If the Phillies were to trade for a center fielder, who would you say is the best target for them? Buxton, Bryant, Marte, or someone else?
Mark P
11:37
I would go with Marte, because he isn't hurt and because he's an actual center fielder.  Bryant's ability to play CF is admirable, but he isn't an ideal choice for an everyday capacity
Anthony
11:38
Do you expect deadline day to be more or less active than past deadlines?
Mark P
11:38
I'd guess busier than last year
John
11:40
Rutschman has been on fire in Bowie. Chances he gets the call to Baltimore this year?
Mark P
11:40
Maybe, but I suspect the O's will wait until next season to start his service clock
Sam
11:41
Have any ideas on an under the radar team that might surprise us and buy at the deadline?
Mark P
11:43
It depends on how big a "buy" we're talking about, but...Detroit?  The Tigers have quietly been playing well for the majority of the season, to the point that they have to be feeling pretty optimistic about 2022.

They've got a ton of payroll space open for next year, so wouldn't it be fun to see them take on some big contract in order to acquire another more tangible asset from a team looking to cut payroll?
Zach
11:43
With mookie betts and bellinger injuries do the Dodgers consider Joey Gallo?
Mark P
11:45
I can't rule the Dodgers out on anything, and Gallo would make some sense.  It would create an outfield logjam for 2022, but "too much talent" has never been an issue for that team
Jake
11:48
Is Scott Barlow being mentioned? The guy is dominate and the Royals just aren’t competing for awhile in that division. They could get a haul for him like the Reds farm system
Mark P
11:48
Barlow would indeed get a really nice return in a trade. But....not competing for a while?  The AL Central isn't exactly great right now.

11:50
Do the Astros have the pieces to complete a trade for a Kimbrel or  Hand?   Is the luxury tax still a major factor for them?
Mark P
11:51
The GM has said that the tax isn't an impenetrable obstacle, but I'm sure it's still some kind of a factor.  The Astros won't exceed the tax line for just anyone.

Thought on the new Guardians name/logo?
Mark P
11:52
I like the name, the logo....needs some work
Alex
11:53
Any talk of Judge maybe being moved? Yankees would be prudent to shop him around while he still has a year+ of control left. Doubt they want to give him a long-term contract anyway.
Mark P
11:55
NYY fans are already mad enough at the team, and now you want Judge traded??

In all seriousness, I don't think the idea is totally far-fetched.  The Yankees generally don't do contract extensions as a rule, and there are enough injury/age red flags with Judge that I'm not sure they'd make an exception in his case.

This all being said, they're not moving him at this deadline.  And, once they're back under the tax line this winter, they should be in full "go for it in 2022" mode and will want Judge on the roster

Angels pay again?
11:56
Will the Angels be able to afford to keep Ohtani? It would be a shame to lose him because of what we paid other guys.
Mark P
11:57
I have to imagine the Angels have future funds earmarked for whatever enormous extension it'll require to retain Ohtani
Joshua
11:57
Josh Harrison to the White Sox for.......?
Mark P
11:58
Chicago fans might be disappointed over not getting a bigger name, but Harrison would be a nice low-key get.

Pedro Leon just removed from the Skeeters game in the 8th…trade?
*** Monday, July 26 ***
Mark P
12:00
I love deadline season, when any prospect being removed from a game leads to instant buzz!

I certainly hope it's a trade or something innocuous, and not an injury.  Leon, btw, is Houston's #2 ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline

Not trying to be rude but how come none of my comments/questions are getting through? Is there something I’m doing wrong?
Mark P
12:01
There are almost 1200 readers in the chat right now, which I find very cool this late/early on a Sunday night/technically Monday morning.  Unfortunately, a lot of questions will inevitably go unanswered!
Mad Max to Beantown
12:02
Mad Max for Bobby Dalbec, Jeter Downs, and B level prospects. Who says no?
Mark P
12:03
This one is interesting.  Downs has not played well this year, which might be just enough to get the Nats to hesitate
Papa Cohen
12:05
Scherzer to Mets, how much would I have to give up to get him?
Mark P
12:05
If the Nats do trade Scherzer, I strongly doubt they'll do it within the division

who would be better Duffy, or Kim?
Mark P

Kim is healthy, so he's my default choice

Do you have any idea what the story is for Story? Haven’t heard much lately.
Mark P
12:09
I think there is a legitimate chance he actually isn't traded.
12:10
Unless the Rockies are just putting up a big public smokescreen, I think there's some truth to Bill Schmidt (the interim GM) saying they have a high price tag for him, and if nobody meets it, the Rox are perfectly happy keeping Story
