This was a team that really could've used Nelson Cruz.
Alex
12:11
Did the Nelson Cruz trade essentially set the market for Gallo? I find it hard to imagine that even with his extra year of control, teams are going to pay much of a premium vs. what the Rays had to cough up given his low BA profile and far less consistent production.
Mark P
12:12
The Rangers will get more for Gallo since he's younger, and has infinitely more defensive value.

Over/under 2.5 of Kimbrel, Hendricks, Contreras, Baez, Bryant, Rizzo traded?
Mark P
12:13
Bryant and Kimbrel seem gone.....I'm just barely wary enough on Baez that I'll go with the under

What does a realistic extension look like for buxton?
Mark P
12:15
That's the problem, Buxton is a really difficult player to evaluate.  So many injuries, so much inconsistency, yet he looks like an absolute superstar when he's fully on.

French Toast or Pancakes?
Mark P
12:15
Pancakes, hands down

Can you please put aside your east coast bias and talk about the Astros? What do you expect them to do?
Mark P
12:17
I start a chat this late on a Sunday night and am accused of an east coast bias?

Mostly pitching for the Astros.  Their lineup seems pretty set, but maybe one more outfielder (not a star like Marte necessarily, but a good complementary guy).  If tonight's news is any hint, they might trade Pedro Leon!

Why don’t buyers make their best offer sooner (say over the AS break) and get a couple of extra weeks if the guy they’re trading for?  Always seems like these things come down to the buzzer (CC to the Brewers in 08 being the rare exception)
Mark P
12:19
Because the teams doing the selling usually like to wait to see if an even better offer can be found.  Depends on the situation, however.  It seems like the Rays went hard after Cruz "early" before the deadline because they thought the Padres (of all teams) might outbid them
Pizza
12:19
There seems to be some controversy regarding your stance on pizza from previous chats. Can you clarify if you don’t like deep dish or thin crust then what’s left?!
Mark P
12:19
"Forget all this trade deadline garbage, let's get down to the REAL hot topics of the day!"

I just like normal crust.

Daniel Hudson and Brad Hand for Gavin Lux?
Mark P
12:20
Zero chance the Dodgers trade Lux for two rental relievers

Kelenic and Rodriguez get a conversation started with Indians for Jose?
Mark P
12:22
That would definitely do it, but the Mariners are definitely not making that deal
Vince
12:22
There seems to be some rumbling about the Padres attempting to trade Hosmer. What would it take to get something like that done?
Mark P
12:24
He has a partial no-trade clause, so that's one obstacle.  It would also need to be some kind of bad contract swap, and San Diego would likely have to kick in a couple of good prospects (depending on the size and nature of the contract coming back)

For Marlins fans that might be once again saddened to see good players go (Marte, Aguilar, Rojas), can you assess how much healthier the franchise's future is compared to 2-3 years ago?
Mark P
12:26
Jeffrey Loria is no longer involved, so that already counts as a big win for the Marlins and their fans.  The organization has put together a nice core of pitchers, though they still need to get some more on the position player side.  Miami isn't "that" far away in my view since they already have the hard(er) part accounted for, in having all that pitching
Bloom

How do I help the team without going over the cap? Who will have to go?
Mark P
12:27
A first-time luxury tax penalty should 1000 percent not be a consideration for a World Series contender

Tauchman, love the guy, but his struggles of late are discouraging. How much more leash do you think he has?
Mark P
12:29
The Giants seem loath to drop a guy who's out of options, but I have to imagine Tauchman will be gone once Longoria, La Stella, and the Brandons get back.

Do the White Sox have the prospect capital to make a move?  Could they possibly consider trading Andrew Vaughn, now that Eloy and Robert are close to returning?  Trading him could solve a lot of problems.
Mark P
12:30
There is no way Vaughn (of all people) would be traded

German Marquez to the Angels for…..?
Mark P

The Rockies have been adamant that Marquez isn't being dealt

Do the Rays Trade Brujan and Walls?
Mark P
12:36
It would be interesting if their callups were essentially extended auditions for potential trade suitors, but I don't think the Rays would move either (especially Brujan) quite this soon, unless a real special trade opportunity came along
12:37
Folks, my internet connection is getting a little dodgy, so I'm going to call it a night for this chat.  Thanks for the flood of questions despite the late start, and we'll be back next weekend with a bunch of post-deadline analysis
