That said, Lindor's extension has already eased the market to some extent
Sarah Smile
9:34
What can Lindor expect from endorsements now ?
Mark P
9:35
"Hi folks, Francisco Lindor here.  How many times has this happened to you?  You have a bass and you're trying to find an exciting new way to prepare it for dinner..."

Miggy 122 hits 12 hr from 3000 500

One of my biggest wishes for the season is that Cabrera's 3000th hit and 500th homer are the same hit
Braves
9:38
Why haven't the Braves extended Freeman?
Mark P
9:39
I wouldn't yet assume an extension isn't happening.  The "Opening Day deadline" isn't set in stone for everyone, and in cases where it's a longtime player talking with the team, they might still be working out final details.

Does Carlson keep the CF job when Bader returns?
Mark P
9:42
Mo = John Mozeliak, Cardinals POBO

Probably not, though I can the Cards being somewhat fluid with where their outfielders specifically play over the course of the season.  It helps to have the flexibility to move guys around to different positions during a game, for instance

Braves nab a gold glove utility bench piece. I have personally been impressed with what AA does within his ownership restraints. How's your opinion on his ability to construct as the season progresseu and also his early off season strike fast style?
Mark P
9:44
It's usually a good tactic to zig when the other teams are zagging, and I liked the Braves' methods in quickly getting Morton and Smyly last winter.  Morton was more keen to go to Atlanta anyway given his geographical preferences, so AA just moved in and got it done rather than drag his feet or try to wait Morton out for a lower price

That allowed the Braves to sit back to some extent while the rest of the league had to then do a bit more scrambling (to some extent) for the other available arms.

What's the pulse on the interest in the Blue Jays in Toronto? After a season in Buffalo and no plans to play in Toronto on the horizon, are the fans still as vested as before?
Mark P
9:47
I think fans are definitely still invested in the team, and Toronto is eager to get back to watching the Jays in person.  Especially if this team is winning.
Hershiser’s or DiMaggio’s?
9:47
Which record would you make a “lottery pick” bet that is broken first? Slight edge for DiMaggio’s is my wild guesstimate.
Mark P
9:49
Hershiser's scoreless inning streak seems way likelier to be broken than DiMaggio's hitting streak.  Not that topping Hershiser is "easy" by any means, but we've seen other pitchers get comparatively hot for extended stretches.  Whereas nobody has really come too close to DiMaggio in 70 years.

Overreaction alert: Yermin Mercedes...ROY and MVP!

Then again, Mercedes might break DiMaggio's record by the end of June

More boos in the Bronx this year: Gary Sanchez or Giancorlo Stanton
Mark P

From the sounds of it today, Jay Bruce was getting booed for most of the game!

Any chance of mid year add of DH to NL? Some pitcher gonna get hurt from swinging too hard or something that will cause uproar.
Mark P
9:52
Changing the rule mid-season might not even be logistically possible.  Even if it was, it would be too much of a disruption, and I think some teams would be rightly upset at such a major competitive advantage or disadvantage suddenly appearing once the season has already begun

Who has a better chance at post season play- NYY or NYM ?  How shocked are you if both make it or both get eliminated?
Mark P
9:54
I'd be very surprised if the Yankees don't make the playoffs, whereas the Mets are more of a borderline prediction.  Wouldn't be surprised at all, however, if the Mets also make the postseason field.

Can you figure out what direction the Cubs are going in? Rebuild?Retool? They seem rudderless to me
Mark P
9:57
Rats, bad night for me clicking up new questions before answering older ones!
9:58
Re: the Orioles.  If the team doesn't start to have a good young core in place by the end of the 2022 season, some questions have to start being asked.  I realize the front office had a whole lot to address and fix with the organization, but there should be some tangible process being made after four years for Elias and company
9:59
Re: the Cubs.  I think everyone in Chicago is asking that same question (well, maybe not White Sox fans, who are just delighted by the Cubs' situation and/or are busy buying Mercedes jerseys).

The Cubs have the feel of a team that would like to retool but not publicly admit that they're doing so, in order to save the public relations hit.
Braves
10:01
Any chance Liberty Media sells the Braves anytime soon?
Mark P
10:02
I guess there's a chance, since the Cardinals owner told us all that baseball isn't a very profitable business.

Crazy love for the Bass-o-matic reference. I'd bet most/many in this chat had no idea. Just us old folks.

Thoughts on how MLB will handle the Cardinals and Reds incident today?
Mark P
10:04
If last season was any indication, I could see the league handing out some serious suspension time due to the violations of health/safety protocols
Show me the money
10:05
How does deferred money count against the "salary cap?"
Mark P
10:06
If Player X signs a two-year, $40MM contract, it counts as a $20MM luxury tax number in each of the two seasons.  Deferred money doesn't factor into it.
10:08
That's it for me tonight, thanks for all the questions!
