Yasami Grandel

What are the chances that I decline my mutual option with the Brewers and the Twins make a run at me and let Castro and Cron hit the free market?
Mark P
8:39
Obviously Grandal will become a free agent, and there's a good chance the Twins led Cron walk.

But I don't see Minnesota as a major contender to sign Grandal, not after the year Garver had

8:40
When do the Royals hire a manager and who do you think is the favorite?
Mark P
8:41
Apparently a hire won't take place under the team's sale is finalized, so we might not know the team's new skipper until November or December
So it means the Royals will be kind of an odd outlier in the managerial market, since a lot of the top candidates will already be gone by the time they make their hire.  It could give them the pick of the litter of the leftover candidates, or it might not matter if they just hire an internal guy like Matheny
Welp
8:42
Adrian names two Mileys....is there a second Miley of which we’re unaware?
Mark P
8:42
I'm assuming that was just a typo.  The second Miley, as we all know, is better known as Hannah Montana
Mike E.
8:43
Should I move Mancini to get upper level arms?
Mark P
8:43
(This would be Orioles GM Mike Elias)
8:45
Mancini's trade value may never be higher, so I'm sure the O's will at least listen to offers, given that they should be open to anything at this point.

I wrote a Mancini piece way back in May (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/trade-candidate-trey-mancini.ht...) and noted that by the time the Orioles are legitimately good again, Mancini might already be declining.  Next year is his age-28 season, after all

Do you see a scenario where Wheeler accepts a QO? If so, do you think Mets would explore a trade?
Mark P
8:47
Wheeler sounded pretty eager to test free agency a few weeks ago, so I doubt he'd take a QO unless he and his agent heard rumblings through the grapevine that he'd be one of the guys (i.e. Keuchel, Kimbrel) whose market would take a big hit with a qualifying offer attached

"Sure, but why would the Rangers want either Longoria or Myers?"

They wouldn't. They would want the prospect(s) they would be getting back in the trade and would take Longoria/Myers in lieu of parting with any of their own trade chips.
Mark P
8:49
I see what you're saying, but the Rangers are planning to contend in 2020.  They're not in the "take on money just to add prospects" mode --- if anything, they'd probably prefer to still shed a bit more payroll.
Giants Dan
8:50
Do you think the Giants should decline to extend Bumgarner a QO as a showing of gratitude and to maybe make him more amenable to staying in SF?
Mark P
8:51
I highly doubt that would happen.

8:51
Looks like the Sox are going to look to move Mookie and JBJ. Martinez and Porcello will come off the books and there is no young talent in the system. Looking at a long rebuild in Boston?
Mark P
8:52
That's the catch of Boston's situation ---- they're not really willing to rebuild, since missing the postseason is seen as a fireable offense.

So a new GM will have to manage the payroll while still putting a contender on the field in 2020
8:53
Also, it's a misnomer to think Boston is in need of a rebuild at all.  There's still a ton of talent on the roster.  If Martinez opted out and JBJ was traded, the Sox would no longer see a reason to trade Betts, for instance
Braves fan
8:55
The Braves need to dump Markakis, Teheran, Flowers and trade Ender and take the 13 mil that went to Keuchel and go after Gerrit Cole.
Mark P
8:57
Big long-term free agent signings have never really been Anthopoulos' preferred method.  Donaldson and Keuchel were one-year deals, and Russell Martin in Toronto was perhaps a unique situation due to Martin's Canadian roots.

So splurging on a big $200MM+ deal to sign Cole would be an uncharacteristic move, especially for a Braves organization that doesn't appear to be willing to go beyond being a mid-tier payroll team
Andrew Friedman
8:58
Will I be in Boston or LA next year and wull
Mark P
8:59
Friedman is the Dodgers' president of baseball operations, fyi

The general feeling is still a new deal with L.A., but I wouldn't be totally shocked if Friedman at least took a meeting with Boston as a matter of due diligence.  I'd still be surprised to see him be anything other than a Dodger, however

Chances Red Sox trade Mookie if he turns down another contract offer? What could they get in return?
Mark P
9:01
Hey, some dude on the MLBTR staff wrote about this just last week!

Joshua
9:02
If the Nats dangled IF Luis Garcia as trade bait, what reliever do you think they could realistically bring back in return? Thanks.
Mark P
9:03
Offering Garcia would be enough to land any number of fine relievers, but I kinda doubt Washington is willing to a deal a top-100 type of position player prospect for a relief pitcher.  Especially when they might eventually need Garcia for the future if Rendon leaves.
True Dodger Blue
9:03
In the slight chance Andrew Friedman decides not to return to LA, do the Dodgers pivot to Dave Dombrowski?
Mark P
9:04
One of the Dodgers' big goals in hiring Friedman was getting back under the luxury tax threshold and focusing on developing young talent and internal prospects, rather than signing big free agents.

Bringing Dombrowski in would seem to run counter to that strategy, given Dombrowski's M.O. of trading prospects for proven veterans.
Curious
9:05
Which team gets the most questions?
Mark P
9:06
Good question!  It's actually a pretty wide range of teams --- mostly contenders, or bigger-market teams, or clubs that seem to have obvious trade candidates or have a clear roster weakness that could be filled by a particular free agent
Mark
9:07
How would you grade Atkins body of work with the Jays so far?
Mark P
9:08
B or a B-minus seems fair.  He does have a postseason appearance to his record, and the Jays have gathered a very nice collection of young talent since he became the GM.
David
9:09
Lots of talk of Kris Bryant getting dealt...... Who are some teams you could see interested?
Mark P
9:10
Lots of teams, obviously.  But I'm doubtful Chicago would trade Bryant, since even with the big arbitration raises he'll get in the next two years, that's still a more-than-reasonable price for a player of his ability.
Harry Potter
9:10
Your Halloween costume this year?
Mark P
9:11
I'm likely going as "guy who's got a shift on MLB Trade Rumors" this year
Cherington
9:11
How come I havent gotten a GM job again yet?
Mark P
9:12
This would be former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington, who is currently working in the Blue Jays' front office.  Cherington was a target for a couple of teams last season, but he reportedly wasn't interested in taking on another GM job at that time.
9:13
No idea if his stance has changed, or if he'll eventually ever want to take the reigns of another front office.  I suspect he'll get a lot of interest if he did make himself available.
