Again, I'm not sure that the Mariners will necessarily be looking to sell.

Beyond that, Toronto doesn't seem like a great fit.  Biggio has been struggling, but I'm sure the Jays feel he'll be the 3B regular once he returns from the IL

How do the Astros keep coming up with guys like Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier?
Mark P
9:18
The Astros have a good player development system, simple as that.

Do you think Steve Cohen would (he probably should) be willing to exceed the CBT, especially with all of the injuries on the roster? I think taking back a bad contract might be a good way to drive down the prospect cost. How about taking on the Chris Davis contract as a way to get John Means (assuming he's healthy)?
Mark P
9:22
Cohen has said that he'd be willing to exceed the tax if circumstances dictate, but seemed wary of doing it this season.  Granted, he said this back during the winter, so it's possible his tune could change if the Mets have a legit chance at the division.

The O's would certainly be open to a Means/Davis trade package, but moving a huge trade asset like Means only for the sake of saving money would seem like kind of a waste, even for an Orioles team that is clearly trying to save dollars.

What pitching can the Angels get with the farm system they have? What starting pitchers are FA after this season?

Has any scouts’ minds changed at all on Kelenic’s ceiling after his first taste of the bigs and near 0-40 slump, or is it still too early?
Mark P
9:25
I doubt it, since lots of terrific players didn't do well in their first few weeks/months/even years in the majors.

Stolen bases are up this year, I like it... I like it a lot!
Mark P
9:27
Well, no wonder.  The catchers are probably having trouble transferring and throwing baseballs that are covered in every foreign substance known to man.

Are the Indians gonna get tempted to deal Jose Ramirez next month?  I just don't see them contending this year.
Mark P
9:29
As long as Cleveland has that pitching staff, they'll keep trying to contend.  Barring a total collapse, I don't see them moving Ramirez until maybe the 2022-23 offseason
Kate Upton

Verlander!!
Mark P
9:30
With all due respect, Undoubtedly The Real Kate Upton, you're a little biased in the matter.

Incidentally, really close poll going here.  Scherzer has a slim 55-45 edge at the moment.

Wow, that was terrible advice. A valedictorian can never be cool.

Should I sell off only guys on expiring contracts and do a mini retooling of the team, or do I also sell off guys like Berrios in a mini rebuild with an eye on contending again in 2023-beyond?
Mark P
9:33
(Levine = Twins GM)

I suspect the Twins see this as a Murphy's Law year and are planning to reload for 2022.  That means a Berrios deal is unlikely, unless he's already given private indications that he isn't planning to sign an extension, or won't re-sign with the team after next year

When will substances on baseball begin being enforced?
Mark P
9:36
I think the first step is probably the league just saying the rules will be enforced, sort of a "hey guys, knock it off" kind of warning.  If teams don't get the hint, you'll start seeing more overt cases of umpires openly checking "random" players between innings.

Stanton can’t be done as on OFer at this age?
Mark P
9:37
Given that he keeps getting injured even as just a DH, putting him into the outfield for any extended amount of time seems like a problem just waiting to happen

Are the Phillies really a .500 team? They are constantly hovering there but I feel like they are actually worse.
Mark P
9:40
Rick, you've hit on the weird dichotomy that has phrustrated Philly phans for the last phew years.  A case can definitely be made that this team wasn't yet ready to be pushed into contention.....and yet now that ship has sailed by spending so much on Harper/Wheeler/JTR/Cutch and with having talent like Hoskins and Nola on hand.

If the Yanks are hovering around ,500 in late july. Could they be sellers? If so, can Chapman bring back another Gleyber/? Assuming they're off the IL. Can Britton, Voit, Severino bring back MLB  ready players? they all have 1 more year or more of team control.
Mark P
9:42
In the wake of the Gleyber trade, rival teams would be particularly wary about giving up anything of major value in exchange for Chapman.

If the Yankees are well back of Tampa, Boston (and since I'm a fan, Toronto) in the AL East, I think they would look to sell, and try to convince fans that it's 2016 redux and they're going to bring back some great assets.

Is Vladdy surprising anyone or simply playing to his potential?
Mark P
9:43
We're less than two years removed from Vlad being the consensus #1 prospect in baseball, so this shouldn't be that surprising.

Is a Grade 12 Valedictorian a real Valedictorian? Us in the States are still trying to figure it DeGrassi
Mark P
9:45
I'm old enough that "Grade 13" still existed back when I was in high school.

And I hate to break the illusion, but the average Canadian high school isn't much like Degrassi.  For example, not one of my classmates went on to become a major international music star.

Any possibility that the Rays will sell high on Rich Hill in a month or so? Have some great young arms on the way.
Mark P
9:46
That would be bold even for the Rays.  It's one thing if you trade a Snell or let a Morton walk during the offseason, but it's a bigger psychological blow to a contending team if the front office just swaps your ace for prospects in midseason.

Do the Padres still have anything down on the farm to be active at the deadline?
Mark P
9:49
The Padres still have a loaded farm system, so they can certainly have plenty to offer if they wanted to make a big splash.  But as we've seen, the Padres have been very good about swinging major deals without dealing from their very upper crust (except Patino) of prospects.

9:50
A number of players that had been in my system have been traded away, only to blossom elsewhere. Adolis Garcia, for the most recent example, appeared to be mostly a strikeout artist at the AAA team in Memphis and now shines in Texas, but he's far from alone.. Of course, there have been notable others, even appearing in the postseason. What am I to make of this? Be suspicious? Fire my minor league staff? Revamp player development?
Mark P
9:52
Probably not a great time to bring up that current Cubs folk hero Patrick Wisdom is another former Cards prospect....

The Cardinals themselves made mention of this last offseason, and it's naturally as irritating to them as it is to their fans.  Obviously every team has "ones that got away," and it's a testament to the Cards development system that they have so many good young players that they're still competitive even with some prominent names "getting away.
"
9:53
But some definite questions have to be asked about why the Cards themselves aren't unlocking or maximizing these players' talent.

Would it be possible for a 40-man roster to have more than 14 players on the 10-day DL?  Feels like we're headed there.
