speaking of nickel and diming

in Chicago; shouldn't the White Sox be pushing in the chips more aggressively. odorizzi, for example would greatly improve their depth. so would have JBJ. sheesh

There's nothing to stop the Sox from making an acquisition during the season, once they know for sure where their strengths and weaknesses lie.  If any of the young pitchers struggle, for instance

good day, Mark. Is there a website or source that shows every players salary and what year of their contract they’re in? Thanks!
Mark P
12:19
Cot's Baseball Contracts and Roster Resource (found on Fangraphs) are two excellent go-to reference sites

Who do you think is gonna be the first pick in the NFL Lawrence or some one else?
Mark P
12:20
Ah, the obligatory sports-besides-baseball question of the week!

Unless there's something wrong with Lawrence's shoulder, I have to believe he's a lock at 1-1
Gallo
12:21
Am I extended or traded this year?
Mark P
12:21
I think an extension is more likely than a trade, but I lean towards neither happening.  The Rangers likely want more info on Gallo before committing to a longer-term deal, given that 2020 was kind of a write-off for him

Will the Mariners be flipping any of their minors OF talent to start the ramp up to contention next year? The idiotic ex-ceo may make this untenable i.e. Kelenic. Sell high or ride the talent train for 6 years knowing he's gone the minute he can leave?
Mark P
12:24
Six years is a long time.  If Kelenic lives up to expectations and the M's offer him a big extension, he might very well stay and become a Seattle lifer (particularly if the team is in contention by that point).

do you remember the year Bob Gibson batted 6th in the cardinal lineup when he pitched and was one of their top pinch hitters
Mark P
12:26
Gibson retired before I was born, but you may be referring to his 1970 season, when Gibson hit .303/.347/.404 over 124 PA.

Not a hot take: Bob Gibson ruled.

Should I consider an extension from the Sox, or should I wait until  I hit FA?
Mark P
12:26
If they're offering enough to make it worth your while, sure.
Big Red Machine
12:27
Why do you think the Reds stayed put with the team they have? They let multiple guys walk, and it seems like they were never truly in on free agents. Rebuilding? No money? Depleted farm?
Mark P
12:31
The Reds' plan was to splurge in 2020 and pick up extra revenues from selling more tickets (as Cincy fans watched their competitive team) and from playoff revenues.  The postseason appearance briefly happened, but with no fans in the stands, it added up to a pretty big financial hit for a medium-market team.

Now, this all being said, it also doesn't make a lot of logic to just abandon everything, though the Reds didn't actually do this.  They cut some bullpen salaries but held onto Suarez, Castillo, etc.  What they didn't do, as you noted, was actually significantly build on a roster that took some notable losses, like Bauer.  Is that enough to compete in an NL Central where nobody did a whole lot of anything?  It's possible, but if the Reds falter, Cincinnati fans can be excused for being upset at seeing this as a gigantic missed opportunity

Breaking news, Odorizzi to Houston
Justin
12:36
No love for the Jays good to know.  What did you vote?
Mark P
12:37
The poll creator actually can't cast a vote themselves, which seems odd.

But I am cautiously picking the over, even if it's just 89 wins.  Too much uncertainty in that pitching staff for my liking, and any sort of head-to-head competition with Tampa worries me since the Rays have owned the Jays for years

Does the international signing period revert back to july at some point?
Mark P
12:38
Next year's signing period will also open in January, but after that, it should theoretically revert to July 2.

That's assuming, however, that the international signing format isn't completely changed in the new CBA, which is a possibility
12:40
Looks like i've got a Jake Odorizzi post to write, so with that, we'll sign off on this week's chat.  Thanks for all the questions!
