The Phillies have had a lot of disappointments on their team this season, but Harper isn't one of them.
Ya Gotta Believe
9:43
Chances on the Mets resigning Wheeler?
Mark P
9:44
I'd say pretty slim, given all the money NY already has invested in their rotation.  Things could change if Syndergaard is dealt, but I think the Stroman trade might have more or less closed the door on a Wheeler return in 2020
Justin Verlander
9:45
Do I go into Cooperstown as a Tiger (2 no-hitters, a CY, and an MVP) or an Astro (1 no-hitter, a WS, and what may be another CY...and counting)?
Mark P
9:45
I have to believe he'd be a Tiger, given his much longer history in a Detroit uniform.  But hypothetically, say Verlander also has great seasons in both 2020 and 2021.  How would you vote?
9:46
With great seasons in 2020-21, Verlander goes into the HOF as a...

Astro (31.1% | 106 votes)

Tiger (68.9% | 235 votes)

The jays are going to need to make some decisions on a few of there outfielders next spring. Which ones most likely to be traded?
Mark P
9:49
Looks like Gurriel will be the everyday LF, and Grichuk's contract will make him a regular in RF (maybe getting some time in CF as well).

That leaves Hernandez, Fisher, McKinney, technically Drury, Alford, Jonathan Davis, and other fringe guys
9:50
Of that group, I'm not sure any have any real trade value apart from Hernandez.  I feel like the Jays could be ready to move on from Alford, maybe another team would have interest given his past prospect status

9:51
Are you excited or saddened by this being the last crazy Sept with gigantic 40 man active rosters?
Mark P
9:52
Excited.  The 40-man rosters made for longer games, which felt all the longer when two non-contending clubs were each making six pitching changes per game.  It's also very true that it's rather unfair for some teams to have way more guys on their bench than their opponents
Byron Buxton
9:54
Do you believe I'll ever play 130 games in a season?!?!?!
Mark P
9:54
Sure, it's still so early in his career.  It's a troubling number of injuries thus far, to be sure, but Buxton already looks like at least a solid big league player
Fan
9:55
Why is war so glorified, I feel that it can be miss leading, what do you think
Mark P
9:55
The fact that there isn't even a universal way of measuring WAR is evidence that isn't a foolproof stat.  Then again, no stat is rock-solid, and WAR is a pretty decent way of generally evaluating a player's overall contributions
9:56
In short, WAR, huh, what is it good for?  Absolutely something.

What do the Angels do with Brian Goodwin next year? Seems like an everyday player to me.
Mark P
9:57
Goodwin is only arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, so he isn't going anywhere.  The Angels have to be pleased with what they've gotten from him, and in the (likely?) event that Calhoun leaves, Goodwin can start until Jo Adell is ready.
Drew
9:58
Where will Rendon play next year?
Mark P
10:00
It'll be a hot market for him.  I'd guess even the contenders with established third basemen would explore position changes and trades in order to fit Rendon into the lineup
Mets
10:02
Any chance Mets get lindor in offseason? Rosario, Nimmo, Dom Smith and who else gets it done?
Mark P
10:02
Those three would at least get Cleveland's attention, but it would take even more to complete a deal.  The Tribe can afford to ask for the moon and stars for Lindor because he's just that good.
Mike Rizzo
10:03
How smart was picking up Parra?  We've really loosened up since then, and you can see the results.
Mark P
10:04
(Mike Rizzo = Nationals GM)

I have no reason to doubt that Parra is a great clubhouse guy.  But let's be real, the Nats are playing better since guys started to get healthy, their bullpen went from historically awful to merely bad, and Rendon and Soto are having MVP-type seasons
Coste Guard
10:05
You mentioned Phillies disappointments this year - the bullpen injuries were insane. Robertson, Neshek, Dominguez and Arano barely pitched. 9 relievers were on the IR this year. Who does Klentak go after this offseason?
Mark P
10:07
Pitching pitching and more pitching, both starters and relievers.  Phillies also need a center fielder and either a 2B or a 3B (depending on where they play Kingery and whether or not they move on from Hernandez)
The Beloved Harper
10:07
Lol. Worst contract in sports, but you guys love you some Harper!
Mark P
10:08
I merely pointed out that Harper was having a good season, and he was certainly not the reason the Phillies are having a disappointing year.  Whether it's the "worst contract in sports" remains to be seen, no question.  (It isn't even the worst contract in baseball today)
Nick
10:10
If the Brewers miss the playoffs, but the Nats make it, does Rendon finish ahead of Yelich in the MVP voting?
Mark P
10:10
Sure, I can see that happening.

Any possible scenario that Myers is traded to Baltimore with a prospect? Seems to make sense it
Mark P
10:12
Wil Myers?  He's owed $68.5MM through 2022, so for an Orioles team that still has Chris Davis on the books, the Padres would have to either eat a big chunk of that money or throw in more than one blue chip prospect
10:14
The idea isn't a bad one in a vacuum, however.  Minor leaguers are more valuable than ever in the sport, but San Diego is one of the few teams whose farm system is so deep that they could afford to move a couple of prospects to get a bad contract off the books.

I like Bryce Harper, but to say this season hasn’t been a disappointment is absurd. If you wanted .250 with 29 bombs you could’ve gotten Khris Davis
Mark P
10:16
The A's are probably wishing they had the real "Khris Davis" themselves, rather than the injured version who's having a down year.

Harper is having a good year.  Not a superstar season, but a thoroughly good offensive and defensive campaign.  In fact, almost all of the guys the Phillies brought in over the winter are playing really well (JT, Segura, Cutch before he got hurt) --- the problem is that so many of the players that were already on the roster aren't playing well
Yes
10:17
Gavin Lux getting called up. Will he be utterly amazing or huge disappointment?
Mark P
10:17
Based on the Dodgers' usual track record in producing prospects, I'd lean closer to amazing than disappointment.
Wishful Thinking
10:19
If the Angels sign Rendon and Cole, does that make them AL West favorites?
Mark P
10:19
Huge boosts, no doubt, but I'd still have the Astros ahead of them.  Maybe Oakland too, off the top of my head
Brent
10:20
Does Felix have to settle for a minor league deal next year, and if so where does he sign?  Or does he just retire?
