Do you see the Reds giving Grandal a large enough contract to lure him in?
Mark P
9:46
Reds certainly plan to be aggressive, though if they make the big splash in signing Grandal, it remains to be seen if they'd have enough remaining funds to address other needs
As in, maybe the Reds will spend their money (or trade capital) on multiple areas rather than just one big splash

Is bringing in Joe Maddon as manager a sign that the Angels are preparing to make some big splashes this offseason? Got to get Mike Trout to the playoffs, right?
Mark P
9:47
Absolutely.  I expect the Angels to be one of the busier teams of the offseason
Antman
9:47
Marvel or DC?
Mark P
9:48
Spider-Man was a childhood hero, so I'll always be a Marvel guy

Your thoughts on the Beltran hire by the Mets? Do you think it increases/decreases their urgency to win?
Mark P
9:49
It's a fascinating hire, and it goes against so much of the conventional thinking (i.e. that the Mets would hire a veteran manager) when Callaway was fired.

Beltran is widely regarded as a great personality and a clubhouse leader, though it remains to be seen if that translates to managing since he's never done it before
Pad Squad
9:50
Likelihood a Padres try to trade for S. Marte?  He would seem to fit their need of L hitting OF.
Mark P
9:50
Marte should definitely be on the Padres' radar, that makes a lot of sense
Cito's Mustache

Do you think the Dodgers would sit out on free agent pitching entirely and count on May, Urias, Stripling and Gonsolin? I feel like they're going to want more of sure-things after their top 2.
Mark P
9:51
My guess is that one of Ryu or Hill be back in LA next year, just because the Dodgers will want a bit more veteran backing to go with the younger guys
Hmm..
9:52
What kind of contract does Donaldson get and who are three clubs besides atl that would be in on him?
Mark P
9:54
Three-year deal seems deserved, despite Donaldson's age.

Off the top of my head, the Rangers, Phillies and (if Rendon leaves) Nationals all have needs at third base.

How about another poll:  Strasburg stays in DC vs Strasburg signs somewhere else?
Mark P
9:55
Done and done!
Will Stras be back with the Nats next year?

Yes (58% | 328 votes)

No (42% | 238 votes)

Do the Braves and Indians revisit the Kluber talks from last year?
Mark P
9:56
Sure, though those talks will become a lot trickier in the wake of Kluber's lost season.  The Indians might prefer to just take the first half to see if a healthy Kluber can rebuild his trade value, before exploring deals
Yooo
9:57
Ranking the Sheffield & Paxton trade? Thank you
Mark P
9:57
Paxton pitched pretty well last year, I don't think the Yankees are regretting that trade
Alex A. GM
9:57
Better play for me - resign Donaldson for 3 years or trade the farm for 1 year of Betts with the current set up?
Mark P
9:57
Three years of Donaldson only costs money, whereas one year of Betts costs a heavy price in prospects, and you have no guaranteed that he'll re-sign.
Neander
9:59
Are my best options for building off the 2019 campaign to basically stand pat and allow internal candidates (I.e. wander Franco) time to further develop?
Mark P
10:00
(Erik Neander = Rays GM)

I don't think the Rays will ever truly stand pat, as while their roster is already very good, there are still some areas of need.
For more on the Rays, a very smart and handsome MLBTR writer just wrote their Offseason Outlook piece the other day!

When are the Marlins good again? With Jeter as our GM, will it take awhile for us to rebuild?
Mark P
10:02
Technically, Jeter isn't the GM, Michael Hill is the president of baseball operations.  But regardless, it seems like Miami has at least a couple more years of rebuilding ahead of them

10:02
Who says no......Bryant and Happ for Austin Riley, Kyle Wright and Trey Harris?
Mark P
10:03
Cubs would want more for Bryant

10:03
last offseason there was talk about jays being interested bringing in keuchel. chances of this happening now especially without the qo and payroll flexibility?
Mark P
10:05
It's possible, though if you're Keuchel, wouldn't you prefer to sign with a contender?  Unless his market totally dries up again, which seems less likely since he won't have the QO
Trixie
10:06
Will the Tigers do any exciting during the offseason?  Or is it more dumpster diving?
Mark P
10:06
I don't see Detroit doing much in the way of big moves
Jason
10:07
What moves do you feel the white Sox would have to make to be a potential playoff team next year?
Mark P
10:07
One ace-level starter, one more solid rotation guy, one big bat for 1B/DH, and another big bat for the outfield
Twins, not twinkies.
10:08
How big of a splash do you genuinely foresee Minnesota making as far as starting rotation?
Mark P
10:09
Minnesota has such a glaring need for starting pitching that they have to do SOMETHING notable, though I can see them spreading their money on multiple second-tier types (Bumgarner, Keuchel, Odorizzi) rather than one huge signing in Cole

Where do you think I’m playing on opening day?
