The option won't be picked up, and it could be a moot point anyway if Gordon retires: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/alex-gordon-discusses-future-pl...
If he does keep playing, I can definitely see KC bringing him back for an inexpensive one-year deal, if nothing else than for him to take a victory lap for the fans

Pirates are hard to watch right now.  I get holding Vasquez, but  should they have traded Marte while his stock is still relatively high?
Mark P
10:13
Apart from Marte getting hurt or having a major cold streak to finish off the season, there will still be a big trade market for him this winter.
Chris Archer

Do the Pirates pick up my $9M option for next season?
Mark P
10:15
Absolutely

Why wasn’t Cashman willing to move Andujar and Frazier to get the starting pitching they need? LaMahieu and Urshela were All-Stars this year, which should’ve made Andujar expendable. This puts more pressure on Severino to come back healthy in time for the playoffs.
Mark P
10:16
Frazier sure, but what teams are making big offers for Andujar given that's in the midst of a season-ending injury?

What, exactly, is the point of MLBTR from August-November, now that "TRADES" aren't allowed and that word is literally in the title of your website?
Mark P
10:18
But "rumors" about trades never die down.  Loophole!

Is trying to win the new market inefficiency? It seems like with so many teams tanking, just getting good players is the answer.
Mark P

This is a blunt way of putting it, but there's something to this logic.  Jeff Passan mentioned something akin to this within his look at how the Greinke trade came together: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/27302244/inside-zack-greinke-deal-...
10:21
The basic point was, the Astros knew that getting Greinke would be even more impactful by dint of the fact that he was basically the only top-flight starter going to a contender

Again the Rays: are we more of a threat now or do
Mark P
10:22
The Rays had a quietly solid trade deadline, and I'd still consider them a major threat to win a wild card

I want to point out that Mike Hazen was not responsible for Shelby Miller
Mark P
10:23
Very true.  Hazen inherited something of a difficult situation but he has done well to smooth things out
Paul Goldschmidt
10:23
Did STL make a mistake not grabbing a starter while they could?
Mark P
10:24
This question, btw, is one of many "why did the Cardinals not do anything at the deadline???" questions in this chat, so I guess I'll generally address all of them here
10:25
In short, the Cards (like many teams) simply found asking prices too high.  I also wonder if management thinks this team, even with an upgrade or two, is still not quite championship-caliber

As a White Sox fan I’m discouraged that the front office didn’t have a good plan for this season. I’d like them to try out minor league players and they keep bringing in retreads. What are they doing really?
Mark P
10:27
I think their main plan was to sign Manny Machado, which would've obviously jumpstarted things.  But since that big signing didn't happen, the Sox decided to just stick to the young kids and give them a chance to develop
10:28
Going into 2020, I'd expect the White Sox to start looking into more established MLB players, if nothing quite on the level of a Machado signing
Nick Castellanos
10:28
Was I low-key the best addition to a team at the deadline. I’ve been smoking the ball since I got to Chicago!
Mark P
10:29
Castellanos has sounded so downcast about his trade situation for the last several months....he must've felt like a weight was coming off his back once he was finally dealt to a contender.

Let's call it a night, see everyone next week in the chat zone!
