and who knows how any of them will fare after such long injury layoffs?  The A's would be making a real leap of faith if they're solely expecting this group to represent their midseason upgrades, which is why I'd guess they'll also look for something more stable.  (More stable than Homer Bailey, at least.)

which side hangs up first? Schwarber & Russell for Whit & Ian Kennedy
Mark P
10:31
The Royals hang up before Theo is even finished talking

10:32
Are teams hoarding prospects a little too much? I'm not saying they have to trade their top prospects for rentals but it seems like a lot of teams, especially those that have depth like the Dodgers and Braves, are too afraid to trade their prospects. Especially when their is no room for them on the 25 man roster or in the future.
Mark P
10:32
Wait, I thought I was Mark?!
10:35
Moreso than ever before in baseball, having a young and controllable player posting star-level numbers is an incredibly valuable asset.  If a team has a kid they legitimately think can do that, they definitely want to see what they have.

Buster Olney made a good point about the Braves today.  While the Braves have a deep system and could theoretically afford to deal from this so-called surplus, these young players are extra valuable to them because a) they're basically still locked out of the international signing market for a few more years) and b) they appear unwilling or unable to make big free agent signings.

So the Braves need Pache, Anderson, Waters, etc. in fold to eventually step up and fill holes on the MLB roster, since Atlanta will have some difficulty easily filling those holes down the road
10:36
And beyond just Atlanta....teams also hoard these prospects because at the end of the day, two-thirds of them aren't going to pan out.  The frustrating/scary thing is that teams have no idea who the bad 66% will be, so they're loath to make the wrong choice early in these kids' careers

The Red Sox got blanked by the O's and lost the first game of their weekend series. Should I still have hope or are their horrigic inconsistencies too much to overcome?
Red Sox sellers?
10:37
Do the Red Sox admit it's not their year and sell?  And why waste prospects on a Closer!
Mark P
10:38
These are two of the approximately 40 questions I've gotten in this chat about the Red Sox being deadline sellers.  And it's not just anxious fans....you're starting to see more and more of these stories written by media members as well
10:39
It still feels a bit early?  Boston has such a strong core of talent that nobody would be surprised if the Sox suddenly ripped off an eight-game winning streak.
Atlanta
10:40
Who is the most likely option to land in Atlanta, Kirby Yates or Ken Giles?
Mark P
10:40
Giles because the the Blue Jays are more clearly sellers.  San Diego isn't moving Yates unless they get a sweetheart offer: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/latest-on-padres-kirby-yates.ht...

Think the Astros extend anyone this offseason, or is their financial situation too tight to extend anyone?
Mark P
10:46
They'll talk to Springer and Correa about extensions, but I sort of feel like the Astros already made the key signings (Altuve, Bregman, Verlander) they really wanted to make.  Springer could be the exception, I have a hunch he's likelier than Correa to stay in Houston long-term
