Two years might be the max for another Cole Hamels contract, and I'm sure the Cubs would be open to a one-year arrangement.

Given the short-term nature, I suspect lots of teams will be interested in adding Hamels.  He has stated he wants to win, so my guess is that he'll only sign with a clear contender

Would the Reds have to pay a premium for Marte for a interdivision swap?
Mark P
9:30
Potentially.  Some teams are more stringent than others about the idea of trading to a division rival, and there isn't exactly a lot of good feeling between the Reds and Pirates right now

The Rangers have said they will be in on top free agents. MLB doesn’t seem to agree. Why doesn’t anyone think the Rangers are serious about signing big names?
Mark P
9:32
This is purely my speculation, but I wonder if top free agents will want to see how the new ballpark plays before committing years of their careers to the Rangers
Say, a big free agent pitcher signs with Texas this winter and then whoops, discovers the new stadium is a hitters' paradise
Billy Eppler
9:33
Any chance of the angels trading for Orange County raised Shane Bieber? Maybe for Adell?
Mark P
9:33
Eppler = Angels GM

If I'm Cleveland, Bieber is just about the last player I'd trade, even for a star prospect like Adell.  Bieber is cost-controlled for years and already looking like a front-of-the-rotation guy

How do Red Sox end up shedding salary? I think Mookie stays. Who goes?
Mark P
9:34
In a world where the Red Sox keep Betts AND cut some payroll down to a more manageable size, I think Bradley absolutely has to go, and one of the expensive pitchers (Price, Sale, Eovaldi) have to go

The White Sox largest contract ever is $68m. Will they beat that this offseason and what are the chances they beat it twice?
Mark P
9:36
If the Sox are as serious as they claim about being on the cusp of contention, I see no reason why they shouldn't be in on any top free agent, and willing to blow past $68MM

Should I really believe the buzz that the Reds will make some big moves this winter?
Mark P
9:37
If you're Dick Williams, you don't make the kind of "postseason of bust" statements that you do without having firm plans to spend

Who will be the 2020 version of Acuna / Vlad Jr in terms of service time manipulation?

What is your thoughts on how frequently star players play? I think a few rest days (like once or twice a month) for healthy players is perfectly reasonable, but many seem to abhor it. What are your thoughts?
Mark P
9:40
Should be a case-by-case basis depending on the player, depending on factors like past injury history, schedule, playing on turf, pitching matchups, etc.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the players who publicly balk at rest days are just trying to look tough, while privately welcoming a day off

Why did the Padres hire Jayce Tingler with no experience when they could have hired Ron Washington with a lot of experience?  The owner said before the hire they wanted somebody with experience.
Mark P
9:42
AJ Preller believes in Jayce Tingler, to the point that Tingler was the pick even in what's probably a make-or-break year for Preller in San Diego.

Over/under 1.5 trades involving 40 man/rule 5 types this week before the deadline?
Mark P
9:43
Over is a lock

9:44
Were you surprised by Odorizzi accepting QO?
Mark P
9:45
I had Odorizzi going to the Twins in the free agent picking contest, in part because i thought the QO was a distinct possibility for him.  Odorizzi's track record isn't so strong that teams wouldn't have been able to pick it apart and find reasons to not sign him (or at least not give up a pick to sign him).
Theo Epstein
9:46
Do I look at Brock Holt?
Mark P
9:47
Absolutely.  Holt checks a lot of boxes on a lot of teams, he'll get plenty of looks from around the league

9:48
Assuming he is non-tendered, do you see any MLB team being able to do anything with Blake Treinen
Mark P
9:48
Sure, I don't think Treinen is a lost cause at all.  At this time last year, don't forget, Treinen was looking like one of the best relievers in baseball.
To this end, I think the A's will be able to find a trade partner for him, rather than non-tender him entirely

With all the discussions about where Rendon and Strasburg night sign, how some Washington isn’t viewed as a favorite to at least sign one?  Do you think both free agents will sign with new teams?
Mark P
9:49
Who says the Nats aren't favorites?  In fact, I'd be pretty surprised if BOTH Rendon and Strasburg leave

9:50
What do you think the punishment for the Astros is going to and should be? Will the 2017 title be vacated or are we talking heavy bans, suspensions, fines, loss of picks and international money?
Mark P
9:51
MLB won't take away the 2017 title, that's absolutely not happening.  But suspensions, fines, draft picks, international money....that would all seem to be on the table.

The White Sox wouldn’t trade Madrigal or Vaughn for 1 year of Markus Betts right?
Mark P
9:52
Nope.
Nate
9:52
How do the GM meetings differ in conversation than the winter meetings?
Mark P
9:53
The GM meetings are generally just for (you guessed it) GMs and other front office personnel, plus player agents.  The winter meetings are a free-for-all of front offices, agents, coaches, the occasional player, random people trying to get jobs in baseball, you name it

Should I get Kevin Pillar when he’s Non Tendered or trade for Jackie Bradley
