MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

Gray is too valuable to the Rockies to unload him as part of a pure salary dump

It’s pretty amazin that the Cespedes grievance (and the Mets having cut off his 2019 pay) stayed quiet til settlement.  Does Cespedes have any trade value before/during spring training, or will he need to show he can play everyday (or almost every day) for the Mets to move him?
Mark P
10:12
In case you missed the Cespedes news: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/mets-yoenis-cespedes-agree-to-a...

You'd right, it's quite surprising that this news stayed under the radar for so long.  And Cespedes has no trade value at all at this point.

10:12
Do you all at MLBTR get assignments? Or is it like a free for all on the days you work/post? I’ve always wondering behind the scenes stuff like that.
Mark P
10:14
Obviously we have certain days lined up as particularly busy (the Winter Meetings, trade deadline day, non-tender deadline day, etc.) and we know we'll be writing about particular topics, but in general, it's a free-for-all!  Some shifts it'll be slow, and some shifts I'll have a dozen things to write about due to a bunch of news items breaking all at once
Big D
10:14
Does Keuchel still expect a big number contract and if so will he stay on the open market until May??
Mark P
10:15
Obviously his asking price has dropped since last winter, so I highly doubt Keuchel is in for another lengthy free agent stint.  Given how pitching is flying off the board, I wouldn't be shocked if he signed fairly soon

10:16
Will the Dodgers really give up Lux and May to get Lindor and Clevenger? Who’s getting the better deal?
Mark P
10:17
The Dodgers are getting the better deal since they're getting two established star players.  Lux and May are still wild cards, as promising as they might be.  If Cleveland made that offer to the Dodgers, I feel L.A. would absolutely accept, but I don't think the Indians would do that

Best Canadian player ever -- Larry Walker?  Ferguson Jenkins?  You're Canadian so you should know!
Mark P
10:18
Walker's the best position player, Fergie is the best pitcher.  Honourable mention to Joey Votto, but I think his downturn over the last couple of seasons puts Walker ahead.
Artie Moreno
10:20
Will I be looking for a new GM before start of season?
Mark P
10:21
(Arte Moreno = Angels owner)

Wait, before the start of THIS season?  As in "hey Billy Eppler, thanks for acquiring Rendon and Bundy, but here's your pink slip"?

If you mean before the start of the 2021 season, it's possible.  2020 is Eppler's last year under contract, so if the Angels don't make some serious progress, I suspect he'll be gone
Orioles
10:22
The Orioles should be a good example of why trades for prospects are fickle. Both acquired in the Machado deal, Yusniel Diaz is a total bust, but Dean Kremer looks like a legit rotation piece.
So for those who might have given up prospects this offseason, don't worry too much.
Mark P
10:23
Incidentally, this is why teams often insist on packages of prospects, rather than taking just one highly-touted guy.
Carlos Beltran
10:23
How much trouble, if any, will I be in if MLB discovers I lied about the sign stealing system. Idk how it’s possible for MLB to believe me that I had no clue about it.
Mark P
10:24
I'm not sure any suspensions or punishment levied towards the Astros can filter down to the players on their teams.  Is MLB going to suspend/fine everyone who played for Houston from 2016-19?  That seems a bit extreme.
Romo
10:25
Where do you think I sign? Twins or Marlins or somewhere else?
Mark P
10:26
All things being equal, one would think Romo would prefer to pitch for a contender like Minnesota
Matt
10:27
Does Bohm get Arizona’s attention in a trade for Ray?
Mark P
10:27
Absolutely, but the Phillies wouldn't move Bohm for just one year of Ray
Upset Angel Fans
10:28
Can Angels move on from Albert Pujols?
Mark P
10:28
In a word, no.
Lou
10:30
Who are some good starters that the Twins could target in a trade if they don't land Ryu or Keuchel?
Mark P
10:31
I'd be looking at Musgrove or Archer on the Pirates, maybe call the Red Sox about Price, D'Backs about Ray, the Dodgers about their surplus of younger arms
Braves Big Dreamer
10:32
Xmas list: resign JD and trade swanson and company for Lindor. Sickest 1-5 in baseball. Acuna-Lindor-Freeman-Donaldson-Albies. Any chance Santa hears me?
Mark P
10:33
That would have to be quite a bit of "and company," but the Braves have the prospect depth to get Cleveland's attention.  Re-signing Donaldson could be trickier, given Atlanta's payroll limitations and the number of other teams looking for 3B help
David
10:34
Why so many passes in rule 5 draft!?
Mark P
10:34
Some teams didn't have roster space, other teams didn't love any of the available players....lots of reasons
Giants Fan
10:35
Why do the giants want nicholas castenallos? He is a okay hitter, but his defending is so bad
Mark P
10:36
That rumor also struck me as a bit odd.  Maybe the Giants have a different take on his glovework than most, but Castellanos seems like an ill fit for that outfield
Angels fan
10:37
Who doesn’t like having Rendon on their team? But what will the Angels do you turn their starting pitching around? Anthony and Mike can only put up so many runs. We have to be able to prevent some
Mark P
10:38
I've seen a lot of "Angels need pitching, this is a disaster!" types of messages in this chat, and while their point isn't wrong, it's also just a few days after Anthony Rendon joined the team.  That's about as good as it gets.  It's not like the Angels also didn't need offensive help as well.
Matt
10:38
Conceivable that both Bryant and Contreras get moved?
Mark P
10:38
Conceivable, sure
Mlb535
10:39
Any chance the Jay's bring back Donaldson to support 1st, DH and 3rd?
Mark P
10:39
No chance
Yo
10:40
Any updates on Ryu and predictions on his contract?
Mark P
10:41
We actually had a reader poll about this topic earlier today: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/mlbtr-poll-hyun-jin-ryus-next-c...
I'm in the camp that thinks four years is a real possibility, despite all his injury issues.  The market is getting scarce for pitching, and Ryu is the best arm still out there
