Grandal 3 at 60 million.  Chances?
Mark P
9:13
Someone will give him a four-year offer.  He's by far the best catcher on the board, lots of teams need help behind the plate, and he doesn't have a qualifying offer hanging over him this winter
Carl
9:14
Do the Phillies go after the big splash in Cole or Strasburg, or does it make more sense to go after 2 mid rotation pieces and Rendon?
Mark P
9:15
Lots of ways the Phillies could possibly go, and the fact that they're willing to spend and be aggressive gives them lots of options and backup options.  Don't forget, the Phils were reportedly in on virtually every major free agent and trade candidate available last offseason, so they'll leave no stone unturned
Ross Atkins
9:16
I've stated that we need a dependable starter. Do I finally make somewhat of a splash and grab a Wheeler? If not, who fits the bill?
Mark P
9:17
(Jays GM Ross Atkins)

I can see the case for the Blue Jays going for a slightly bigger-name pitcher, but I don't see them giving up a draft pick for a qualifying-offer guy like Wheeler
Dodger hater
9:18
While the Giants are supposedly in rebuild mode, it's kind of hard to do that with the likes of Belt, Crawford, Longo, etc. locked up in multi-year contracts. Any chance Farhan can shed any of those contracts this off-season as he somehow managed to do with Melancon?
Mark P
9:19
It's pretty unlikely, unless it's some type of bad contract swap.  The Braves were willing to eat one year and a couple of months' of salary for Melancon (which was surprising unto itself), but I find it hard to see takers for two full years of Belt, two full years of Crawford, and three full years of Longoria

9:20
Who do you feel like some top suitors for Strasburg are outside of Washington or the California based teams? Can you see the Bluejays getting in on any big name starters? Thanks! Love the chats!
Mark P
9:21
Any pitching-needy team with payroll space should be going after Strasburg ---- Twins, Phillies, White Sox, Yankees, maybe the Rangers

9:21
How long are Elias and Hyde with the Orioles? Is it just until they are done rebuilding?
Mark P
9:23
Surely Elias would get a chance to make moves once he's actually put together a contending core.  As for Hyde, I'd suspect he'd get a chance to remain as manager, though it wouldn't be the first time a team has made a change in the dugout once they decide they're "ready to win"

9:24
Giants to go discount route again this Winter while they wait for contracts to expire, rookies to ripen?
Mark P
9:25
Probably, unless there's one particular star free agent (i.e. Harper last year) that really captures the fancy of ownership and the front office
Yoko Bono
9:25
Why is everyone so certain the Indianan will trade lindor? Aren’t they trying to contend next year?
Mark P
9:26
This is true, though if they get a good enough offer that involves players that can still help them in 2020, I suspect Lindor would be moved
Mile Rizzo
9:27
Who do I need more: Stras or Tony?
Mark P
9:28
Rendon seems more valuable, since while the Nats have Kieboom on the farm, expecting him to come anywhere close to Rendon would be foolhardy.

Whereas even without Strasburg, the Nats' rotation still has Scherzer, Corbin, Sanchez as a nice top three
Ry Guy
9:29
Would the Rockies trade Jon Gray? Jays a good fit?
Mark P
9:29
In theory yes, but the Rockies are always so desperate for starting pitching that dealing a solid guy like Gray should only be a Plan C or Plan D
BillyEppler
9:29
Can Washington hit Strasburg with a QA if they cannot come to terms on an extension?
Mark P
9:30
Yes, Strasburg would be eligible for a qualifying offer
I believe in Bloom
9:30
Eovaldi and Bradley for Odor and Gallo or Mazara. Who says no?
Mark P
9:31
There is zero chance the Rangers trade Gallo.  But I think Texas would be interested in a JBJ/Eovaldi for Odor/Mazara swap
Jon
9:32
What are the chances of Zaidi being able to find a take for Belt so that they can move Posey to 1B/secondary Catcher and Bart as main Catcher by the end of 2020?
Mark P
9:33
They could move Belt if it's a pure salary dump or a bad-contract swap.  Belt isn't a bad player but that extension struck me as odd even when it was signed, given that it was obvious Posey would eventually require more first base time
Harambe
9:33
Why is the media pushing the hometown narrative so hard with Cole and Strasbourg?
Mark P
9:34
It makes for an easy story, plus if they did end up in SoCal, teams that miss out on signing them could tell their fans "hey, we tried, but they just wanted to play at home."

The hometown narrative also ignores the fact that a lot of players actually prefer to NOT play close to home, to avoid extra pressure and expectations.
Ry Guy
9:35
Edwin back to the Jays?
Mark P
9:36
I like the idea.  He won't come at too big a price, and the Toronto fans would love to have the Parrot back
Jon
9:37
Do you think they will trade Caratini, in the case they don't trade Conteras?
Mark P
9:37
Why not just keep both, to keep the catching position as deep as possible?
kf
9:37
Can Cardinals move Carpenter? What are their options with him?
Mark P
9:38
He's another player I don't see being dealt unless the Cards either eat a lot of money or take on a bad contract.  If you're another team, why would you want Carpenter in the wake of such a rough season?  (His past success notwithstanding)
Dodgers
9:39
Do you think the Dodgers try to move Pederson with all the outfielders they have?  If so, what would they be looking for in return?
Mark P
9:40
Joc's inability to hit LHP makes him a bit of a limited player, so I can see the Dodgers seeing him as somewhat expendable, especially since his arbitration number is pretty high.
Sam
9:40
Think there's a chance the Braves trade for someone like Haniger?
Mark P
9:42
Absolutely.  I suspect a lot of teams will be asking the Mariners about Haniger to see if they can buy low on him.  if I'm Seattle, however, I hang onto Haniger to see if he bounces back and hits well, and only (maybe) explore trades come the July 31 deadline
Lou4hof184
9:42
Is Strasburg  really in play elsewhere? Or is the opt out a ploy
Mark P
9:44
I wouldn't be shocked if Strasburg and the Nats came to a new agreement that adds a couple of extra years onto his current deal, with maybe something in the ballpark of $60MM in new money.  Strasburg likes playing in Washington, obviously likes playing for a winner and (like I mentioned earlier) he might be one of those guys that might not want the extra attention and pressure of playing close to home
