Trout's a possibility, and it's plausible that the younger guys like Soto, Acuna, Tatis, could get there but obviously that's a very long way off.

Which team am I on August 1st, 2021?
Mark P

The Angels
Zaidi

will i finally hold a fire sale with all these 1-yr contracts?
Mark P
12:38
(Farhan Zaidi = Giants president of baseball operations)

I think by now we know that "fire sale" isn't Zaidi's M.O.  I can certainly see the Giants in a pragmatic buyer-and-seller mode at the deadline, especially if they're close to a wild card, but I highly doubt you'll see some high-level selloff unless the team totally craters out of contention

If Kimbrel keeps up this great season and if the Cubs end up trading him, what type of return could they expect?  Remember he's got another year of team control and the Cubs gave up a huge prospect for a few months of Chapman.
Mark P

It'd take a real perfect storm of circumstances for another team to "pull a Cubs" and give Chicago a Gleyber Torres-level prospect for only a couple months' of Kimbrel.  Sure, he has another year of control via a club option, but that option is worth $16MM --- pretty high for a guy who turns 33 in a month, and who wasn't great in 2019 or 2020
Not to say that Kimbrel doesn't have trade value, but hoping for a Torres type of prospect is a bit much.  I'd expect any team acquiring Kimbrel would be doing so with the view of him as a rental player, so that would lower their offer

Has Giancarlo turned into a two outcome guy? Seems if he doesn’t get out, he hits a solo dinger. The new Adam Dunn perhaps?

"Does getting hurt count as a third outcome?" --- Yankees fans, angrily

Is there anyone funner than Corbin Burnes to watch pitch at the moment? Good lord is he good!
Mark P
12:45
Burnes vs. deGrom could be a Cy Young battle for the ages
CarGo
12:46
Am I retired? Seems like I could get a chance as a bench bat and backup corner OF for somebody.
Mark P
12:47
No official word on a retirement for CarGo, but he didn't play last season after he was released by the Mariners pretty early in Summer Camp.  I'd guess he's probably unofficially done, though it was quite an impressive career.

Why do LAA fans want to trade Adell so bad? It seems a lot of the proposals come from LAA fans. I can’t think of another top 5 prospect that a fans base fell all over itself to rid themselves of.
Mark P
12:50
That earlier question about Vlad Jr. addressed this --- I think a lot of fans have been spoiled in this era of Soto, Tatis, Acuna, etc.  Nowadays, fans expect these hyped mega-prospects to be great immediately, and if they struggle or have slow starts (like 99% of all ballplayers do, especially very young ones), they're immediately written off as busts.  Ironically, you even heard this from some corners of Angels fandom in 2011 when Trout wasn't anything special during his late-season callup.

Now, Adell hasn't helped himself by not hitting well, and with all of his defensive issues.  But, that was also his first MLB exposure, and it was coming in the midst of the strangest season of all time.

Is deGrom this great because he is a Met or despite of being one? Would he have developed as he did if he have been drafted by a different team?
Mark P
12:53
I forget which writer recently made this point in an article, so I apologize for the lack of a proper citation.  But their point was that the Mets haven't really had a problem in drafting or developing quality talent.  The issues come in adding talent in trades or free agency, or in keeping people healthy, or in keeping the Wilpons from making bad decisions.
You've hit on the frustration many Mets fans have felt over the years --- this team has had plenty of talent, but just can't ever seem to put things together.

What is the purpose of a mutual option? It seems to be an almost fruitless gesture: if the player does well, they opt out on their end; if they don't do well, the organization opts out. Thoughts?
Mark P
12:55
They're essentially a "good compromise leaves everyone made" type of detail.  I can't remember the last time a mutual option was actually exercised by both parties, but it provides a bit of leverage if neither side is willing to budge on a player option, team option, or vesting option.

Where do you see top FA SS landing this offseason??
Mark P

Normally I'd answer this question, but since I can never resist an opportunity to show off my English degree...."from this time forth I never will speak word."

That's all for me this week, be back with another chat next weekend
