If I had to guess, I think the Phillies will clean house and have a new manager/coaching staff in place for 2020
Angels fan

Would the Angels trade Adell for a legitimate front of the rotation ace? He’s never played a game and highly touted prospects frequently flame out
Mark P
9:56
I strongly doubt it.  The Angels spent too much time and effort on rebuilding their sorry farm system into a strength, and Adell is the crown jewel of that effort.

It's true that he could fail, as any unproven prospect could.  But the early returns are very promising, and he's on track to be a starting outfielder by midway through 2020

Does Austin Hays make the Orioles Opening Day roster in 2020?
Mark P
9:56
I don't see why not
No Really
9:57
Who you got in the World Series?
Mark P
9:58
My preseason pick of the Yankees and Rockies was, uh, not exactly accurate.

But Yankees/Dodgers is my pick right now.
It's a bit dull to pick two of the three superteams, and I certainly see a case of another club sneaking in there, to be fair

When do the Shapiro / Atkins duo end up in the hot seat?.
Mark P
10:01
They've set a soft target of 2021 for a return to contention.  If 2022 passes without any progress, some hard questions will and should be asked in Toronto
Oakland Athletics
10:02
Should we move to Las Vegas too if the whole DBacks deal doesn’t work out?
Mark P
10:02
If seems like ever so slowly, momentum is building towards a new ballpark for the A's in Oakland.  So they might end up staying put after all.

Now, the Las Vegas Rays, on the other hand....
Jason
10:03
How far do the Braves make it in the playoffs?
Mark P
10:03
Wouldn't be shocked if they won it all, or at least ended the Dodgers' reign in the NL
Michael
10:04
You think the Braves will try to trade for someone like Mike Clevenger or Starling Marte?
Mark P
10:05
Sure, they'll probably ask around, though I don't see why Cleveland would deal the Clev anytime soon.

Marte is perhaps a more realistic candidate to be moved, if the Pirates decide to blow things up.  But if Huntington and company are indeed staying, they might hang onto their assets and try to run things back with most of their roster again

Odubel is a goner, do you think a mish-mash of  Hasley, McCutchen, Bruce  and a sprinkling of Kingery cover LF/CF in 2020..?
Mark P
10:05
A Haseley/Kingery platoon in CF would be okay, and if Cutch is healthy, I assume he plays every day in left field.

10:06
Would MLB let a city like NYC or LA get a 3rd team rather than having a team relocate to a new area?
Mark P
10:07
I don't think the league would mind that at all, but the Yankees/Mets/Dodgers/Angels would all block such a move due to their territorial rights
Justin

you guys should review trades done by World Series winning teams the past 10 years, see how many went for it with big trades and paid off vs. those teams who didn't make big trades, it would be curious to see how many impact trades actually work.  Talking pre-deadline trades during in-season.
Mark P
10:10
Off the top of my head, the last several WS champs have made major deadline trades.  Royals got Cueto and Zobrist in 2015, Cubs got Chapman in 2016, Astros Verlander in 2017 (though that was before the August deadline), and the Red Sox got Pearce and Eovaldi last year.

You could make an even longer list, however, of teams who "went for it" with a big deadline trade that didn't work out.  That's the risk involved, and the fun for fans ---- you never know which deadline deal will end up being the most impactful.  Brewers fans, for instance, were grumbling about getting "only" Jordan Lyles this year, and look how that turned out

10:11
When do you see the White Sox getting into playoff contention again ?
Mark P
10:11
If absolutely everything breaks right and they make some nice offseason moves, 2020 isn't out of the question.

More realistically, 2021
Ian
10:13
How in the world will teams evaluate hitters and pitchers in this analytics era in the midst of the crazy ball?
Mark P
10:14
You're already seeing the move towards evaluating players based on process, rather than strict results.  If a guy has a lot of hard-hit balls, for instance, that might mean more to a club than an inflated home run total in a smaller ballpark

What about combining the rays with the marlins being called the florida marlins 41 games miami 41 games tampa bay and bring montreal back

Early Prediction: Who wins the AL East in 2020?
Mark P
10:15
Never too soon to prognosticate!  I'll pick the Yankees

Will Davy Martinez  go if mats don't advance again.
Mark P
10:16
Never say never with the Nationals and their stance towards managers, but I think Martinez will get a lot of credit for getting this team on track after that awful start.

10:18
Why do the Dodgers seem to always have amazing rookies yet no top draft picks, and how can San Diego get some of that sweet magic?
Mark P
10:18
The Dodgers' player development system is outstanding.  I think every team in baseball could love to their pipeline of prospects
10:19
I think it's time to wrap things up, thanks for all the questions!

Scheduling note for next week, the Sunday chat will take place during the morning, so set your alarms!
