Who is most appealing as a trade chip if the Reds decide to sell?  I would have said Castellanos a few days ago, but the injury changes things.
Mark P
10:57
Guys like Winker or Castillo wouldn't be moved.  Maybe Sonny Gray, who is controlled through 2022?  I'm not sure I actually see the Reds trading him, but he is a somewhat realistic potential trade chip.
TK
10:58
Indians move Cesar, hedges(if possible) Bryan shaw and wittgren?
Mark P
10:59
These all seem like plausible moves.  Cleveland isn't going to have a big selloff by any means, but moving a couple of their own rental guys is very feasible and even probable
Heinie Manush

Semien to be dealt? To whom?
Mark P
11:00
I doubt the Jays will suddenly turn to selling within the next week, especially not for a big-ticket guy like Semien.

My guess is that Toronto has designs on re-signing him this winter.  Or, if not, keeping him for the full season allows the team to recoup a draft pick via the qualifying offer
Mark P
11:03
If you we the gm of the teams caught in the middle (Nats, Phils, Red, Yanks, Seattle) which way would you go at the deadline?
Mark P
11:04
Mariners and Phillies = definitely buy
Reds and Yankees = strategic buys
Nats = sell
Ricky Bobby
11:05
Could Nats get a top 100 prospect for Kyle Schwarber? The guy could be a game changing LH bat come postseason.
Mark P
11:06
Schwarber took batting practice on the field the other day, so he looks to be close-ish to a rehab assignment.  If another team is confident that he's healthy, I could potentially see them making a pretty strong offer for Schwarber.  Someone in the 80-100 range, and probably a team with a deep enough farm system that they could spare such a good prospect on a rental bat
Joey Bart
11:08
Looking more and more like Gerald will be staying a at the very least one more season with the Gigantes as primary Catcher. Where does this leave me in the next few days? Am I as good as traded or will I be learning a new position let’s say 1B
Mark P
11:09
I suspect the Giants would indeed be open to moving Bart for a good and controllable player, but it would have to be a very special circumstance.  Bart is still an elite prospect.
Braves

What's that Freddie Freeman contract extension look like? 6/145-155???
Mark P
11:12
Goldschmidt got five/$130MM, so I'd think Freeman would want to beat him in average annual value.
NY Giveaway
11:14
As a Yankee fan, am I wrong to want them to just sell and start fresh next year under the tax? What contracts are tradable?
Mark P
11:16
Green, maybe Taillon or even Montgomery.  If teams are interested in Danny Duffy despite his injury, maybe someone would take a flier on Kluber?
This is the other issue in the Yankees being sellers....they don't have a ton of obvious trade candidates
Anthony Rizzo
11:16
Does Rizzo have 10/5 rights?
Mark P
11:17
He doesn't.  He entered the season with just shy of nine years of service time
Jose Berrios
11:18
Which jersey am I wearing in my next start?
Mark P
11:18
Twins.  I think Berrios stays put
Connor
11:19
Do you think it makes sense for the Phillies to go for it? Mets are more talented team on paper and the Phillies farm system is already bad enough before making a trade
Mark P
11:19
It's only a four-game deficit, and by this point, I wouldn't be surprised by anything in the NL East.
Anthony Rizzo
11:20
Man, I would look good in the Red Sox lineup, wouldn't I?
Mark P
11:21
Not to be a total Debbie Downer, but I will point out that Rizzo has been more solid (107 OPS+) than great since the start of the 2020 season.

But, since the Sox have gotten next to nothing from first base this year, even "solid" is a huge upgrade
Ric
11:21
Who might the Dodgers need to trade in order to procure the services of Danny Duffy?
Mark P
11:22
Given that he's injured, I'd expect not a ton?  That said, if all three NL West teams are interested, the Royals should definitely try to leverage as much as they can get (assuming Duffy signs off on a deal with his 10-5 rights)
Phillies overrated?
11:23
Why are the Phillies going for it? They have been outscored by their own opponents by a pretty wide margin. Good teams outscore their opponents and don't get outscored. Why does anyone think this team is that good? Their production implis they should have a losing record.
Mark P
11:24
It is true that the Phillies have a -23 run differential.  But they're only four games behind the Mets, who have....a +12 run differential.

And one only needs to look at the poor Marlins (+1) to know that run differential isn't everything
Natitude
11:25
Any chance that Mad Max was scratched from his recent start in order to protect maximum health and trade value in the market?
Mark P
11:25
The Nats aren't going to let a pitcher throw if he's got some nagging injury, so I doubt the calendar had much to do with the decision to scratch Scherzer from his start
Buxton
11:27
Where am I goin?
Mark P
11:28
Probably nowhere, given the injury.  But this offseason, I can see the Twins making a deal
Guest
11:29
Sonny gray to Dodgers for Ruiz   That a fair deal?
Mark P
11:30
Ruiz is a good headliner for a trade package, certainly.
11:32
Sorry for the delays, back into the chat!
Mark P
11:34
Does Merrifield get better or worse if he changes ballparks? I love the guy but I’m worried his hitting approach won’t transfer to a smaller park.
Mark P
11:34
There isn't much of a dropoff between his career home/road splits, so I don't think that's a huge concern
Greene
11:35
Is there any excuse for the Mariners considering themselves buyers?  They are obviously overachieving in that they are vastly outperforming their true talent and expected win-loss record.  Why try to buy at the deadline in pursuit of a playoff run that is just going to fail?
Mark P
11:35
Because it's fun to try?  Because they haven't made the playoffs in almost 20 years?  Because run differential notwithstanding, they're only 1.5 game out of the wild card?
