But keep in mind, his two bad outings were against two really good teams in the Red Sox and Mets (plus that Mets game was a delayed doubleheader game, so Cole's routine was thrown off)
Kimbrel
9:38
Are Cubs looking for highest ceiling prospects or near mlb ready players?
Mark P
9:39
I think they're open to both at this point, maybe not really specifying one over the other.  What type of return they land for Kimbrel might impact what they target in other trades for Bryant, Contreras, etc.

9:40
Should Cedric Mullins start over the rest, in place of Trout?
Mark P
9:41
In terms of pure numbers this season, sure.  But a lot of factors undoubtedly go through the managers' minds when they're deciding on replacement starters
9:42
btw, Mullins is tied for sixth in all of baseball in fWAR.  Just a great year for him
St. Louis Browns
9:43
What will we do at the deadline?
Mark P
9:43
Hang onto that Vern Stephens, he's a keeper
Oh My

The Rockies aren't having ANY trade talks for another week?? What is going on over there?
Rocco rox
9:43
How many Rockies get traded? I say Story, Gray, Cron, Givens and maybe Bard
Mark P
9:46
All of those players would make sense to be moved, and could be moved already if the Rockies front office wasn't inexplicably taking a break from trade talks.

Every front office is focused on the draft right now, and understandably so.....but not ONLY focused on the draft.  It's frankly kind of embarrassing that the Rockies front office is so understaffed that they can't do two things at once.

Is it too early to be thinking about signing Gausman long term?
Mark P
9:48
(Farhan Zaidi = Giants president of baseball ops)

The two sides had some extension talks last fall around the time Gausman accepted the qualifying offer, and I wonder if the Giants are kicking themselves for not getting him locked up then.  Gausman's price tag is now exponentially higher.
Angels
9:48
What would it take for the halos to get Hendricks? Seems like a good fit for them and a feasible target given their farm and payroll. Plus he’s a so cal native and they drafted him in 08
Mark P
9:50
I realize I joke about Jo Adell trades a lot in these chats, but this might be a scenario where the Angels could be willing to move Adell.  Controllable pitcher, not overly expensive, strong results, ties to Maddon....there's a lot to like as a fit.

Who do you think will be the #1 pick in the draft?
Mark P
9:51
Marcelo Mayer seemed like the consensus pick a couple of weeks ago, but the most recent round of mock drafts had Lawlor or Henry Davis as candidates to perhaps be 1-1 instead.
9:52
I'd still lean towards Mayer based on everything I've read, but there is rather a surprising lack of certainty less than 24 hours until the draft

Will we stick with our GM or pick a POBO?
Mark P
9:55
I haven't heard anything negative about Zack Scott's job performance, so I have to imagine he's the favorite to just get the full-time GM job next year.  It depends on Alderson's future plans as well, but my money would be on Scott retaining the GM role

Have you seen the movie/documentary "Fastball"? Absolutely phenomenal stuff
Mark P
9:56
Big fan of that movie, I highly recommend it
The Jerk

Any rumblings about the Phillies listening to offers for Wheeler?
Mark P
9:58
There were some rumors about it last offseason, until the owner firmly ruled out a Wheeler trade.  I doubt much has changed since, as I don't see Dave Dombrowski retooling in mid-stream
Cards
9:59
With Carlos Martinez's injury and prolonged absence do you see us trying to add a starter at the deadline now?
Mark P
10:00
I can see the Cards just trying to add pitching in the form of some warm bodies who can eat innings, rather than any sort of major "deadline add."  If anything, St. Louis looks like they could or should be sellers
Moneyball
10:00
I never understood why moving Hatteberg to 1B was a major plot point. Moving veteran players to 1B happens all the time. Am I missing something or is Hollywood dumb?
Mark P
10:01
Moneyball was a good movie, but let's be honest, the "story of the Athletics" more or less ignored the fact that they had Tejada and one of the league's best pitching staffs.
10:02
Some things had to be simplified for the sake of a movie narrative, but c'mon, it's not like screenwriting is hard.  Tell him, Sorks.

Aaron Sorkin: It's incredibly hard.

Well, anything worth doing is.

Why do the pirates feel the need to trade Frazier? Why not give him a contract and keep him?
Mark P
10:05
Frazier is under contract through 2022, and I think it's fair to say the Pirates won't be contenders by next year.  Will they contend by 2023?  2024?  Given the scope of their rebuild, I doubt it.

So by this point, an extension would require that Frazier still be productive into a 2025 season, when he'll be 33 years old
10:06
Four years is a long time, and I can understand why the Bucs would want to move him now.  I'm not sure anyone on the Pittsburgh roster apart from Hayes will be part of the 'next winning Pirates team.

If a player makes an MLB debut and then is optioned back to the minors, is their MLB service clock still accruing time?
Mark P
10:07
Nope.  But if they're on the major league injured list, they do accumulate service time

10:09
Imagine Charlie Morton pitching for the St Louis Cardinals if the Braves decide to trade some of their players.
Mark P
10:09
I'd guess Morton would want to join a team that is more directly in contention.  Actually, a Morton trade back to Tampa would be pretty fun.

Gausman, Wood and DeSclafani all are on 1 year deals + Cueto has a team option.  Crystal ball into what Farhan will do?
