MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

Mark P
Anyway, with a full and normal offseason, Posey could certainly improve next year, though his MVP days are almost certainly behind him

Why don’t teams give out more Qualifying Offers so they can get more draft picks?
Mark P
9:25
Don't forget, the qualifying offer is worth $17.8MM for one season.  Teams aren't going to spend that kind of money on just anyone, which is why the QOs are only saved for the more upper-tier type of free agents.
AA vs MLBPA
9:25
Will this turn into another Braves issue or league wide issue?
Mark P
9:26
Honestly, it seemed like that situation was much ado about nothing: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/mlbpa-investigation-braves-gm-a...
Sandy Alomar
9:27
Could I be a good fit to manage the Pirates?
Mark P
9:27
Sure?  Sandy Alomar was a hot managerial candidate for years, though never got a shot
Rendon
9:28
At this point, where could I land outside of DC?
Mark P
9:29
Rangers, Braves, Phillies, Brewers all have big vacancies at third base.  You can definitely make a case that the Dodgers or Yankees (among other teams) could/should make a run at Rendon since he's just that good a player

Dan ODowd said I made a great decision saying I would sign 1 year deal. Is a  homecoming more likely with Phillies or Rangers?
Mark P
9:31
Hamels back in Philly would make a lot of sense, though the Rangers are also a good fit.
Phillies are closer to contention of the two, I guess

9:32
Is the leash short or long for Rowdy Tellez? Is there a versatile veteran free agent the Jays should be considering at 1st?
Mark P
9:34
Jays will certainly be looking at the 1B market, perhaps a Smoak reunion, maybe a player with more multi-position ability, as you said.

The Jays don't see Tellez remotely in the same category as their other young blue chippers, though since 2020 is also a rebuild year, why not give him a longer look to see if he emerges?  Nothing to lose, really

9:34
How much financial benefit do playoff teams get from the home games in in their ballparks?
Mark P
9:35
I think I read somewhere once that every home playoff game equals roughly an extra $1MM in revenue.  That was years ago, however, so not sure if TV deals or other factors have since changed that figure
Peter Gammon 2.0
9:36
Andrew Vaughn for Kyle Tucker who says no?
Mark P
9:36
Astros, since Tucker has more defensive value
Braves Fan
9:38
Could Atlanta entice Cleveland for a Lindor trade given its minor league depth?
Mark P
9:39
Sure, I could see the Braves making a nice offer.  Swanson, one of Waters or Pache, and an interesting young arm or two would definitely get the Tribe's attention
Dan'l
9:39
If you were Cards GM, would you resign Waino?
Mark P
9:40
2019 was a nice rebound year for Wainwright.  He won't cost much, he's a team leader, he still has something left in the tank....definitely makes sense for a new contract

So who runs the red Sox baseball operations of players, trades. They seem to have a lot of staff is this typical in teams. Will bloom be given full control if he wants to move a player like Betts?
Mark P
9:42
My assumption is that Bloom has the final say on all personnel moves, though obviously he'd need ownership approval in making any huge signings (and quite possibly for something as big as a Betts trade).  My suspicion is that Bloom wouldn't have taken the job if he wasn't going to be allowed to fully run the front office
MO
9:43
What do I do with Carlos Martinez?
Mark P
9:45
(STL baseball ops boss John Mozeliak, btw)

I'd be tempted to just leave him as the closer, since CarMar performed quite well in the role last year.  Obviously he'd have more value in the rotation, though if he can't stay healthy as a starter, maybe it's best to just keep him healthy in a key relief position
Lee Majors
9:45
Who would you vote into Cooperstown from the Modern Baseball ballot?
Mark P
9:45
Here are the ten names on the ballot, for reference's sake: https://baseballhall.org/modern-baseball-era-ballot-2020
9:47
Whitaker, Simmons, and Miller are no-brainers, though in Miller's case, he did state that he didn't want to be inducted after his death, so I'm not sure how I'd factor that in if I was the one making a vote.

Of the nominees, I'd also take a hard look at Evans and Tommy John, leaning towards a yes for both
Rays fan
9:47
Chances Rays make a big trade to improve the team?
Mark P
9:48
I guess it depends on your definition of "big," but I absolutely expect Tampa Bay to have its usual active winter on the trade front
Bronx Zoo
9:48
What is next value play by Cash—eg Voit, Tauchman, DJ, even Didi and Hicks?
Mark P
9:49
At this point, who knows.  Given the Yankees' track record at getting big results from unheralded guys, I feel like they could sign me and I'd suddenly hit .250/.330/.450 with 15 homers for them.
9:50
In all seriousness, their internal development is also a factor in their offseason dealings.  If the Yankees are confident that they can turn almost anyone into a decently productive player, they might be less inclined to make a truly big splash
Angels
9:51
When Pujols goes into the HOF, any chance he does so as an angel?
Mark P
9:51
Almost surely no
Angels
9:51
If Angel's miss on Cole/Stras, could they splurge on 3 or 4 of the next top pitchers?
Mark P
9:52
Three or four is a bit much.  Two seems quite reasonable --- Bumgarner and Odorizzi, or something
HUVIE33
9:53
Should GM's consider the ball is going to be dead again next year so power numbers will drop and adjust offers to match what they consider the players normal to be. Someone like Gardner isn't going to hit 28hr's next year.
