Story and Marquez, depending on whether or not the Rockies realize just how deep a hole they're in

Odorizzi to Astros makes too much sense for it not to get done, right?
Mark P
11:45
You'd think so, but the Astros are reportedly concerned about going over the luxury tax limit.

What are your division winner picks? Thanks.
Mark P
11:47
Braves, Cardinals, Dodgers, Yankees, Twins, Athletics
Delusional?
11:47
Cubs are winning the NL Central
Mark P
11:48
It's not out of the question.  For as much consternation as there has been over the Cubs in the last couple of years, people tend to forget that they've still been a very good team.  (In fact, that's the main reason for the consternation --- fans think a team so close to being true WS contenders shouldn't be nickel-and-diming the payroll.)

What pieces do you see the RedSox trading at the deadline if they are clearly out of the playoff race?
Mark P
11:51
Any of the pending free agents are natural choices, which means E-Rod, Ottavino, Barnes, Richards, Perez, maaaaaaybe Vazquez.  (Some of these guys are also on club options for 2022, like Vazquez.)

Bigger-ticket players like Eovaldi or JDM would also be shopped.

Chances that the Rays call up Wander Franco by the All-Star Break?
Mark P
11:52
Too soon.  He might be up by closer to the end of the season, however.

Because a lot of high minors guys on 40 man rosters burned an option last year without making any progress, do you think we’ll see a flood of interesting out-of-options names on the market in a couple weeks? Your mention of Derek Fisher made me think of that.
Mark P
11:53
Most definitely. I think we'll see a lot of action on the out-of-options front, though the sheer number might mean teams are able to sneak some guys through waivers (if other teams are waiting and keeping roster spots open for others they anticipate will be available).
11:54
The list of Out Of Options players, which I'd like to call the OOO List because it sounds delightfully silly.

Those who think the Rockies will trade Story or Marquez don’t understand how the Rockies operate. They will hold on to both until their market value vanishes.
Mark P
11:55
Quite possible.  Also, they're under no pressure to move Marquez since he's under contract for a few more years
THANK YOU FOR THESE CHATS!
11:56
Wild cards?
Mark P
11:57
Padres and Brewers in the NL

I will hedge on the AL and say White Sox and one of Tampa/Toronto
Tim Anderson
11:58
Now I'm done with you. We winning the division, AL. In the words of Jake Taylor, the whole F'ing thing.
Mark P
11:59
Keep in mind that Cleveland didn't actually win the Series in either of the two Major League movies.

("Actually Mark, they made more than just...")

Chicago should have a good team, no doubt, but I'm not sure if they're quite all the way there yet.

Chances good on a bounce back year from Willie Calhoun?
Mark P
12:01
Considering almost everything went sideways for him last season, sure, there's nowhere to go but up.  Calhoun barely got over 100 PA due to injury.

Any thoughts on Moniak? I think people are overly excited about a handful of games in Spring Training, and he's never necessarily hit at any level. But, he's 22 and the bat speed does play. Is the best yet to come or do we have a pretty sound idea of who he is
Mark P
12:03
If I'm the Phillies, I'm not exactly counting on him as a breakout guy, but as a short-term Haseley replacement, sure.  It's too early to write Moniak off, but obviously the team would have hoped to have seen a lot more from a guy picked first overall

I’d like to see Biggio stay at the top of the batting order. Proved his worth there, lengthens the lineup. Thoughts?
Mark P
12:06
I don't mind Biggio hitting first.  In theory, the Jays are overloaded on RH bats so Biggio could be moved down to break up the righties, but I also think Biggio is a natural OBP guy to have up at the top of a lineup

Does MLBTR ever review the 1-2 year FA signings from prior years?  Seems like Jed Lowrie type flops aren’t acknowledged as much as the Justin uptons?

The "no such thing as a bad one-year deal
12:09
Oops, hit enter too soon

The "no such thing as a bad one-year deal" rule applies in most of those cases, but ask any Mets fan, there was PLENTY of acknowledgement of the Lowrie signing as a bust

Saw Alana Rizzoli yesterday on MLB Network mention that Nomar suggested the Rockies would never have success until they put a roof on Coors Field. Is this something you very see happening?
Mark P
12:11
They'd have to build a new ballpark entirely, since I can't imagine Coors is designed in such a way that a retractable roof could just be attached easily
12:12
And I can't believe there's been any talk of replacing Coors Field any time soon.

If a team was concerned with exceeding the luxury tax, but had a chance to land a solid free agent, why couldn't they just add years to the contract to lower the AAV?
Mark P
12:13
If the player was open to it (i.e. LeMahieu this winter), teams would surely jump at the chance.  But it takes two sides to agree to such a deal

I'm curious, why isn't Carlos Delgado not even mentioned in HOF discussions?  My goodness, 475 home runs, 1512 RBI - and I don't remember any dopping scandals etc.... your thought's please - and good luck to my Giants
Mark P
12:16
It's crazy that Delgado was dropped off the ballot so quickly.  Even if you don't think he's a HOF-level player, he certainly deserved more attention.
