Mark P

I think I had him going to Philly in the free agent picks contest, but a lot of teams make sense
Dustin
9:59
I would love to see the Padres sign Madbum
Mark P
9:59
They'd make sense, though it seems like SD is focusing more on trades than free agent signings.
Dan B

Any chance Detroit engages in anything significant whatsoever this week?
Mark P
10:00
Well, there's the Rule 5 draft.  Does that count as significant?
Beyond that, I see a pretty quiet offseason for the Tigers
Crystal ball
10:00
Say the dodgers offer 5/200 to Cole since they like the shorter deals ... comparable / competitive with what the Yankees offered?
Mark P
10:01
Doubtful, since why would Cole take less years and less money?
Joe
10:01
With the Mets making an ownership change, will there be any implications for this off-season toward more spending or will that be something that comes in future years?
Mark P
10:02
Hard to say, it's possible the Wilpons decide to go all-out to try and win a Series before Cohen takes over (which might not yet be for a few years), or they could approach it as business as usual.  I think I know which scenario Mets fans would prefer
Ryan K
10:03
Are the Blue Jays coming away with Ryu or Keuchel?
Mark P
10:03
I feel like Toronto would have to overpay big-time for either, so my guess is no
10:04
I guess there's a chance they could land Ryu if they went overboard with years (at least four, maybe five) rather than money, owing to his injury history and age.  But that's also a risky move the Jays might not feel they have to make quite yet
Stubby
10:05
Arcia and what else for Trey Mancini?
Mark P
10:05
Arcia is nothing more than a throw-in for any offer the Brewers might make for Mancini
Epstoyer
10:06
Can you make the Bryant trade and base it on ONE year, but include a PTBNL- one group for if its one year and a much better group if its going to be two years?
Mark P
10:06
It's possible, but I think teams might be content to just wait out the hearing.  I wish I knew more about when a decision might be rendered, of course
Brian
10:06
Is Rendon really the Phillies number one priority?
Mark P
10:07
Sure, why wouldn't he be?  As much as the Phils need pitching, their offense was no great shakes last year, and Rendon is the best possible boost in that department.
10:08
I don't know if adding Rendon and Wheeler alone would suddenly put the Phils in the playoffs, but it's a heck of a start
Mozeliak
10:08
Any idea who my main target might be on the pitching side of things?
Mark P
10:09
(STL president of baseball ops John Mozeliak)

Technically, it doesn't HAVE to be anyone, with Flaherty, Mikolas, Hudson, Wainwright, and either a healthy Carlos Martinez or a range of other No. 5 starter candidates.  But if the Cards wanted to get creative, they could sign a third-tier veteran for that fifth spot, or maybe deal Hudson as part of a trade for a higher-tier arm
Plan B
10:11
If the Angels don’t sign Cole have they committed enough resources to sign other pitching so they don’t fall flat on their face?
Mark P
10:11
If they don't sign Cole, they'll have plenty of money left to go after another one of the big arms
Bloom
10:12
What big moves should I shock you guys with?
Mark P
10:13
(new Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom)

Trading Betts anytime soon would be a real shock to me
Tigers
10:14
Who do you see the Tigers taking with the #1 pick in the rule 5 draft.
Mark P
10:15
Jose Rojas, Andre Scrubb, Joe Barlow are a few of the names who have popped up in a few of the Rule 5 preview pieces.  Hard to really predict a Rule 5, however, since so many teams don't even bother making picks (even rebuilding teams)
Trader Joe
10:16
Cubs seem to be trimming salaries, is Kyle Hendricks available? At what cost?
Mark P
10:17
I think he'd be one of the last stars the Cubs trade.  His contract isn't onerous, and Chicago needs pitching
Ross Shapiro
10:17
Do you think that if the Jays get a couple of rotation pieces, that this young team could be playing meaningful baseball in September?
Mark P
10:18
An awful lot would have to go right for the Jays to be contenders.  Like, the young guys all break out immediately, they get surprise contributions from multiple young pitchers, at least one of NYY/Boston/Tampa falls apart.....etc.
Alex
10:19
Will my prayers be answered that the Astros resign Will Harris?
Mark P
10:19
I picked Harris to Houston in the FA contest, so I hope you're right!  Though if you're an Astros fan, uh, you might have bigger worries than Will Harris' future...
Glen
10:19
Is Ryu a fit and even a realistic target for Padres? Fits as top of rotation piece and cheaper than Stras. Still requires going beyond expected payroll limit but they need another starter.
Mark P
10:21
I feel like a broken record here, but Ryu/Padres was ANOTHER of my free agent contest picks.  My logic was that Ryu stays on the west coast, in SoCal, and for a team that has been known to make a free agent splash or two.  If the Padres can't find a way to trade for a quality starter, they might instead try to unload Myers with a prospect or two, and THEN sign someone like Ryu
Sox in Bloom
10:22
Is CWS prospect Louis Robert off the table in a potential deal with Red Sox for Mookie Betts or even if they need another starter such as Price?
Mark P
10:22
I'd imagine Robert is as close to untouchable as a prospect could be
shark
10:22
do you really think teams are factoring in the possibility of there being a DH in the NL in a couple of years when approaching free agent signings this offseason?
Mark P
10:23
Unless there's a lot of behind-the-scenes movement towards the DH in the NL, I'd imagine teams wouldn't take such a big risk like that.  If the NL/DH doesn't happen, then you'd be stuck with an immobile 1B type
