What was Manfred thinking eliminating the August waiver wire deadline? Some teams needed a little extra time to gauge whether to buy or sell.
Mark P
9:31
Blaming the commissioner himself is somewhat unfair, as many teams and front office executives were in favour of eliminating the August waiver trade period just to remove an extra layer of red tape.  Could be that some of those execs are having second thoughts after seeing it in action.

I'm not the first to suggest this, but I'd like to see a later deadline of August 10 or so, to give teams a bit more time to figure out if they're buying or selling.

Do you think teams asked for more from NYY than from other teams since they Yankees were so needy? It seems that they should have gotten Stroman or Bauer.
Mark P
9:33
This is an underrated factor in trade discussions.  It's definitely true that teams ask for more from certain clubs based on a lot of reasons, be it a deep farm system ("come on, you have tons of great prospects, so you can afford to give up three minor leaguers instead of two!") or perhaps some rivalry between the two teams.
9:34
Or the third reason, as you mentioned, a perceived need on the other team

9:34
How many Yankees need to get hurt before Clint Frazier gets a shot?
Mark P
9:35
At the rate so many Yankees are hitting the IL, we might yet find out.

But as much as NYY fans are curious about Frazier's status, it should be noted that the Yankees' "other" outfielders have been more or less tearing it up.  Maybin, Tauchman, etc.

9:37
Frankie Lindor is the most underrated player in the majors, true or false?
Mark P
9:38
Who's underrating Lindor?!  I'm not sure what his Q-rating is beyond baseball fans, but everyone must know by now that Lindor is one of the best in the sport
Chris
9:39
What do you think of the sudden collapse of the Pirates?
Mark P
9:39
It wasn't too shocking considering how their run differential looked for much of the season, and there's so little room for error in that division.
Nate
9:40
Are you shocked there wasn’t more trade talk about Inciarte? He’s got a nice team friendly deal and the braves seemed more interested in playing other guys
Mark P
9:41
Markakis' injury ended any chance there might have been in an Inciarte trade.  I've written this before about him, that contract doesn't look quite so "team-friendly" to a trade suitor considering that Inciarte has been hurt for much of the year and his bat completely fell off
Sonny Bustamante
9:41
To be or not to be concerned about Shane Greene?
Mark P
9:42
It's been about as bad a start as possible, and some regression was inevitable given Greene's peripherals.  But that said, it's only been a couple of games.
9:46
Sorry, had to take a short break there to post some news....Diamondbacks DFA Zack Godley

9:47
Do the Tiggers trade Boyd this offseason? And do they get the Gleyber-level stud or the Quintana-level package them claim to demand?
Mark P
9:47
They'll likely explore more trades, but they're definitely not getting anything that grand in return.
The greatest game
9:48
Have the dbacks made up for the Shelby Miller debacle? They did a great job building up the farm in the Goldschmidt and Greinke trades.
Mark P
9:49
Mike Hazen has made some canny moves since taking over the D'Backs, and he's done so while keeping the team competitive at the same time.
Scott S.
9:50
How can Ross Atkins come out and say the best deal they were going to get for Stroman was 3 days before the deadline??? Surely someone would have got desperate on Wednesday just before the deadline and would have offered a better deal. I’m blown away by the whole thing.
Mark P
9:51
The Stroman return looked a lot less unusual after the deadline, when it was clear that teams simply weren't giving up much of anything in the way of top-level prospect depth.  You'd think teams like the Yankees, Twins, Cardinals, maybe the Braves would've done more, but ATL and Minny just focused on their bullpens while New York and STL basically did nothing
GM RY
9:52
Should a team like the Padres or Phillies make a hard push for Cole.
Mark P
9:52
I'd imagine Gerrit Cole will be getting a ton of attention this offseason, and those two teams will definitely be in the mix
Irate Nate
9:53
How surprised were you that the reds added at the deadline? And this most likely points to more head-scratching deals in the off season, right?
Mark P
9:54
Moderately surprised, though that 2020 rotation looks awfully impressive.  If the Reds turn to adding position players on short-term deals this winter, they could have the makings of a legit contender
Cleveland Fan
9:55
Thoughts on the Bauer trade and odds of catching up to Minnesota?
Cash
9:55
Padres got fleeced in the Bauer deal
Mark P
9:57
To answer the first question, I think Cleveland will indeed end up as AL Central champs, in a tight race.

Secondly, I don't think San Diego made out badly at all in that deal.  As a defensively-limited corner outfielder (who might really be a DH), Reyes was expendable for the Padres, and they turned him and Allen into a very interesting young CF prospect.
Padres dealt from two areas of depth (corner OF and young pitching) to get the rarest of items at this deadline, a top-40 type of prospect.

MLB need too implement the uncle rule instead of having teams put in position players to pitch, drags the game on to long, especially when your trying too shorten game time
Mark P
10:01
There's an idea that hasn't been mentioned too often --- should baseball have a "mercy rule"?  Say, if a team is losing by 10 runs after seven innings, should a game be called?  You'll lose maybe one epic comeback per season, but you'll save many more minutes and hours on multiple long-since-decided games.
10:02
Would you support a "mercy rule" in baseball? (Game is called if one team is leading by 10+ runs after seven innings)

I should have moved Grandal and Moustakas, right?
Mark P
10:03
Stearns is the Brewers' GM

No, neither of those deals would've made too much sense.  It's easy to say yes in hindsight if the team falls out of the race, but the Crew would've had to obtain a real haul for either player if such a trade was made

10:06
Is Matt Boyd for real?  Breakthrough or bubble?
Mark P
10:06
I don't think he's a front-of-the-rotation guy, but it's not out of the question to call him a decent mid-rotation arm.

With rumors of the D-Backs possibly moving to LV why them and not a team with a worse market/fans like the A’s or Rays?
Mark P
10:09
For more on this from earlier in the week: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/08/diamondbacks-have-considered-ne...

The D'Backs have been angling for a new ballpark for a while, so their interest in Nevada could be just a way to put the heat on Phoenix officials, or some legitimate due diligence in checking out alternate sites.  The A's seem committed to working out something in Oakland for the moment, while the Rays can't move anywhere until 2027 due to their lease (Montreal rumors notwithstanding)

Do the Royals resign Alex Gordon? I can't imagine exercising his option. Seems like he'd  be clogging up a roster spot when you have a glut of outfielders needing a look in a year they aren't expected to be competitive.
