Chisholm has long been a well-regarded prospect, so it isn't like it's a shock that he would play well in the big leagues (though not "1.045 OPS" well).  He certainly looks like a player to watch, and if he's an early breakout guy, that's a big step forward for Miami

Is it time for the Angels to dangle Joe Adell for a front line pitcher?
Mark P
12:01
There we are, the obligatory Jo Adell trade question!

The Halos could surely get just about top-tier arm available if they put Adell on offer.  But, they also had all offseason to make such a move, and i don't think they're ready to move on from Adell just yet.
12:04
Sorry for the pause, had to post about a roster move.....Greg Holland back from the IL, Royals DFA'ed Brad Brach

If you were Colorado GM would you trade Miguel Andujar ( 4 years left) AND Clint Frazier (4 years) plus clarke shmidt (6 years) for German Marquez AND rental Trevor Story.?   To be honest I think they are going to have better years like in the past. Please answer your opinion why yes or not. thanks a lot.
Mark P
12:05
No, because Schmidt is currently dealing with an elbow injury.  The Yankees would have to include a different top-tier prospect than Schmidt to get Colorado's attention for such a trade.

Wait, how can someone return from the IL in one day?
Mark P

Holland was on the COVID injured list

Do the Twins extend Buxton this year despite his injury histories.
Mark P
12:10
Our own TC Zencka explored this question back in March (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/03/mlbtr-poll-should-the-twins-ext...) and it's an more fascinating topic considering Buxton's hot start this year.

Ultimately it would depend on the money involved, but if I'm the Twins, I'm still hesitant to commit a truly huge sum to a player until he can prove he can stay on the field for an extended amount of time.  If I'm Buxton, however, maybe I'm open to taking a slightly lesser amount of money or a slightly shorter-term type of extension due to this same injury concern --- maybe Buxton would like to lock in some guaranteed money now rather than risk further injury and losing his opportunity to cash in

Who's catching for the Giants in 2022? Thanks Mark!
Mark P
12:12
My guess is a combo of Posey and Bart.  Posey will return for one more season on a lower-cost contract, with Bart getting a good chunk of ABs to prepare him for the everyday job in 2023.  This is all just speculation and a gut feeling on my part, however.

Love how Yankees fans are still talking up Andujar like he is a big asset, in particular to an NL team. He’s not the centerpiece player of a trade for a big name player and hasn’t been for two years!
Mark P
12:13
Yeah, that was the other flaw in that proposed trade offer.  Schmidt being hurt is the bigger issue, but Andujar has also basically not played in two seasons.

Does cutting yoshi tsutsugo make sense for the Rays?
Mark P
12:14
If he keeps hitting .170, yeah.  But given how the Rays like to have as much depth as possible and they'd be eating the money anyway, I'm not sure if they'd just outright cut Tsutsugo unless they think he absolutely can't contribute.

My chance of winning the Cy Young this year?
Mark P

*Insert the Pete Campbell "not great, Bob!" GIF here*
That said, Matz has looked quite solid with Toronto, and could certainly end up having a nice season.

A's still winning. Chalk it up to lower levels of competition or some of the regulars turning the corner? Still got the Angles to win the West?
Mark P
12:18
There's some good luck baked into any 12-game winning streak, obviously, but Oakland is just a solid team.  I still had them as strong contenders to win the AL West even despite all their offseason losses since they just always seem to figure something out.
Angles winning the West?
12:19
That’s an acute observation, even if it’s a little obtuse.

Right?

Is Colome done as closer?
Mark P
12:21
Early returns haven't been great, but it is a small sample size, and his outing the other day was really the fault of some bad defense.  I would think Minnesota prefers Rogers as their "highest-leverage situation" guy rather than use him only in save situations, so Colome might still be the best bet as a traditional closer.

Is Vlad Guerrero Jr the real deal or just a hot start?
Mark P
12:23
Since I've written "still early" in regards to a bunch of struggling players, I'm obligated to note that it's still early to gauge red-hot hitters like Vladdy.

But given Guerrero's top-prospect reputation, nobody would be surprised if it's all clicking for him.

Does ownership allow me to bust through the luxury tax threshold if the team remains in contention? I don't think I want to strip the farm system I've tried so hard to rebuild.
Mark P
12:25
(Bloom = Red Sox chief baseball officer)

Since the team reset its luxury tax status last year, I don't think ownership would object to going over the threshold again this year and paying a tax in order to add more pieces to a contender.  Boston seems to be willing to spend above the tax line for a year or two, but not incur the increasing three-year repeater tax.

Chances the NL adopts the DH next year, Pujols signs a one year deal with the Cards, and reaches 700 HR wearing the birds on the bat?
Mark P
12:27
Pujols has 665 career home runs at the moment.  I really don't think he'll hit well enough to justify the playing time necessary to reach 700 homers.  Frankly, it might take more than the 2022 season to do it.

I threw this trade idea out a bunch in the offseason, but who would say no now.......Carter Kieboom to the Mariners for Marco Gonzales?
Mark P
12:29
The Mariners almost surely say no.   This season's poor start notwithstanding, Gonzales has been a quality pitcher who is controlled on a very reasonable contract.  If Seattle was to move Gonzales, they'd want more than just Kieboom.

Do the White Sox stretch out Kopech and give him Cease’s spot in the rotation? If yes, when.
Mark P
12:30
This is probably the eventual plan, but obviously the Sox want to take it easy on easing Kopech back into starting duties

Where is this narrative that VGJ was ever not the real deal? He had a 106 OPS+ / 105 wRC+ in 2019 - Then followed that up with a 116 OPS+ / 112 wRC+ in 2020 -  Those are hard numbers to acheive in MLB @ 20 & 21 years of age. This is the traditional path of high end prospects, have we just been spoiled by the likes of Trout, Acuna, Tatis Jr and have lost perspective?
Mark P
12:31
You are preaching to choir on this point.  Factor in that Guerrero's second season was the very weird pandemic year, too.
Clay
12:32
Tiger baseball is unwatchable and it has been that way for the last five years. Do you think they will make some changes?
Mark P
12:33
They have been going through a lengthy rebuild, to be fair.  But if there isn't real and obvious progress by some point in the 2022 season, hard questions will need to be asked by ownership about what exactly the plan is.
MikeD
12:34
With A-Rod and likely Pujols falling short of 700, will we see a player break 700 HRs again?  Trout?
