If Atlanta did decide to sell, Tampa is on what might be a short list of options for Morton.  He can always play the "I can just retire" card if the Braves moved him to a team and location that didn't appeal to him.

With less than $70 million on the books for next season will my beloved Cubs spend this offseason?
Mark P
9:11
The Cubs will be a fascinating team to watch this offseason.  If all the old core guys do leave in free agency or get traded in the next two weeks, the team will have a pretty blank canvas.  They might opt for another rebuild/reload year, or they could decide to make a bigger push to develop the next winning core.
9:12
I guess another big rebuild can't be entirely ruled out, but that would go over very poorly with Chicago fans

Not a thin crust guy and not a Chicago style fan. Wait…you don’t like pizza
Mark P

I love pizza!  Just with normal crust.

Will starling marte be dealt before the trade deadline. I’ve heard negotiations with the Marlins have stalled out. Is he a realistic option for the Phillies?
Mark P
9:15
Marte would be a good option if the Phils did opt for the "screw it, let's just pay the tax" route.

But I also kind of wonder if Marte's extension might still happen.  As per the latest report (linked below), he wants $50MM or three or four years, and the Marlins countered with three years/$30MM.  That's not as big of a gap as it might seem....really just $2.5MM in average annual value per year, going by the 4/$50MM breakdown.  There might yet be some more middle ground to be found between Marte's camp and the Marlins, if talks continue.

with mariners only 2.5 out of wild card and athletics struggling, do you think the mariners should offer a mid tier prospect and try and get nelson cruz back for the stretch run?
Mark P
9:16
A Cruz return to Seattle would be a lot of fun, and since there are only so many places a DH-only player can land, the Mariners should be making some calls to Minnesota

Is pache enough to get Rodriguez from Pittsburgh
Mark P
9:17
More that enough, which is why there's no way the Braves would make that deal
Ryan
9:18
who is a potential player that may get traded nobody expects?
Mark P
9:19
Purely speculative on my part, and maybe a complete misfire since the Cardinals are reportedly not planning to make any major deadline moves.

But....I kind of wonder if they'd be open to trading Alex Reyes now that his value is at its highest in years

Am I the only one who thinks Anthony Rizzo wouldn’t be much of an addiction for the Red Sox? I know production from 1B has been atrocious but does Rizzo magically make the lineup that better?
Mark P
9:21
Rizzo is having a bit of a down year by his standards, but yeah, he would still be a major upgrade.  Plus you can't rule out Rizzo catching fire on a new team, now that he's free of all the trade speculation.

Boston is in first place despite just about the worst first base production in the league.  Turning that negative into any kind of a positive is a big win for the Red Sox

Detroit - while it has its holes - is quietly playing very well lately. What do they do to take the jump for a competitive 2022 season?
Mark P
9:24
Get at least one veteran starting pitcher who can eat innings, and get a couple of veteran bats to help upgrade that lineup.
Contreras
9:25
Chances that the Cubs target an MLB-ready catcher for leverage in Contreras extension talks
Mark P
9:25
Quite high
If they landed such a catcher, that might make the Cubs more likely to move Contreras in a later deadline deal

The Ricketts still owe nearly $70M to Kris Bryant  (~$10m for balance ‘21) & Jason Heyward (~$60 million through ‘23).  Which club could I get to take those two together while sending me in return  2-3 ‘lottery ticket’ type prospects ?
Mark P
9:28
Just because I mentioned them earlier, the Giants have a lot of money coming off the books.  But I highly doubt they'd want to immediately fill in that open payroll space with Heyward, who is more or less a sunk cost by this point.

If the Cubs were desperate to move Heyward, the likelier route would be to pair him with a younger, more inexpensive player

Yadi gets extention before end of year??  Waino get one too??  And are they sellers or sitting on there hands again
Mark P
9:30
Locking up either or both of those two franchise icons for another season would be some minor consolation for St. Louis fans heading into 2022.  But keep in mind, the Cards were happy to wait until deep into the offseason before signing Molina and Wainwright last year, so they probably feel like there isn't a ton of urgency
Victor
9:31
What kind of prospect(s) would Starling Marte get the Marlins? A top 25?
Mark P
9:31
Nowhere close to that, he's only under control through this season
Nelson Cruz
9:31
How many more seasons do I have left in my bat?
Mark P
9:32
I've given up trying to guess when Nelson Cruz might finally start slowing down at the plate. He might hit until he's 50

I know they won’t do it…but if Cleveland put Jose Ramirez in the market, would Tampa part with Baz as a centerpiece?
Mark P
9:34
If Cleveland was willing to accept a trade package that had only Baz as the centerpiece, the Rays would make that move pretty quickly.  But, the Tribe would ask for way more than that for Ramirez, who is one of the most valuable players in baseball (both in terms of talent and contract).  They could realistically ask for Wander.
Royal Blues
9:34
Time to deal Carlos Santana and Merrifield
Mark P
9:35
I don't see Merrifield being dealt, since the Royals still likely feel like they can contend by 2023 (the last option year of his contract).

Santana seems like a viable trade candidate, however.

Hello Mr. Preller, it’s Ben out in Pittsburgh. What would it take to get MacKenzie Gore off your hands?
Mark P
9:37
"Ben?  But....you said your name was Chen??  I CANNOT TRUST YOU."

/hangs up phone
9:38
Anyway, Gore has had some blister problems and been hit hard in Triple-A this year.  So his stock is slightly lower than it was at the start of the year....but the Padres would still want Bryan Reynolds

News flash- Dodger catcher on the trade market not Ruiz, but Smith. Who else would be needed to pry away a good starter?
Mark P
9:40
I don't see the Dodgers making such a sea change at catcher in the middle of a pennant race
Ross A.
9:41
The Blue Jays internally value Moreno as their top prospect, no way is he getting traded.
Mark P
9:42
Oh, I agree that it isn't super likely that Moreno is dealt, but I'm just saying that Toronto's catcher depth makes it slightly more likely with them than another team that didn't have other options
