I'm Canadian, so I'm obligated by law to watch hockey.  But that obligation for me ends very early in the spring, since I'm a Maple Leafs fan.

G'evening! Now that Lindor is out for weeks, you think Mets will try to ain for Javy Baez instead of Bryant?

Jo Adell and Chris Rodriguez for Jose Berrios. Who says no?
Mark P
8:35
Jo Adell trade proposals have almost become a running gag in these chats.....but this one is pretty good.  I think the Angels are more likely to say no, just because Berrios is only locked up through 2022

Scherzer won't go without an extension. Can teams negotiate an extension as part of the deal?
Mark P
8:37
If given permission by the Nats, sure.  And in such a scenario, the Nats wouldn't have much choice but to give permission in order to accommodate a trade.

But that's another complication....it isn't easy to negotiate contract extensions.  Especially when you're dealing on a short window of time before the deadline and when Scherzer's contract is especially complicated due to all the deferred money.

Phillies have a pretty weak farm, but their recent hotstreak and the subpar division makes me think they'll be looking to buy at the deadline. What trade pieces do they have?
Mark P
8:41
Hot take: the Phillies' biggest bargaining chip might be money.  It would be quite a turnaround from a team that looked like they might be cutting costs eight months ago, but those financial worries seems to have somewhat lessened now that fans are back in the ballpark.

The Phils can take on a big contract of a rental player or two and go over the luxury tax threshold this year, paying the first-timer rate. Those rentals leave in the offseason, and with the other money coming off the books, the Phils can duck back under the tax limit if they so choose.

Michael King and Albert Abreu for Brandon Marsh.  Who hangs up?
Mark P
8:42
The Angels, without much thought

What are the chances Padres get Gallo & Gibson and Davies & Kimbrel?
Mark P
8:44
It's fun that isn't TOTALLY out of the realm of possibility that Preller might go bonkers with multiple blockbusters.

Davies hasn't been anything special this year, so he doesn't offer much to SD beyond familiarity.

Would Graveman net the Mariners a SP or OF to help them make a push this year? He's tailed off a little since coming off the COVID-IL, and Paul Sewald has started vulturing some of his appearances in the ninth lately.
Mark P
8:49
As a relatively minor upgrade, sure.  For the same reasons you mentioned, I'm not sure if teams will be willing to move anything really substantive for Graveman.

When do the Red Sox say enough is enough and DFA Marwin? .285 OBP and a .296 SLG. I feel like they have enough versatility without him

It looks like Arroyo just got injured in tonight's game, so the Sox might need to hang onto their utility options yet

Bucks in 6?

Seems that way.  The Suns seem like they're running out of answers.

Do you think the Royals will bring up Witt and Pratto by end of season since they are now in triple a?
Mark P
8:52
Probably

Someone's standing above you holding a gallon jar of mustard. You have to be right or they're going to pour that jar of mustard on your head: Which reporter breaks the biggest trade scoop of the next 2 weeks?

Plot twist.....I love mustard.

A.J. Hinch is looking like a fantastic hire. Tigers are playing inspired baseball. Is this going to be the off-season where Chris Illicit opens his wallet?
Mark P
8:56
"Chris Illicit" is an amazing typo.

Since the first week of May, the Tigers have quietly posted a winning record.  With a nod to the poor division helping Detroit to this record, the rebuild looks like it's starting to bear some fruit, so I could definitely see the team start to add some pieces (if maybe not big-ticket players) this winter

I've heard that Anthony Santander, John Means and Tanner Scott wanna play for the Indians.  What kind of package would the Tribe have to send Baltimore to get a deal done for that trio?
Mark P
8:59
For ALL of them?  We're getting into "arm and a leg" territory here, to the point where the price is too high for Cleveland to agree

CBA

After years of "lost 2022" hearing more optimism about games played next year. Any idea where that's coming from and does it seem legit?
Mark P
9:02
Manfred and Clark have both made public statements about how they're aware of how damaging a work stoppage would be, and apparently the MLBPA and the league have been having some quiet talks already.

I would love to believe that cooler heads can prevail and that they can work out a satisfactory CBA that both sides can live with.

Sorry we have caused you to suffer for many years(not really sorry though)

That's ok, that camera shot of Marchand crying after the Bruins blew Game 7 against St. Louis made up for a lot.

You think ppl (the outspoken ones at least) turn on Marsh as quickly as they have on Adell if he flounders during his debut? Long-term, do you prefer either personally? Were ppl as down on Trout after his poor debut? I don’t really remember.
Mark P
9:04
Fans expect too much from prospects in general. The same "that's IT??" backlash happened when Trout didn't immediately catch fire in late 2011.
Taylor Rogers
9:04
What does a realistic return look like for me, if Falvey and Levine decide to move on?
Mark P
9:05
An MLB-ready type of young player who can help the Twins as early as 2022.  Such a player can be the centerpiece, and maybe another minor lottery ticket type of prospect or two included within the package
Mega trades
9:06
The chances of Baez or Rizzo signing an extension in the next 2 weeks is under 5% yeah?
Mark P
9:06
Maybe a touch higher than that, but you're right, it's a real longshot.
