Can I bring Garret Cole to the land of 10,000 lakes?
Mark P
9:34
For 10,000 $20K bills, sure.

(Yes, I realize the US doesn't have a $20,000 bill.)
John
9:35
What are the Nationals chances of signing rendon?
Mark P
9:37
They would obviously love to keep him, and there's a long history of the Nationals and Scott Boras clients.  I'd give the Nats maybe a.....40.85562% chance

I’m wondering why all the mlb pundits think the Astros are that great.  Wade Miley recently became a train wreck.  Their bullpen is suspect.  Their hitting is unpredictable.  What do you think?
Mark P
9:38
Uh, they're 98-53.  Seems pretty great to me.
Charles Finley
9:39
Do the Yankees trade away JA Happ this winter, or just keep him and hope 2020 goes a little better?
Mark P
9:40
Probably keep him, since they'll need pitching anyway, and I'm not sure there will be a heated trade market for Happ after his tough year

Two quick questions Does Mookie remain with the Red Sox for the long term and who's the biggest free agent the Red Sox sign this winter?
Mark P
9:41
We probably won't really know the answer to either question until we see who Boston hires as the new GM/president of baseball ops.  But, Betts has been pretty steadfast in his desire to test free agency, and in those situations, the player more often than not plays for another team.

Grichuk extension - love it, hate it, or meh?  Does he still have second-half-2018 upside?
Mark P
9:44
I found the extension pretty surprising at the time, since it didn't seem like something the Jays really needed to do, and Grichuk didn't stand out as an obvious building block.

In the wake of Grichuk's 2019, the extension is looking like a misfire, though he still has a lot of time to get things together.

Pache for Mookie who says no?
Mark P
9:45
Red Sox would want a lot more than just one prospect
John
9:46
Will Rutchman definetly be called up by opening day 2021?
Mark P
9:47
My guess is no, since the Orioles aren't in any rush, and they'll want to have him as seasoned as necessary before an MLB debut
9:48
Rutschman debuting by May 2021 (in a nod to service time) wouldn't be a shocker

This assumes service time rules aren't altered in a new CBA, of course

Favourite baseball movie?
Mark P
9:48
A League Of Their Own, followed closely by the Sandlot
Nolen Arenado
9:49
Mark, if I waited to make it to the FA market, would I have been able to do better than the 8yr/$260 extension I got?
Mark P
9:51
That extension is technically a seven-year, $234MM extension, since his 2019 numbers were already agreed upon.

Without that extension, Arenado hits the open market this offseason as a free agent,  He turns 29 in mid-April 2020.  What does everyone think?
9:52
Does Arenado top seven years/$234MM as a free agent this winter?

Arenad-no (66.5% | 139 votes)

torres Yankees to brewers for hader who says no
Mark P
9:53
Yankees say no without much thought.  A valuable everyday player is worth more than an reliever

Do the cards even make the playoffs
Mark P
9:56
I still think so, sure
9:57
(assuming you mean the STL Cardinals and not the Arizona Cardinals, as exciting as Kyler Murray as looked)

Any thoughts on where Sir Didi ends up?  There are always fewer teams looking for veteran SS than people realize, but...maybe the Blue Jays?
Mark P
9:58
Jays don't seem like a fit, they're committed to using Bichette at shortstop
10:00
Other potential Didi suitors that spring to mind.....Brewers, Cubs, maybe Cleveland if Lindor is traded.  But you're right, it's a shorter list than one might imagine.

What's your take on the Giants not trading Bum? Did they really pass up a good return because of a winning streak? Or did they see the return as insufficient? Thanks Mark.
Mark P
10:03
I think the Giants felt they had a legitimate shot at a wild card, and decided to go for it.  Nothing wrong with that, and if anything, I tip my cap to them for prioritizing being competitive.

That being said, if they'd gotten a REALLY good offer for Bumgarner, he would've been traded.  But given how teams were so loath to give up young talent at the deadline, the Giants probably figured it wasn't worth moving MadBum just for the sake of moving him
Disagreeable
10:04
Hader is not just "an reliever". He's worth more than Torres and the Yankees, being bullpen savvy, know it. My opinion.
Mark P
10:05
Oh don't get me wrong, Hader is an excellent pitcher.  But Torres looks like he can be (at least) an above-average MLB regular for the next decade.  That carries a lot more value than even one of the game's very best relievers
Buxton
10:05
Any chance the Twins trade me this offseason for pitching? Cave has been more productive and his defense is solid enough, whereas I just keep running into walls like the Kool-Aid man.
Mark P
10:06
It seems way too early for the Twins to give up on Buxton, injuries notwithstanding.  Even if they were, they'd be selling low given all his health problems.
Brent
10:07
Wild idea- Betts gets to free agency after next season, and signs with Baltimore as the centerpiece of their future lineup based on the money available after Davis is off the books soon after that, and Mookie kills the ball in Camden Yards.
Mark P
10:09
You're not kidding that's a wild concept.  The O's aren't going to be good until 2022 at the earliest, probably 2023 in a more realistic light.  Now, your alternate-reality Orioles who do things like offer Betts enough money to convince him to join....they might have a speedier timeline.  But it's not happening.

Does Trout getting injured open the door for a different MVP?  Devers maybe?
Mark P
10:11
Devers isn't even the best player on his own team by fWAR --- both Betts and Bogaerts are ahead of him.

My suspicion is that Trout still wins MVP because there isn't a clear next candidate.  Semien and Chapman cancel each other out, the Red Sox guys ditto.....maybe Bregman, but he is also hurt somewhat by the fact that so many other Astros are going so well.
