Is there any truth to the rumors about the Padres acquiring Yelich and/or Hader?
Mark P
7:56
I would say zero chance on Yelich, and only a very small chance on Hader.  Milwaukee would move Hader if someone overpaid for him, but I don't think the Brewers are all that eager to ship him out for anything less than a big trade haul
The Brewers, after all, have to be thinking they can steal the NL Central this year

Thoughts on Dane Dunning this year and going forward? Nice little rebound off of TJ last year and looks to be at least a solid 3/4 no?
Mark P
7:57
A very solid pitcher.  That was a nice get by Texas.
Reds
7:59
They also lost Bauer
Mark P
8:00
Fair point.  I didn't include Bauer since I didn't think Cincy would be retaining him anyway.

Do the Jay's really just go with the rotation as is? Why sign so many 1 year deals but leave such a glaring hole (or two) in the rotation?
Mark P
8:01
The Jays are playing wait-and-see on a lot of pitchers, hoping that either Pearson lives up to the hype early, or some of the veteran guys has a rebound season.  It's pretty risky for a team hoping to contend, frankly.

Wouldn't it be cool if Miggy got his 500th homer and 3000th hit on the same hit?
Mark P
8:02
I feel like I'm overlooking someone obvious, but has any other player ever gotten that kind of a "double-milestone" hit before?
David Ortiz
8:04
Am I a Hall of Famer? I know I didn’t play the field much but I sure could hit that ball.
Mark P
8:04
Ortiz is definitely making the HOF

I just wanted to say thanks Mark, Tim and the rest of the team. Nobody seems to care about the fans and these great chats as much as you guys do. I check the site 40 times a day. Appreciate you all so much.
Mark P
8:05
Much obliged!

Are you suggesting that Slater won’t make the cut in SF?
Mark P
8:07
Slater is very likely to make the roster, oversight on my part.

How did you get your gig at MLBTR? My dream job!
Mark P
8:08
I applied and was fortunate enough to be selected.  Over 11 years later, I'm still hanging in!

Oscar Colas? Why hasn’t he signed? 22 years old and counting...
Mark P
8:10
A lot of teams have already spent much/all of their money in the 2020-21 international market, which didn't begin until 1/15/21 due to the pandemic.  Colas, by all accounts, is a very good prospect who thinks he deserves a top bonus, not whatever a team might be able to scrape together as leftovers within its bonus pool
Now, will Colas really wait until the next int'l window opens in January 2022?  Hard to say.

Will Kirilloff start opening day?
Mark P
8:13
There was an item about this earlier today, noting that it would be pretty dodgy of the Twins to hold Kiriloff back for "more Triple-A seasoning" (coughcoughservicetimemanipulationcough) when they thought enough of him to start a playoff game last October.

is jbj getting frozen out for a lower valued contract?
Mark P
8:16
If JBJ is still looking for four or more years (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/02/jackie-bradley-jr-reportedly-se...), then no wonder he's still without a team.  I'd have to believe that four-year ask has come down to some extent.

What would be considered a successful season for the Padres this year?
Mark P
8:19
I guess anything short of the NLCS?  That said, they might very well end up facing the Dodgers in the NLDS.

Does Mattingly ever get into the Hall?
Mark P
8:20
I would guess probably not, likely too short a prime as a true elite player.  If he were to win a World Series as a manager, however, I could see him getting some traction if the HOF ever institutes some type of "overall baseball career" veterans committee

On paper, Cardinals' rotation looks good but all but Flaherty have asterisks next to their names. I know Mo said big moves are done but doesn't St. Louis native Odorizzi or Porcello make sense?
Mark P
8:22
Porcello isn't exactly a sure thing himself, and the same could even be said about Odorizzi considering how little he actually pitched in 2020.  The Cards might be more prone to making a pitching add (if necessary) at the deadline rather than before Opening Day
Preseason Predictions!
8:23
do you hold any convictions about baseball that you think most fans would disagree with?
Mark P
8:24
I'd be totally okay if baseball instituted ties (after, say, three extra innings).  Judging by past polls I've done in this very chat, the big majority of fans don't agree
bravesfansince1966
8:26
seeing what Jake Lamb did with oakland last September is there much chance he could win the 3B job in Atlanta or strictly a bench bat?
Mark P
8:26
Lamb has never hit left-handed pitching well, so in all likelihood, the best he'll do is win the bigger share of a platoon
Phil S
8:28
With the aftermath of the Kevin Mather comments, do you think clubs will still engage in service time manipulation with MLB-ready prospects? Everyone already knew it was happening, but it seems like it’s only fueling the fire of a looming strike
Mark P
8:29
Some teams will absolutely still do it.  They could be risking a grievance, but if a team has a halfway plausible case (i.e. "this player hasn't had much time at Triple-A," or "this player missed some time in Spring Training"), that grievance probably won't lead to anything
