I think Trout has MVP in the bag, though Devers is having an amazing year.

As for the extension, Devers has four seasons remaining (one pre-arb year, three arb years) before he hits free agency.  So he'll hit the open market going into his age-27 season, thus I can see him having a strong argument for a ten-year deal if he keeps hitting like he's hitting.
10:13
So in short, I doubt he'd take six/$120MM.  That said, I don't know his personal situation, or if he'd be open to locking in a huge fortune right now rather than take the risk of injury, performance downturn, etc. in the future.  But my guess is if the Sox approached him about a long-term extension in the spring, Devers would want a lot more than $120MM

Do you think the orioles are doing a good job starting to rebuild?
Evan
10:14
When will the Orioles be competitive
Mark P
10:15
Too early to really judge their rebuild, though they're making a smart (if obvious) move to get their international scouting department up to the level of other teams.  Adley Rutschman is, by all accounts, a star in the making, so that looks like a great use of the #1 pick
At the risk of writing a team off for years on end....I'd guess 2023?

What will the Cardinals do with Matt Carpenter mired in a season long slump after getting a contract extension?...He has a 2 Million Club Option before they have to opt in to the rest of his 2 year extension
Mark P
10:18
To clarify, Carpenter's old contract was overwritten by his new extension.  He is guaranteed $18.5MM in both 2020 and 2021, and then the Cardinals have an $18.5MM club option ($2MM buyout) for 2022
10:19
As to what they'll do with him....good question.  Not much they can do besides hope 2019 was just an off-year.

Are there any free agent OFs out there that can be plugged in to our outfield mix right away?
Mark P
10:21
(Our = Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen)
The Mets' biggest need would seem to be a proper center fielder, but the pickings are very slim on that front this winter...

What are the chances that I see Giancarlo Stanton in a Giants uniform next season?
Mark P
10:23
When the Giants were interested in Stanton two offseasons ago, they were ultimately worried that he wouldn't hold up as an outfielder over the long term (at least not without a DH spot to give him some rest).

Two years and a lot of injuries later, I doubt the Giants are suddenly even more interested.

Is Wheeler resigning with the Mets? He would real good on the South Side.
Mark P
10:26
I wonder if the Stroman trade was done in part because the Mets have a feeling Wheeler leaves in the offseason.  (Or, the other theory, because they want to re-sign Wheeler but then trade Syndergaard, which is more complicated.)

If Wheeler left, the Mets still have a top three of DeGrom/Thor/Stroman, which a lot of teams would love to have.  And Wheeler would indeed be a good add for the ChiSox

How would you budget for your bullpen (if you were a GM)?  Would you spend more on the offseason or wait to see where you were each season, hoping the cost of adding bullpen help isn’t to high at the trade deadline?
Mark P
10:28
As I mentioned earlier, relief pitching is so hard to quantify since relievers can go from great to lousy seemingly overnight.  GMs have such a tough time in evaluating each pitcher, and trying to judge (or maybe even guess) who will continue to perform well and who will blow up.
10:29
I guess it depends on the individual player in question, but in general, I'd maybe wait until a couple of months into the season to really gauge my bullpen.  But I wouldn't do this if I went into a year with a clear vacuum in the pen (i.e. the 2019 Red Sox)

Yankees win the division or does Tampa catch them?  Rough couple weeks coming for NY and that pitching staff.....
Mark P
10:30
You know, as much as we keep assuming the Yankees' lack of pitching will eventually hurt them, it hasn't happened yet.  I wouldn't be shocked if they simply outslug everyone en route to a championship.

Will the Braves be in on Cole and/or Rendon this winter?
Mark P
10:31
If I had to guess, I'd say no, just because there's still uncertainty about how much payroll flexibility the Braves actually have.
Alex
10:33
Indians or Twins, who you got?
Mark P
10:33
I think Cleveland is the better team in a vacuum, but I think Minnesota will ultimately squeak out the division since they have an easier schedule the rest of the way.

Will the NL ever get a DH?
Mark P
10:34
Eventually, yes.  It'll happen.  Whether that's in the next CBA or maybe not for at least another decade, hard to say, but we'll eventually see a universal DH throughout the majors

Donaldson to Texas, where he could DH some?
Mark P
10:36
It depends on what you mean by "some," since the Rangers have a number of DH types already.

Will the Giants be looking to get rid of Belt in the offseason?
Mark P
10:37
Two Brandon Belt questions in one chat!  To quote my co-worker Steve Adams, what a time to be alive
10:38
I'm sure the Giants wouldn't mind unloading Belt's contract, but he has negative trade value in the wake of this rough season
Gavin Lux
10:39
What do I have to do in order to be called up, hit .500?
Mark P
10:40
Even with the caveat that Pacific Coast League numbers are inflated, Lux's numbers are flat-out bonkers in Triple-A.

But Andrew Friedman addressed this recently, noting that the Dodgers don't have a hugely pressing need at 2B (between Muncy, Hernandez, Taylor all being capable of everyday duty)
10:43
Sorry for the delay, had to update the Twitter

What would you look to address this offseason? I know this FO would never go for Cole but it seems like pitching (rotation and Pen) is the biggest need for this group moving forward. Maybe another veteran a la Galvis?
Mark P
10:44
The Jays will definitely look to add pitching, though you're correct that Cole is too pricey right now.  I can see them looking to add guys like Shoemaker and Buchholz as they did last winter, though perhaps a step up from that tier (and certainly with more success, the Jays hope).

Where do the orioles go with Chris Davis at seasons end? Have to let him go don’t they?
Mark P
10:48
They're still on the hook for that money regardless, so it all comes down to intangibles.  Maybe stuff like what Davis can bring as a clubhouse mentor to a young team, or if the O's have some faint hope he can somewhat turn it around (to become even a league-average hitter)
