Gregorius makes a lot of sense for the Reds.  I do wonder if he'd remain in New York via a qualifying offer, since Didi might prefer to try free agency again in 2020-21 after (theoretically) a full season of good health and good production

Kershaw, maeda, Buehler, Urias, May, Gonsolin,  stripling... do the dodgers even need to add starting pitching for 20 or resign Hill/ryu?
Mark P
10:14
That list of starters is long on injury history, and half of them are short on MLB experience.  Plus, the Dodgers like having as much pitching as possible on hand.  I can see them bringing one of Ryu or Hill back, if not necessarily both

Would you opt out if you were JMart?
Mark P
10:17
JD Martinez would be leaving three years and $62.5MM on the table if he opted out of his Red Sox contract.

If I'm him, I'm asking myself a) can I really find a bigger contract than that this winter, given how teams are less and less likely to pay big for DH-only players and b) how many teams are actually in need of such a player?
10:19
Since he's more or less limited just to AL teams, look at the contenders.  The Angels, Twins, A's, Astros, Rangers, Yankees are either set at DH or have too many other guys in the mix who could feasibly DH.  The Rays and probably the Indians can't afford him.  The other AL teams aren't planning to contend, unless a club like the White Sox decides to make a big splash, but does JD really want to go to a team like Chicago rather than a more clear-cut contender?
In short, my guess is that he doesn't opt out.

Does G.M. Dave Dom. lose his job with the Redsox
Mark P
10:21
Sorry to follow this one up so soon after the Cora question, but again.....the Red Sox WON THE WORLD SERIES just last year.  I don't think Dombrowski or Cora are remotely in any danger of being fired

Pleasac, Plutko, Civale. The Tribe can find pitching under a cabbage leaf. Could any of these pitchers be major trade pieces?
Mark P
10:22
I feel like the Tribe already made their big pitching trade by unloading Bauer.

What do you think about the Astros starting pitching in 2020?  Verlander and Greinke are old and will decline.  Forrest Whitley is often injured and/or suspended.  Cole and Miley will be gone.
Mark P
10:25
We haven't seen much evidence of a decline for JV or Greinke yet, and though it has to be a consideration given both pitchers' age, I'd still count on them both being very good in 2020.

As we've seen with Morton and Miley, the Astros can do a good job in getting veteran arms back on track.  Don't forget about Aaron Sanchez, too.
I think Houston will add another second-tier arm type this winter, but even with Cole and maybe Miley leaving, their rotation should still be a strength next yera

I see the Mets made a Panik move.

I'd groan, but I made a similar Panik pun in a tweet a few days ago

The White Sox need significant rotation and lineup help yet feel they can contend next year. Is this the off-season they finally land a big time free agent or do they come up just short again?
Mark P
10:28
If nothing else, the Machado pursuit indicated to the world (and to player agents) that the White Sox are willing to go big if they really like a player.  Now, whether they're willing to go big again or if Machado was just a unique case, it remains to be seen, especially since it seems like undercut themselves with Manny.

Why on Earth would the Chi Sox agree to lose a home game in a temp 8000 seat stadium?
Mark P
10:29
Sacrificing one home date for the greater good of playing in what will surely be one of the most-watched regular season games in recent memory?  It seems like a good move to me
Will Smith
10:30
Am I the Fresh Prince of San Francisco or the Fresh Prince of Los Angeles?
Mark P
10:30
Will Smith (the actor) needs to attend the next Giants/Dodgers game and get a picture on the field with these two players.  Someone make this happen!

What do you see happening to Clint Frazier?
Mark P
10:31
Part of me thinks he's ultimately still a trade chip, though the Yankees obviously think highly of his hitting, and they certainly are in need of OF depth given all the injuries.
My guess, by another 55-45 margin, is that he's in the pinstripes on Opening Day 2020
10:32
That's all for tonight's chat, see everyone next week!
