MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

It's possible.  It's safe to write off Ellsbury as total sunk cost, and I'd be surprised at this point to ever see him play again.
10:27
Nary a chat goes by without a fan proposing some bad contract swap to get Ellsbury off the Yankees' books, I should add.

10:27
Who is Justin Smoak signing with? Or is he retiring?
Mark P
10:28
I suspect he'll sign with someone, though that can't be a certainty given how ice-cold the first base market has been the last two seasons.  Smoak does have an advantage in that his advanced metrics and Statcast numbers were excellent, however

Do Puig or Wacha make sense as targets for the White Sox?
Mark P
10:29
Sure
ROY
10:29
Luis Robert putting in a Acuna type season in 2020?
Mark P
10:29
No, just because breakouts like Acuna are so rare.  This doesn't mean that Robert won't have a fine season and be a ROY contender, however --- it's just that Acuna's ceiling was so high

Giants were 54-51 from June 1st on. They have 60m+ to spend in free agency. Is this team better than most give them credit for?
Mark P
10:32
I think so, though I'm not sure they're ready at this point for a big spend.  That might not come until Zaidi is more fully certain of his core, or that the Longoria/Belt/Posey generation aren't all about to decline entirely
Foody
10:34
Does the Yankees farm system still have enough pieces to make a significant and impactful move ?
Mark P
10:35
Absolutely.  It's just a question of how much the Yankees want to move from that system, since they're putting such a premium on young talent
Cod 2.0
10:36
Miguel Andújar, Clint Frazier, and another prospect for Kyle Schwarber?
Mark P
10:37
Now, if it was Andujar AND Frazier, yeah, that's an offer I think the Cubs give strong consideration to accepting.  The risk is you're taking on two guys with defensive issues in a non-DH league, but since the Cubs are the same team who used Schwarber in LF anyway, maybe it's not a huge issue

If Matt Carpenter finds his old form, Do you foresee Tommy Edmon taking over CF duties?
Mark P
10:38
Edman hasn't played much CF in his pro career, but he's versatile enough that I could see the Cards use him there at least as part of a platoon or something.  It can't be underscored how big a Carpenter revival would be for the Cardinals, by the way
Jeff T
10:40
Do you see Boston going after any high-priced starting pitchers or going for a premium bullpen arm
Mark P
10:40
Nope, not without clearing some payroll first.  They already have so much invested in their rotation that spending big on another starter seems unlikely.

10:41
Since the Marlins have to spend at this point, why not overpay Castellanos to a point of 14-17 for two years? Guy's from the area, park's not quite as big as Detroit's, and only be two years until he gets back to free agency.
Mark P
10:41
As many have pointed out, Castellanos was so openly distraught by playing for a losing team in Detroit that I doubt he'd sign with another non-contender for anything less than a vast overpay
Mark J
10:42
The Sox and Twins both need starting pitchers. Who wins?  The Twins won last year getting Nelson Cruz
Mark P
10:43
If I'm a free agent pitcher considering my options, I'm more apt to go with the team that won 101 games last season.
Free Agent
10:44
Why wouldn't MLB take away the 2017 title from Houston? If there's evidence they cheated to win it, they don't deserve it
Mark P
10:45
There have been so many cases of cheating in baseball history that it would open up a real can of worms if you started vacated championships.  I'm not sure what the circumstances would be for the league to actually "remove" a World Series from a team, not that that symbolic gesture would be worth much
Cole Hamels
10:46
Where do I land by your estimation?
Mark P
10:46
My Hamels pick in the free agent contest was a return to Philly
Confused Fan
10:47
Even with Cole, LAA is nowhere near contending. Can you please explain their logic ?
Mark P
10:47
I'm pretty sure the Angels wouldn't halt all other winter plans after signing Cole.  They know they're more than one player (and one pitcher, specifically) away
Nick Krall
10:48
Thoughts on signing Will Harris, Didi, Yasmani, & Castellanos??
Mark P
10:49
(Nick Krall is the Reds' GM, and a man who is undoubtedly confused with Nick Kroll on a daily basis.)

Any of those signings make sense for the Reds, though for Castellanos, an NL team without a DH spot could wary.  Signing all four in one offseason seems perhaps a bit of a stretch

10:50
Hey Mark, Do you think the Mets have any chance to move Cano to an AL team?
Mark P
10:50
Probably not.  I wouldn't have thought Cano was going to be dealt last winter, and that was coming off a string of good seasons.  His trade value has to be next to nil coming off a rough year and with a still-huge contract

10:52
Maddon seems like a large figure now in the Halo organization, definitely casting a large shadow over Billy Eppler.  It could not have been Eppler’s idea to bring in LaRussa as an advisor. I like Billy Epps but seems like his days are numbered. Thoughts?
Mark P
10:52
If the Angels aren't in contention in 2020, I think Eppler will indeed be fired

Sweet Lou gets the Hall Call after the 2% Traveshamockery, Right?
Mark P
10:54
I really hope Lou Whitaker gets into the HOF.  He is long overdue.

10:54
What would I have to offer to get giles & McGuire from the jays?
Mark P
10:55
A couple of good young pitchers would definitely get Toronto's attention.  Not any of the Braves' top-100 level guys, but Atlanta has a deep system

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles by a wide wide margin
