What's the latest on Akiyama?

Is David price too much of a risk to trade for in your opinion?
Mark P
9:42
I sure wouldn't want him for $96MM over the next three years, but if the Red Sox paid $50MM of that?  I'd be game
9:43
Hang on, mistyped, meant to say $60MM.

If Price was a FA on the market right now, he wouldn't get three years/$46MM, not with his injury history
Sieve Adams
9:44
Encarnacion for the Rangers? 1B was quite weak for them last year, he has tons of upside at $8m-$10m.
Mark P
9:44
That would make a lot of sense.
Lindor for DeJong
9:45
Possible? What else needs to be added to the package? Lindor has 2 years of control at market rates (more or less). DeJong can be controlled through 2025 at rates that Cleveland could live with.
Mark P
9:46
Cleveland would ask for Gorman or Carlson along with DeJong, and be turned down.  Now, they'll obviously aim high in an initial ask, so it's a question or whether there are other, lesser STL prospects/younger players that would have the Tribe's interest and talks could continue.

It's also a question of how much the Indians think of DeJong as a player, as well

If the Cubs do sign Castellanos do you see them doing anything else?
Mark P
9:48
I think it's a moot point since Castellanos likely isn't returning.  Cubs have to pare off salaries first they can look at any additions, and Castellanos isn't really a great fit long-term

Will the Padres consider getting Whit Merrifield?
Mark P
9:49
The Padres are indeed among the many teams interested in Whit, but the Royals have a huge asking price: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/padres-rumors-merrifield-hedges...
Woeful Bay Area Fan
9:50
1st the NINERS lose at home and then we lose MadBum to AZ. What’s there to even look forward to this year?
Mark P
9:51
The Bay Area won three World Series titles and three NBA titles within the last decade, so one rough year isn't the end of the world.  Plus, the A's should continue to be really good in 2020
Mister E. Person
9:51
MadBum signs with the D-Backs!?! Your reaction...
Mark P
9:52
Really nice signing from Arizona, and apparently an opportune one, taking advantage of the Bumgarner family's love of the area.  I continue to be impressed with GM Mike Hazen's moves since he took over the club.
Offseason
9:52
Why did the Dbacks sell Greinke last season, then decide to sign MadBum? Seems like they should be rebuilding, not buying
Mark P
9:53
Ah, that's the trick --- Hazen and company have been able to remake the D'Backs without having to tank.  Arizona has remained a competitive team and should continue to be good in 2020
Dan
9:53
Does Eddie Rosario for Robbie Ray make sense for both teams?
Mark P
9:54
Rosario's low-avg, low-OBP and lack of defense isn't a great mix, though he is a nice power hitter.  I'd think the D'Backs would aim higher than that for Ray
David ross
9:56
Bryant for clevinger straight up?
Mark P
9:56
Tribe aren't going to take on another big salary
Alex
9:57
Giants fans are not happy with Farhan, but I think they're wrong. What's your impression of what he's been doing?
Mark P
9:58
i've written this before in these chats, but I think fans underestimate just how deep a hole the Giants were in going into last offseason and still continue to be in to some extent --- a lot of veteran players, almost all of whom didn't play particularly well in 2018 or 2019 (or both).
Against that difficult backdrop, Zaidi did well to move Melancon's contract entirely, and I can't fault him for keeping Bumgarner/Smith at the deadline when it seemed like the Giants could actually make a playoff run.  He still ended up with two draft picks for his troubles.

Hi Mark!  Thanks for chatting!  Will MLBTR ever have a story explaining UZR zone ratings and the other one please?  DHS or something like that?  A story in plain simple English for simpletons like me?  Like where/how they get their data and how it'scalculated?  It would be most enlightening!  Thanks!
Mark P

Fangraphs has a long explanation of how they calculate UZR: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-fangraphs-uzr-primer/

Who do you see taking a Yankee player or two to relieve the salary cap issue they have, and how much extra will have to be attached.
Mark P
10:02
The Yankees have been trying to shop J.A. Happ, and despite Happ's rough 2019, there are enough pitching-needy teams around that I could see a club taking the plunge.  Or, the Yankees add a good prospect onto Happ in a pure "sell a prospect" trade, like the Angels just did to unload Cozart
Steve
10:02
Joey Gallo - Will he ever hit 60 HR?
Mark P
10:03
Over the rest of his career?  Absolutely!

In a season?  Nope.  No offense to Gallo, but only five guys in the history of the sport have cracked the 60-homer threshold.  If I say no, it's an awfully safe bet.

10:04
Based on what’s happened so far in free agency and trades whom do you think is the most likely cubs player to be traded?
Mark P
10:05
Still seems like Bryant, though it seems like the Cubs are waiting for his grievance to be ruled on before they move ahead with anything
D-Tezz
10:05
Um..... what are the Mets doing with 6 starters?
Mark P
10:06
In fairness, they have some reason to wonder if Wacha is a reliable starter.  But overall, you're not wrong in perhaps wondering if the Mets are preparing to deal a starter
Kyle
10:07
Hey Mark any chance that the astros get a arm and any chance they get rid of Correa/reddick
Mark P
10:08
Speaking of teams waiting before making offseason moves....I wonder if the Astros aren't waiting for the suspension hammer to fall before figuring out how to go from there.  By that same token, I wonder if free agents aren't hesitant about joining a team that could be facing some heavy management suspensions/fines/loss of draft picks/etc.
Until we know for sure, it's hard to totally speculate about baseball-related moves.  But I think Houston would indeed move Reddick if they could, and maaaaaybe think about the same with Correa if possible, given his stated preference to test free agency rather than sign an extension

Do you believe if the Angels will take on Wade Davis' contract, that they could get Jon Gray without having to give up multiple players?
