I'm generally in favor of position players for the MVP, and guys like Acuna, Bryant, and Tatis are having huge seasons.  But admittedly, if deGrom ends up with something ridiculous like an 0.70 ERA, he'lll be hard to ignore as an MVP

St Louis question.  Mediocre hitting, injured starters and mediocre relief.  Add to that, one of the worst walk rates all around.  What do the Cards do at the deadline, short of going on a run that they show no signs of doing?
Mark P
10:13
Since I mentioned the possibility earlier.....maybe selling?  The Cards don't have a ton of obvious rental-player trade candidates, since I highly doubt they'd move Molina/Wainwright unless they asked out, and guys like Kim and Miller have limited value.

Is strength of schedule something that needs to be discussed more in the MLB? It’s a big factor in the NFL (albeit 16 games) but we’re seeing the Angels endure the first few months of top contenders and now seeing them get back to normal competition (and their record reflects that).
Mark P
10:15
I'd like to see a more normalized schedule, since you probably don't need 19 games against a division opponent.  It punishes teams for being in a tough division (and I am admittedly biased on this subject, as a Blue Jays fan).

Who signs me?
Mark P
10:16
Mets fans are already pretty happy with their team, but imagine the joy that would come from Colon returning on a minor league deal

Thinking back to the Toronto Mets trade where Toronto got Dickey -- what was your reaction at the time? Good deal ?  Gave up way too much ?
Mark P
10:19
I was optimistic at the time since the Jays needed rotation help, and Dickey had just won the Cy Young.  But obviously it didn't really work out in the long run.  Dickey ate innings but was only decent rather than a true front-of-the-rotation guy.  Ironically, by the time the Jays did next reach the postseason, Syndergaard was a bigger contributor for the Mets than Dickey was for Toronto

Best album of the 21st century?
Mark P
10:20
Going by the knee-jerk "first albums that came to mind" reaction, I'll say either Icky Thump by the White Stripes or Speakerboxx/Love Below by Outkast
Reds
10:21
Are any of Moose, Suarez or Shogo moveable for just salary relief? They all have salaries on the higher side at positions groups the reds have lots of depth..  None of their contacts are completely terrible but those financial resources could certainly be better utilized in the bullpen for this team..
Mark P
10:22
If you're moving Moose or Suarez, that's kind of a tacit admission that the Reds are maybe going to be undergoing a bigger refresh than just a "sell some spare parts and reload for 2022" deadline strategy.
10:23
I'm not sure what Cincy exactly plans on doing given the rather mixed signals from their front office's moves over the last year, but short of a major collapse in the next month, I think they'd stop short of any huge trades

Does a trade of Alex Mahoah, Jordan Groshans and another mid-tier Blue Jays prospect get it done to land Scherzer? Thanks.
Mark P
10:24
The Jays aren't giving up that much for two months of Scherzer.

What would the WS have to give for Corey Dickerson.?
Mark P
10:26
Probably not all that much.  Dickerson is a FA after the season, he's earning $9.5MM in salary this year.  Marlins would probably take just a decent mid-level prospect (20-30 in Chicago's system, perhaps) and salary relief.

I just want to, for one chat, be able to see the questions y'all have to filter through to witness the chaos of insanity.

Trust me, you do not.

Khrush Davis to the Indians?
Mark P
10:28
There have been several "Khris Davis to this team?" types of suggestions in the chat queue, and I'll say it again, Davis doesn't have much value.  He hasn't hit well in three years, which isn't great for a bat-only player.

It's possible a team might take a flier on him just to see if there's anything left in the tank, but I wouldn't be counting on Davis as a difference-maker in a lineup

Doesn't haniger to the blue jays make a lot of sense?
Mark P
10:31
There isn't really room for him once Springer is healthy.  Gurriel has quietly been hitting very well over the last month, so he is no longer a weak link.  Gurriel/Springer/Grichuk/Teoscar rotating between the three OF spots and the DH is a pretty solid quartet
Free Freddie
10:32
Will the Braves trade Freeman at the deadline? I know he has 10 and 5 rights. The team just doesn’t look as formidable without Ozunas bat.
Mark P
10:33
I don't see them moving Freeman unless he directly asks to be dealt.

10:34
Anyway I trade Trout for young pitching? Urias and Lux for Trout who says no?
Mark P
10:34
I doubt the Angels would trade Trout period, and if they did, they 1000% would not trade him to the Dodgers
Billy Bob
10:35
If Braves are sellers, who do they sell?
Mark P
10:36
With some delicacy, Charlie Morton, since he could very well up and retire if he's dealt to a place that doesn't fit his geographic preferences.  (Or, to be fair, he might not care if it's only for a couple of months and he has a chance at a ring.)
10:37
Chris Martin will get some interest from bullpen-needy teams.  But besides that, the Braves don't have a ton of rental-player types who have health and effective this season (which is part of the reason Atlanta is in this situation)

Matt Boyd to the Yanks for Gleyber Torres ? Are we ready to do it now ?
Mark P
10:39
Looking at Boyd's recent game log, that's a big no on the Yankees' side

What would happen, cosmically, if the Cubs had Wisdom don the tools imo ignorance for even one inning?

And on that note, let's call it for this week's chat.  Thanks for all the questions, back next week!
