Here's the other issue with using Spider Tack or whatever on the baseballs.....it seems like three-quarters (at least?) of pitchers are doing it.  If the umps aren't enforcing the rules and everyone is tacitly agreeing to look the other way, a lot of players probably don't even really see it as cheating.

Ortiz is almost certainly getting in first-ballot.  A-Rod likely not due to the steroid issues.  Schilling came close enough in the last ballot that he'll probably get over the 75% threshold this time, unless he makes more inflammatory statements.

Bonds and Clemens have seemingly stalled out.  Rolen should continue to make gains but he'll probably have to wait at least one more year before getting inducted

I keep seeing articles linking Trevor Story to the A's but Oakland's ownership has never approved the kind of midseason payroll bump that would be necessary ($10-12 MM) to pay his salary. Who will the A's add that they can actually afford?
Mark P
9:36
Story will only have about $6MM remaining in salary by July 30, but you're right, even that might be beyond Oakland's spending capacity.  It's possible they might get the Rockies to kick in some money if the A's send a better prospect back in return.
9:38
Freddy Galvis stands out as a lower-cost shortstop move the A's could make, if Story is too pricey from either a salary standpoint or a trade-return standpoint

Would the Rockies be stupid to consider trading German Marquez?  Seems like for where they play they should absolutely be hoarding their homegrown pitching
Mark P
9:40
While it's true that a pitcher has added value to the Rox if he can perform well at Coors Field, I would lean in favor of a Marquez trade.  The Rockies should probably rebuild and start over.....Marquez is under control through the 2024 season, but do you realistically see Colorado contending before then?  With all the holes on their roster and in that stacked division?

Who do you see us moving when Brujan and Franco come up? Diaz? Wendle? Will they be packaged with prospects for a big piece coming back?
Mark P
9:43
Since it's the Rays, one can't rule out them just keeping everyone to create the single-most versatile roster in baseball history, able to adapt and adjust to any situation (uh, short of replacing Snell with a gassed Nick Anderson in a World Series game).

If Tampa did look to move someone, Brosseau and Diaz seem like the odd men out.

Am I taking the HS SS that is willing to sign for the least amount of money?  Is there really that big of a difference amongst the three?
Mark P
9:46
(Ben C = Ben Cherington, Pirates GM)

I assume you're referring to a recent MLB.com mock draft, which suggested that Marcelo Mayer might be the Pirates' #1.  At this time of year, all sorts of information and purposeful misinformation (from teams, not reporters) is flying around, so it's hard to tell what exactly the Bucs will do.  They might not know themselves yet at this point, but the strategy of stretching your pool money over as many quality prospects as possible isn't a bad idea.

Is Daniels and Woodard are done after this season?
Mark P
9:47
I doubt it.  Texas wasn't expected to contend this season.

Will anyone talk to me at the deadline and if so, about who?
Mark P
9:52
Haniger is the obvious ask.  I assume team will inquire about lots of Mariners (ranging from the more obvious trade candidates to pie-in-the-sky "just doing due diligence" asks on people like Kelenic), but Flexen, Ty France will get attention

How realistic is a bad contract swap of Jason Heyward for David Price at the trade deadline?
Mark P
9:52
Not realistic at all.  Price is more valuable to the Dodgers than Heyward would be

In your personal opinion Marcus Semien, does he resign and stay with Toronto or does some other team make him and offer the Toronto Management can refuse?"
Mark P
9:57
Semien is building a case for a very nice contract this winter.  If I'm a Toronto team that is looking to contend, I definitely want to keep him in the fold going forward, other infield depth notwithstanding.

Is my service time part of the reason the marlins are being so cautious with me?
Mark P

If so, it's a very very small factor compared to the much larger issue that Sanchez can't seem to get healthy.

Could you see Wil Myers being delt in a deadline deal?
Mark P
10:01
Sure, as part of some complicated (maybe multi-team) trade involving several big contracts changing hands.  I wouldn't put such a creative move past Preller and company, he has made such trades in the past.

You think David Ortiz is a first ballot HOF'er despite his early-career ties to PED's?
Mark P
10:03
Yep.  There was more than a little ambiguity about the Mitchell Report, and Ortiz went on to become one of baseball's most beloved figures.

Why isn't cheating (steroids/spider tack etc) grounds for voiding a player's contract? If the contract was negotiated based on an ability the player does not possess, it would seem the player defrauded the team and the fanbase so why force them to be locked into 7-8 year deals for hundreds of millions? Despite the MLBPAs obvious objections, do you think MLB teams will ever be able to add some clause like this?
Mark P
10:05
How did they "defraud the fanbase"?  It isn't their money.

And again, between the PEDs and stuff like Spider Tack, you're talking about voiding contracts for over half the league.  Nobody wants to go down that rabbit hole.

Ketel Marte to Yankees makes sense, no? Yankees need CF help and could use him as insurance/super utility in 2022. DBacks free CF and get a pair (or three) prospects
Mark P
10:07
The D'Backs can justifiably ask for the moon and stars in a Marte trade, so the Yankees would be willing to part with several of their top prospects.
Sorry, would "have" to be willing

10:08
why do teams(like the Pirates) assume every player is a utility player and can play multiple positions well and run out a different batting order every night?
Don’t players(especially young players and baseball players) need a routine and consistent ABs in order to hit in and out of slumps. Or the days of vets like Ben Zobrist and J.Harrison being MLB only utility players over with??
Mark P
10:08
I've made this same argument before....every team is trying to develop multi-positional guys, but not every player is really capable of such a role.

Mark P

At the risk of being hauled away by the Mounties....I'm not a big Rush fan.  But 'Limelight' is probably my favourite song of theirs.
deGrom

DeGrom is a shoe-in for MVP, no other player has a chance, Hell Tatis, the guy in far second place right now, could only manage a double and 5 K against him in 6 ABs
