What is going on that I haven't bee able to offer an extension to Freeman?
Mark P
8:50
We technically don't know that offers weren't made during the offseason --- all we know (via Freeman's comments in April) is that talks aren't currently ongoing.

Keep in mind, the Braves tend to keep rumors very in-house, which can be good for their purposes but it does lead to a lot of speculation.  I'd be surprised if they didn't have some level of in-depth talks with Freeman's camp.

When do the Orioles trade John Means for prospects? How much will they get?
Mark P
8:53
As someone who wrote in this very chat a few weeks ago that Means was only an okay trade asset.....well, I'm definitely eating my words.

He's looked tremendous thus far, and if he really has turned the corner and become a legit front-of-the-rotation type of pitcher, Baltimore's asking price will suddenly be enormous.  That kind of quality pitcher + control through the 2024 season = a big return for the O's. At this point, I think they'd want more than the Pirates got for Musgrove.

What kind prospects would the White Sox pay to get Kris Bryant from the Cubs?
Mark P
8:54
The Jose Quintana trade notwithstanding, I severely doubt you'll see the Cubs and White Sox join forces on another major deal anytime soon.

How do you think the Nats do over the remainder of the season? Seems possible we could be seeing 2 disappointing years in a row.
Mark P
8:57
Obligatory "slow start in 2019" mention first...

If the Nats did keep struggling and they decided to sell at the deadline, they're well-equipped for such a pivot since so many players are on expiring contracts.  I will say, however, that the Nats would certainly still have a surge in them, once everyone is healthy and perhaps has that COVID outbreak fully in the past
Pitchers
8:57
Why is in-game workload determined by pitch-count, but season-long workload determined by innings pitched? Over the course of a season is a 90-pitch, 4-inning start really half as taxing as a 90-pitch, 8-inning start?
Mark P
8:58
I think "innings limit" is essentially just shorthand, since teams obviously monitor both innings and pitches in evaluating a hurler's workload.

Who throws next weeks no hitter? Or the week after if need be
Mark P
9:01
That's why no-hitters are so fun, and why I personally don't think they're really being "cheapened" even if we're seeing a few more than usual.  Musgrove, Rodon, Bumgarner*, Means, Miley.....if you were told before the season that there would be five four no-hitters by May 9, would you have picked any of those names?

Gore, abrahams,  campusano to Washington ( if they are out of it at midseason) for soto , who says no?
Mark P
9:01
Nationals, in a heartbeat.  They aren't trading Soto, period.
Dodgers
9:02
Time to panic? Is it just the injuries? If so, when will we get healthy?
Mark P
9:03
I'd say it's ultimately just the injuries, so I'm not too worried about the Dodgers

This Adolis Garcia on the Rangers is amazing on my team lol how did we get him I can’t find it I think it was a trade of some sort right?? Thanks man have a good one!
Mark P
9:05
Texas acquired Garcia from the Cardinals in December 2019 for nothing more than cash considerations --- St. Louis had DFA'ed him.

Just the kind of common transaction that seems to fly completely under the radar....until it doesn't.

Why is the baseball writers so down on the A's when they look very solid but get no respect from you guys?  Last place Angels get more love from you guys.
Mark P
9:09
I admit to being high on the Angels prior to the season, but I'm not at all surprised that Oakland has continued to play well.  The A's have made a practice out of delivering when they're counted out.

April was nice and a glimpse of hopefully what’s to come but if this losing streak of a week lingers into mid-late May, wouldn’t make sense to move the players on the last year of their contract like Soler, Tucker, & Alberto so KC can reap some kind of return if possible and finally play Isbel, Oliveras, & Gutierrez consistently to see where they are at moving forward?
Mark P
9:11
This seems like a pretty logical scenario.  If the Royals aren't in realistic contention, I don't see the front office making any wild moves just for a longshot hope at a wild card berth.
KC has shown they're willing to play the long game, and it doesn't seem yet like it's time to make a true all-in push.

Why dont the tigers call up manning and let their prospect pitchers develop together in the majors
Mark P
9:12
Because their prospect pitchers already lost a year of minor league development, and it doesn't help anyone if an unseasoned prospect is getting shelled by MLB hitters

Seems like everytime cardinals score big one day, they come back next day & cant score. Is there something to that ?
Mark P
9:13
Momentum is the next day's starting pitcher, as Earl Weaver once said

Akil Baddoo looked like Superman 3 weeks ago, but now it seems he can't handle the curve ball. Will the Tigers hold on to him all season or let him go back to the Twins if he doesn't improve ?
Mark P
9:14
The Tigers have nothing to lose by letting Baddoo try to figure things out.  Unless they really sour on the guy, I suspect he'll be a Tiger for the rest of 2021 and then the team will have his rights
Party like it's 2012

Buster Posey and Evan Longoria look like they're back in their primes! How long does this keep up?
Mark P
9:17
The Giants having success due to a group resurgence of their "old guys" (Posey, Longoria, Belt, Crawford) is a very fun storyline, and something I don't think anyone could have predicted.  To be perfectly logical about it, some regression is inevitable, but don't forget, Belt and Crawford were both really good last year.  Maybe there is something to their rebound
Robin Ventura

I got shelled by nolan ryan.

Haha, oh man.  Poor Robin Ventura had a terrific baseball career, but the first thing anyone remembers about him....
Rick Porcello

Why are Jedd Gyrko and I unemployed?
Mark P
9:20
In Gyorko's case, it's because he has stepped away from playing for a managerial opportunity: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/04/jedd-gyorko-to-manage-mlb-draft...

As for Porcello, maybe it's too high an asking price on his end, or maybe teams just simply don't think he has anything left in the tank

Is Pujols coming home to St.Louis to finish his Hall of Fame career?
Mark P
9:21
To be blunt about it, if his name wasn't Albert Pujols, would you see any point in the Cards signing a 1B-only, 41-year-old player who is coming off five below-average seasons?

It would be a purely sentimental add for the Cardinals, and unless Pujols himself is willing to take such a ceremonial last bow for a game or two, I don't see it happening.
