MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

i get the feeling the Dodgers basically look at every position, out of due diligence.  On paper, they don't need starting pitching, but that hasn't stopped them in the past (and they aren't wrong, given all the injury concerns in their rotation)

What is Arizona realistically looking for in return for Greinke? If the team takes on all of his salary do they really have to give anything up? Just thinking the brewers could open up their wallets.
Mark P
12:25
One of the major issues with Greinke is that he has stated that he doesn't want to leave the D'Backs, and he has a 15-team no-trade list.  So I would imagine it's hard to find a team that isn't on that list, AND has the financial means and minor league depth to swing a Greinke deal.

As much as the D'Backs have said they're not in a total rebuild, however, I wonder what they would do if a team actually did offer to take all of Greinke's contract off their hands, in exchange for just a couple of minor prospects.

Unsure about Cleveland’s approach. They clearly need offense to compete with real contenders, but where do they get it? Realistic targets? Urias for Bauer? Insight, please!
Mark P
12:26
They were rumored today to have interest in Domingo Santana, who would be an interesting get for them.

In terms of offense, the biggest thing Cleveland has going for it is that Jose Ramirez seems to finally gotten on track.  If he hits like early-2018 Ramirez, that lineup looks a lot better, suddenly

12:27
Jake Lamb to Cardinals along with Holland and Chaflin?
Mark P
12:28
I don't see how Lamb would be a fit for STL.  And man, imagine poor Greg Holland's reaction upon being told he was being dealt to the Cardinals again
MC
12:29
Does Anthony Rendon get moved?
Mark P
12:29
Nope.  The Nats are a wild card team, if the playoffs began today
Chris
12:29
The Rays are rumored to be after bats instead of pitching...seems like pitching should  be their top priorty with Snell and Glasnow out don't ya think?
Mark P
12:30
You would think so, but don't forget, this is the same team whose rotation was literally Snell and four openers for a stretch last season.  More than being committed to the opener strategy, Tampa Bay seems to hate the idea of just running an innings-eater type out there.

And landing a better type of starter would have the type of prospect price tag that the Rays are likely hesitant to give up
MN
12:31
Are any teams taking a serious look at Mike Leake?
Mark P
12:33
This is completely speculative on my part, but Leake would seem like the kind of pitcher the Rays could use right now.  Not a huge name, but a decent pitcher and not even really that expensive --- he's owed $25.3MM through 2020, and that's really more like $18.7MM given that the Cardinals are covering part of it
Plus the Mariners are apparently willing to eat some money to accommodate a trade.  PLUS, the Rays and M's make trades all the time!

Are we hoping for a late breaking trade with this chat, or giving me an excuse to stay up later before a work day on monday
Mark P
12:36
Just as this question came up, the Dodgers acquired Kristopher Negron from Seattle.  So yes, news is all around us!

12:37
Any major moves for us?
Mark P
12:37
(This would be the Cubs' braintrust, btw)

I hesitate to say 'major,' since the Cubs seem so hamstrung by the luxury tax.  I doubt a blockbuster is happening, but some type of more modest deal is possible

12:38
Giants cant possibly be foolish enough to not sell can they?  They aren't winning WS this year so sell, sell, sell.
Mark P
12:39
Giants ownership clearly puts a priority on being competitive and selling tickets.  I can't blame them for it, since don't we wish all owners were like that?

As many have said, I can see the Giants both buying and selling.  They might more a reliever, for instance, but for a player who can help them this year (i.e. a pitcher or an infielder)

12:40
You are a grizzled trade deadline veteran. Is this the oddest trade period you've yet seen?
Mark P
12:41
As someone who recently grew a beard for the first time, I'm delighted that someone finally called me "grizzled"!

It's been strangely quiet.  So many teams technically in the hunt, yet that has resulted in a lot of teams waiting until the semi-last minute to see who else turns into a seller
12:42
But this could ultimately result in a big flurry over the next few days.  As reporters mentioned today about that Indians/Rays deal, for instance, it's the type of "40-man roster crunch" trade that Tampa might have normally held off on until August....except there aren't any more August trades

Astros get .... at deadline?
Mark P
12:42
They've got to be getting some type of starting pitcher.  I can't see them going into the postseason with just Verlander, Cole, and Miley.  Don't get me wrong, any team would love that top two, but the depth is lacking.

Who’s the best mascot in baseball right now?
Mark P
12:43
Phanatic Phorever

12:45
Do you think the Astros recent success with Urquidy and Armenteros makes it possible they won’t make a trade for a starter and instead focus on another Pressly like addition in the bullpen, especially with their recent struggles?
Mark P
12:45
I think there's a better chance the Astros land a SP and those guys move to the bullpen

12:47
What are the odds that the Stroman deal was the biggest we will see this deadline?
Mark P
12:47
Pretty slim.  I have to think we'll still see at least a couple of big moves to come

12:47
Who are some good bench players that the Dodgers could target to backup Seager?
Mark P
12:48
The Dodgers should try to land a utility type, like, say, the Mariners' Kristopher Negron

Hey, wait a minute!
Howard
12:48
What am I not getting? Teams fighting for playoff spots with lots of question marks, waiting till the end to make a move to get better. Why? Are they even trying to contend or are they just playing their fan bases. Some teams should have made pitching moves 2 weeks ago
Mark P
12:50
Rightly or wrongly, teams don't want to give up young assets unless they absolutely have to.  And the earlier you make a trade, the price you pay is generally higher.

For instance, early in "deadline season," you get lots of stuff like the Jays wanting Gleyber Torres for Stroman.  Closer to the deadline, prices come down

12:51
Diaz, Ramos, and Wheeler to Dodgers for Urias, Will Smith, Ross Stripling. Who says no?
Mark P
12:51
Dodgers give that one a big thumbs-down
Jon
12:51
Who is your World Series matchup today? And what trade do both of those teams make to improve?
Mark P
12:52
My pick has been Yankees vs. Dodgers for a couple of months now.  NYY obviously needs some starting pitching, but their lineup is so good that I wouldn't be shocked if they load up on relievers and try getting creative (i.e. openers) down the stretch or even in the postseason.

Dodgers could use some bullpen help, but other than that, they're in pretty good shape overall
