Ever? I mean, almost every single season has seen the eventual World Series champion add someone at the trade deadline who ended up making a big difference.  It's hard to single out just one.
Blane
9:02
Seager scratched and Cal Raleigh and Donovan Walton replaced in the second inning for triple A Tacoma. Is there a trade about to break?
Mark P
9:02
I think it's likelier that there has been an injury
Matt
9:03
Souza Jr make sense for the Indians?  What could it hurt at this point?
Mark P
9:03
I don't doubt that Souza will catch on with some team on a minors deal, Cleveland is as good a fit as any
Billy Hamilton
9:04
Does my career longevity surprise you? Defense wins championships....?
Mark P
9:05
A player with even one elite skill can last a long time in the big leagues, and Hamilton can both run and play the field exceptionally well
Brandon
9:07
Kind of seems like the Giants should extend Crawford for a couple of more years. Thoughts?
Mark P
9:08
Crawford has openly said he wants to be a Giant for life, and something like a two-year contract would make sense for both sides.  The Giants will have some caution extending a guy in his mid-30s, naturally, but Crawford seems to have genuinely unlocked something
Hobgoblin
9:08
What percentage of the questions you get are ridiculous trade proposals?
Mark P
9:09
Only around 10 percent
Dipoto
9:09
What's your best guess on Dipoto getting an extension with his contract ending at seasons end?
Mark P
9:10
I would imagine Mariners ownership would extend him.  Barring a sudden disagreement over terms or something, it would see the team change direction after a winning (?) season and a lot of good building blocks in place after a rebuild
Wire Fan
9:11
On a scale of 1-10, how silly is it for the Yankees to turn Stanton, an above average defensive corner OF, into a DH only player?
Mark P
9:11
It's not a matter of defense, it's a matter of Stanton not being able to avoid the IL
Kimbrel
9:13
do the As have the pieces to pull it off?
Mark P
9:13
The pieces, yes.  The payroll space, I dunno
Angel playoffs
9:14
Like 16% now, should they sell have pieces to move?
Mark P
9:15
I mentioned this in that Angels post earlier tonight....they're in kind of a gray area because of Trout, Upton, Rendon all being out.  I can see them still looking to buy under the assumption that those three will help the lineup
But I also don't see Minasian going overboard to pick up pieces for a team that is still in the 16% range
Bryce
9:17
Can you see the White Sox getting someone like a Matt Carpenter, due to the Cardinals connection?
Mark P
9:18
Carpenter isn't exactly an upgrade at this point in his career
Padres
9:20
Bryant trade and extension to bring him back to his usd roots.  Play all over this year, replace Pham in left next year.  What would it cost the padres?
Mark P
9:21
Bryant to the Padres isn't out of the question, but a midseason extension absolutely isn't happening.  It would be stunning to see a Scott Boras client make that kind of deal so close to free agency
Bort
9:22
Which teams not currently in playoff spots do you see buying at the deadline?
Mark P
9:23
Are you talking to me or to my son, who is also named Bort?
Trevor Story
9:25
Who is the White Sox top minor-league pitching prospect? Asking for a friend.
Mark P
9:25
As per MLB Pipeline, that would be righty Jared Kelley, currently in rookie ball and projected to arrive in the bigs by 2023......right when the Rockies might finally admit they need to rebuild.
Boo Jays
9:27
Another loss to the Rays today. Do we dump the players on 1 year deals to reload for next year?  Semien etc?
Mark P
9:27
Barring a big losing streak between now and the deadline, I can't see the Jays going into sell mode
9:28
They (not unreasonably) must believe that with even adequate relief pitching, they'd be in a playoff spot right now.
AllStarGame
9:29
Sure seems like lotsa players opted out of it this year
Mark P
9:29
Given all the injuries this season and the still-lingering pandemic weirdness hanging over baseball, I can't really blame players for preferring a few days off
Ivan
9:30
Acuna's injury: does this make ATL re-tool for next year, or will they ignore and continue treading .500?
Alex Anthopoulos
9:30
Earlier, you suggested that perhaps I should sell if Acuna is out for an extended period of time. Assuming we're out of the playoff race by July 30, who should I trade? What should I try to get in return?
Mark P
9:32
Any of the impending free agents (Smyly, d'Arnaud, Martin, Greene, the Panda) for whatever you might be able to get for any of them.  Morton is a maybe though he's a tricky case since he's picky about where he plays and could opt to just retire.  The boldest move would be Freeman, but he has 10-5 rights and can veto trades, plus I have doubts the Bravs would want to move him
Jed
9:33
challenge trade. Kimbrel for McKenzie Gore. Who says no?
Mark P
9:33
Padres.  If they're willing to move Gore, they can get a much more valuable asset back than a (very good) reliever
NScotia14
9:34
So Everyone is talking about the impact the sticky substance has had on Gerrit Cole. He has 10 strikeouts in 7 innings tonight
Mark P
9:34
Not that Cole might not have been mentally impacted by all the controversy, or that it wasn't weighing on his mind.
