I feel like a couple of teams have already cracked the 15-player threshold.  I know the Mets for sure had 15 guys on the IL, at least briefly.

How old am I? Trick question. I am infinity.
Mark P
9:56
Pujols replacing Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who is not a plot twist I saw coming.

Just came from a college wood bat game and every pitcher threw 90+.  Closer at 98.  Bad gun or does everyone have 90+ in their arsenal?
Mark P
9:58
Velocity is the bread-and-butter of pitching these days.  To some extent it always has been, but high-90s guys used to be rare gems --- now almost every team has multiple guys who can bring the heat, at least in a relief capacity.

If you're wondering why arm injuries seem to be on the rise, well....
Erik Neander
9:59
Should I pursue Richard Rodriguez?
Mark P
9:59
(Neander = Rays front office boss)

A lot of teams could use Rodriguez, Tampa included.  I'm sure Pirates fans will love the idea of another big trade with the Rays!
Eloy
10:00
Am I back before Luis Robert and when?
Mark P
10:01
Eloy's timeline was said to be 4-5 months, so he is projected to be back sometime in August (maybe closer to the end).  Robert's timeline was 12-16 weeks without even any baseball activity, beginning in early May.

So in theory, Eloy should be back sooner, since there's a chance Robert might not make it back at all this season.
jays
10:03
what can the jays do to get over this hump, they seem to be able to hang with the big boys, but havent been able to make that push
Mark P
10:04
They haven't had their full team, what with all the pitching injuries and Springer missing almost the entire season.

Plus, the Rays just seem to have the Blue Jays' number under any circumstance, no matter how good or bad either team is.

Will Severino be back soon enough to save the Yankees ?
Mark P
10:05
Starting pitching isn't the Yankees' problem

A Doctor Who reference?? Well done!

Doctor Who, Cam Jansen.....pfft, who would dare call me uncool with all these hip references?!

Any word on when the Jays might return to Canada?  (Honestly, I'm from Buffalo now in LA).  I hope the Jays stay there all year and make it to the Series...and I can watch them win a title in my home town!
Mark P
10:09
The Canadian government just announced today that the American NHL team who plays Montreal ("or Winnipeg") in the next playoff round will get a travel exemption to play in a modified quarantine.

I would imagine they'll see how this goes, as a dress rehearsal for having US baseball teams making regular trips into Toronto to face the Jays.  There are a lot more issues to cover with the Jays, of course, since they'll be traveling to several cities and not being in any real quarantine, whereas the NHL can more easily control one or two teams.

Braves trade for Mike Y from the giants? Hear me out, mike is on the older side, Giants (while better then I thought) still will have a tough time making the playoffs. Braves need a left hand hitting outfielder with some pop. Braves have a dump truck load of propects.
Mark P
10:10
Doesn't seem like much of a fit.  The Giants will want Yaz for their own playoff push.

what kind of package would the DBacks be seeking for Marte if they go into sell mode? could the Gs pull off something without any of there top 6 or 7 prospects? DBacks farm system is top loaded with OF and pitchers. How about 3 from the following group: Toribio, Wilson, Schmitt, Wyatt, Estrada, Genoves. Maybe even Dubon?
Mark P
10:13
I highly doubt that the D'Backs would move Marte to a division rival, so you can probably count out the Giants.  And if Arizona did pivot and deal Marte, they'd probably wait to do it until after the season so they'd have an even wider market for interested teams.

The D'Backs could justifiably ask for a ton back for Marte, who is controlled through 2024 on an affordable contract.  He'd merit more than the Rays got for Snell, for instance.

On August 1, I am playing for _________________________________.
Mark P
10:16
Looking back to 2019, the Angels, Astros, Phillies, Padres, Dodgers and Braves all reportedly had interest in Boyd's services.  Since the latter three of those teams all have the same front office heads in place, I'd speculatively guess that one of SD, LA and Atlanta might be candidates

Any chance that Bellinger signs a long term extension, even though he's a Boras client?
Mark P
10:17
There's certainly a chance.  The Dodgers have shown they're willing to pay top dollar to retain the guys they feel are legitimately building blocks, and Boras has certainly had his share of big-name clients sign extensions.

Would the Braves trade freeman if they’re 6-8 games out in July?
Mark P
10:20
I would tend to think not
Padres
10:22
We need another bat. Our offense struggles. We haven’t been able to even start our projected lineup once this year. Who is available and in our range?
Mark P
10:24
If you look at the Padres' lineup, they don't really have many "struggling" guys.  The problem is that the players expected to contribute off the bench (Profar, Kim, Caratini to some extent) haven't done much of anything, so when a player gets injured, the Padres don't get much from a fill-in.

So in theory, San Diego could use a multi-position bench guy, if Profar or Kim aren't getting it done.

It also doesn't help that Machado, Hosmer, Myers are all not "struggling," but also not hitting overly well.

Matt Boyd might be pitching for Toledo in August if he keeps giving up runs like in his last 4 starts.
Mark P
10:27
Also a fair point.  The reason Boyd probably wasn't dealt two years ago was because he came back down to earth after a strong start......we could be seeing a repeat.

“Reds don’t have much in the way of prospects”.  Someone introduce Mark to a couple of guys named Green and Lodolo. Mark makes me laugh each week.
Mark P
10:30
In fairness, I should've specified that the Reds don't have a particularly deep system.  Some good names at the top of the list, but I'm not certain the team would deal a Lodolo or a Greene unless they were getting a good player under multiple (and probably more than just two) years of control.
Mark R
10:32
Do you anticipate the Astros being active in the trade market?
Mark P
10:33
I do, but in a moderate way since they're also very close to the luxury tax line.  They *shouldn't* be afraid of exceeding it since they'd only be a two-time payor, but who knows what their ownership is insisting on
Joe Hardy
10:35
Should Angel fans be happy the powers that be had more faith in Adell than Angel fans or should they be upset he wasn’t traded for a middle of the rotation starter.
Mark P
10:36
Questioners in this chat were trying to trade Adell for months.  Since this Angels season might be a lost cause anyway, I'm sure Halos fans are pleased that they still have Adell waiting in the wings
10:38
That's it for me tonight, thanks for all the questions!  Back next weekend with another chat
