Again, the Cubs are another team I don't see selling, since they're right in the thick of the playoff race.

And 2016 was a much different circumstance, since the Cubs aren't going to find another team desperate to break a century-plus World Series drought.  The fact that Torres has indeed gone on to become a solid everyday player with flashes of stardom likely makes rival teams even more wary about dealing a prospect of note for any rental player (especially a closer)

Tigers dfa mozara soon?
Mark P
9:06
Probably.  He isn't bringing anything to the table, and Detroit likely prefers to give that playing time to their younger guys.

Do you agree with the Pirates goin under slot on the #1 overall?
Mark P
9:08
It's not a bad strategy, and like I wrote the other day, the pundits have Mayer near or at the top of their draft boards anyway.  It isn't like the Pirates are reaching for some top 10-15 type guy at #1 overall just to save a few bucks.

What is our top priority at the trade deadline
Mark P
9:11
Everyone can use pitching, and someone like Adam Frazier would be a nice fit in Oakland's roster.

What would it take to get Bryan Reynolds and J.T. Brubaker from the Pirates OR Ketel Marte and Caleb Smith from the Diamondbacks?  Got to make some improvements if they are serious about contending.
Mark P
9:15
The Tribe would have to seriously clean out their farm system to land either Reynolds or Marte, and that's not the type of huge move I see a smaller-payroll team making, since they need those prospects to deliver value on their low salaries.

Brubaker or Smith are somewhat more realistic, but even still, those are young arms with a lot of remaining control, so they'd have big trade price tags

Why is Pirates/Rockies the Monday night game on ESPN tomorrow?
Mark P
9:16
I believe ESPN's contract with MLB stipulates that every team has to be shown at least once or twice on a national broadcast.

Cruz should bring a decent prospect  in my opinion.     He’s simply that good a thumper bat.    He could put a team deep in the playoffs with his bat alone . Most  people will disagree with me , but along with Buxton he’s carried a dismal Twins team.
Mark P
9:18
I don't think anyone would disagree that Cruz has been one of the Twins' few bright spots this year.  The issue with trading Cruz is that he's a DH-only guy, so there is a limited market for trade possibilities.

Do you think Castellanos or Winker is a likelier trade deadline bat for the Giants?
Mark P
9:19
Castellanos is "likelier" in the sense that there's a two percent chance he'd be dealt and a zero percent chance Winker is dealt.  In short, don't expect either to go anywhere.

How about another poll. Who wins the NL west?

Does Arenado opt out?
Mark P
9:26
I'd be pretty surprised if he did.  That's a lot of money to leave on the table, especially in an offseason that might have labor squabbles (or a work stoppage) and with the pandemic's financial impact still lingering over everything

Do the White Sox give Rodon a QO if he stays healthy and continues to pitch well?
Mark P
9:28
I don't see why they wouldn't at least issue one.
John
9:28
Is John Means an almost zero % chance to get traded now with his injury?
Mark P
9:29
Probably, yes.  The current timeline is that Means will return shortly after the All-Star break.

Are the Yankees officially cooked?
Mark P
9:31
Still plenty of season left, but the Yankees need to put together a quality win streak, and soon.  (Or just start beating the Red Sox or Rays.)
9:34
Small Yankees rant here: I know the players are pros, and they know the real problem is that they're a talented roster who has underachieved.

But, it has to be kind of demoralizing to realize that (barring a very creative trade by the front office) major help isn't on the way at the deadline, since the organization isn't going over the luxury tax threshold come hell or high water.  Obviously players have played for teams with much lower payrolls and spending is always a factor, but there's also a disconnect when you're playing for the Yankees and even they're like "sorry, our hands are tied spending-wise."

Is Tellez by himself worth a relief arm? Which Jays prospects are untouchable re trade talks?
Mark P
9:37
Unless they're able to get a premium player with multiple years of control, the Jays won't be moving any of their top-tier guys (Martin, Woods Richardson, Groshans, and obviously not Manoah).  There is maybe a slightly better chance they move Moreno just because they have a lot of catching depth, but I suspect they'd prefer to keep Moreno and move one of the catchers instead.

Beyond that upper crust, however, I can see the Jays being open about moving a player or two or three from the 10-20 range or lower.

Are the marlins buyers or sellers
Ng
9:38
Do the Marlins move one of their good young controllable pitchers for some position player prospects?
Mark P
9:39
My MLBTR teammate Anthony Franco covered these issues in a Marlins piece earlier today: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/06/the-marlins-trade-deadline-outl...

Short recap: don't expect him to move any of the starting pitchers, but they may be open for business on most other positions.
What’s Brujan in Tampa?
9:40
Any idea when I’ll get called up?
Mark P
9:41
I was pretty surprised to see Wander up before Brujan, so now I'm not sure what his timeline might be

This sucks…AGAIN…
Mark P
9:43
No kidding.  Just an awful run of bad luck for a tremendous young pitcher.  One can only hope that after two Achilles tears, he's able to get back onto the field and get his career back on track

At what point does Kansas City give up on H. Dozier?  E. Olivares looks like he is an everyday player…shouldn’t they give him a shot?
Mark P
9:45
I do think Olivares should get more playing time, but KC isn't giving up on Dozier any time soon.  They did just sign him to an extension this spring, after all.
