Was it a mistake to take this job?
Mark P
9:01
Since there are only 30 GM/PoBO openings in all of baseball, no.

will the Yankees go over the 210 tax threshold to stay in the race? their lineup needs some help and quick.
Mark P
9:04
Like I said before, the organization's top priority is getting under the $210MM threshold and resetting their tax number.  The idea seems to have taken hold around baseball that receiving the maximum tax penalty as a "three-timer" is just too much of a financial burden to bear......ignoring, of course, that these teams are all making tons of money (pandemic notwithstanding)

Will Red Sox go after big pitcher if they stay in the hunt? They can’t really rely on Sale being what he was.
Mark P
9:05
The feeling about the Red Sox seems to be that they won't deal any of their major prospect capital at the deadline, so finding a "big" pitcher might be a reach.  But I do think they'll get some rotation help in general, if not a front-of-the-rotation type.

I just watched Nomadland and loved it. Have you seen it and what did you think of it?
Mark P
9:06
I wouldn't have given it Best Picture, but it was a fascinating movie

Will we look for an outfield rental at the deadline?
Mark P
9:07
Almost definitely.  With it still being unclear if Robert will even play again in 2021, outfield is a clear need for the ChiSox

Am I one the 30ish pitchers you would take over Nolan Ryan?
Mark P
9:08
Yep
Cap space
9:09
How many clubs have the extra cap space and how much will be effective with the deadline a month early?
Mark P
9:11
Baseball has a luxury tax, not a salary cap.  The penalty for going over the tax threshold (which is a healthy $210MM) is a pretty minor financial penalty, especially if this is your first time exceeding the threshold.

The league and the owners have done a solid job of convincing fans at large that the luxury tax is some kind of actual barrier that carries significant punishment if it's exceeded

With the slow starts of Vaughn, Gilbert, and Kelenic, do you think we will see a trend of teams beginning to overcook their prospects in the minor leagues?
Mark P
9:14
Most prospects struggle when they first hit the big leagues.  The ones that don't, many of them usually hit a wall in their second season, or perhaps even 4-5 months into their rookie year.  Fans have been spoiled by Soto, Acuna, and the rare gems who are stars from the jump.

You're literally answer questions about movies, comic books and cap space. Haha. Joke.

In fairness, that Nomadland question might have been about the A's stadium search

If the Yankees are out of playoff contention by trade deadline, is there any way you could see them trading Judge for future resources? Could get a really nice return with the year he's having plus with the extra year of control he's got.
Mark P
9:19
I don't ultimately think the Yankees will give Judge an extension, so he would be a pretty fascinating trade chip if NYY did pivot and decide to sell at the deadline.  The fans would be irate, of course, but since they'd be irate anyway in the event of a non-playoff season and the team being deadline sellers, the Yankees could decide to just take the bad PR hit all at once.

Plus, they could try to spin it as a positive, like how the last Yankees "rebuild" brought back Gleyber Torres

Do the cards do anything at the deadline? They have so much money freeing up at the end of the year, and they still have to keep Nolan happy, they gotta add at least a BP arm and a bat no?
Mark P
9:22
Reporter Jeff Jones made the observation earlier today that the Cardinals haven't actually made a "big deadline trade" in quite some time, so St. Louis fans might not want to get too anxious expecting some blockbuster.

Some relief help certainly seems feasible, and while a healthy Tyler O'Neill will help, another outfield bat seems like the biggest possible lineup need

Does a clear HOFer player who is active but is playing well below an average player hurt their chances of a HOF election by prolonging their career ?  Say Puljois or Cabrerra
Mark P
9:24
Not really.  Players like Pujols or Cabrera were already so clearly locked into Cooperstown that some (or even 5-6) subpar years at the back end of their careers won't hurt their cases.

So it’s May 30 and a team six games out should sell?  That’s a take I hope the owner doesn’t follow up on
Mark P
9:27
It's early, sure.  But I haven't seen much from the Reds that would lead me to believe they've got another gear left in them.  At this moment, they look like sellers to me.

Wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong about something, however.  I once pronounced the word "possibly" as "possibl-eye."

Is the A’s to Las Vegas or Portland just a ploy to put a little more pressure on Oakland to get the stadium situation settled?
Mark P
9:28
Not a "ploy" in the sense that the A's would have no real desire to change cities, since I think they're certainly open to the idea. Remember, if it wasn't for the Giants flexing their territorial rights muscles, the A's would've probably already been playing in Fremont or San Jose.

If another city comes up with a sweetheart offer, I think the A's would definitely leave town.

Do the NL West teams have an advantage playing the unbalanced schedule? The top three teams' cumulative record against the bottom two is 26-7, a .788 winning percentage.
Mark P
9:29
Yes and no, since whatever advantage the Padres/Dodgers/Giants have is countered by the fact that they also have to play so many games against the other two good teams.
Justin Verlander
9:29
Does TJ hurt my HOF chances? Do I need a really good year or 3 after TJ to realistically have a HOF chance?
Mark P
9:30
Verlander is a slam-dunk HOFer.
Moreno
9:30
We are in 6th losing season should I stop throwing money at this. Just let young players play? Do the un thinkable and trade Trout and get out from that contract?
Mark P
9:32
"Get out from" a contract implies that it's somehow a burden on the team, which is clearly isn't since Trout is playing great.

It is looking increasingly likely that the Angels might need a top-to-bottom organizational overhaul.  That also might mean Moreno needs to just stay away from baseball ops decisions and let the front office do their thing, but it remains to be seen if he is willing to take that step.

Fremont is actually in A's territory. They just don't want to build it there since there is no real estate development opportunity.
Mark P
9:35
That's an interesting detail, I wasn't aware of that.

The fact that organizations (and the league itself) now insist that every new stadium also needs to have some kind of "ballpark village" development surrounding it is pretty eye-rolling, from a fan perspective.
I get that teams want to maximize revenue, but it comes off as so nakedly lame
John
9:38
its a little early. But how do you see the top 3 picks in the draft going?
Mark P
9:39
I'm not the guy to ask when it comes to draft prospects since I'm just going by what the pundits say.  Seems like the consensus has some version of Lawlar, Rocker, and Leiter, but Baseball America's most recent mock draft had some interesting wrinkles....I think Rocker dropped down to 7th or 8th.

As always, one team having a differing evaluation of one prospect can throw the whole thing off.
