As we've seen over the last couple of years, teams can emerge as surprise suitors for a player even if they have someone at that position.  The incumbent player can be moved elsewhere on the diamond, or even the new player could be used at another position (or positions).

Off the top of my head, the Astros, Angels, Yankees, Tigers, Blue Jays, Nationals, Phillies, Cardinals, and maybe the Cubs all look like reasonably viable landing spots for Correa.  Other teams like the A's need a shortstop but they won't be able to meet his big asking price

With Manfred committing to another FOD game, what do you think of a White Sox/Giants matchup, since those were the two teams who featured most prominently in the film (Graham being a NY Giant)
Mark P
9:32
I'd be down for that.  Except any Giants player who leaves the playing field has to first save a kid from choking.

Thoughts on Michael Lorenzen's upcoming FA? Does someone give him a shot to start?
Mark P
9:34
There's no harm in stretching him out during Spring Training just to see, since the fallback plan of moving him back to the bullpen is always there.

But such a team who signs Lorenzen should have this scenario in mind from day one, and should be looking at Lorenzen as kind of a "sixth starter."  As opposed to a guy being relied on to fill a rotation spot from day one

what's the plan for cano next year?
Mark P
9:37
Right now, it seems like the plan would be just to bring him back and give him regular ABs at second base.  The Mets would be greatly helped if the NL adopted the DH, to open up another lineup spot for all these players

Does Wainwright have a shot at Cy Young?
Mark P
9:40
DeGrom's injuries have thrown the NL Cy race into flux, but I think Wainwright will still fall behind a few other names.

But, only a few.  Wainwright has had a quietly excellent year.

Dark horse to sign Marte? He’d be an upgrade over Robles
Mark P
9:42
Marte makes a lot of sense in Washington.  I suspect the Nats are looking to reload pretty quickly rather than undergo any kind of a rebuild, since they'll want to capitalize on Soto's prime
Luis Severino
9:43
I must be in now or never territory for salvaging my career, right? You get to two-plus years of major sidelining from action and it is safe to say that it’s at least a fair question to ask, right? Brian Cashman must be thinking it too, I’d imagine.
Mark P
9:45
Severino is still under contract through 2022 and NYY has a club option on his services for 2023 ($15MM, $2.75MM buyout).  So there's still time for Severino to finally get healthy and even get that option picked up, if he has a good 2022 season.

But overall, you're not wrong.  Severino has barely pitched over almost three full seasons now.

How much influence do you think an owner has on baseball ops? I’m thinking of a team like the Rockies. They must have plenty of smart people who know they need to take a different direction but are frustrated and being blocked by either the owner or pres of ops or some other person above them. Or do you think the majority of that group really feels that’s the best way to go about things?
Mark P
9:49
It isn't surprising that most of the game's successful teams have owners who generally let the front office do their jobs.

I've given up figuring out how the Rockies operate, and in some ways, I kind of respect owner Dick Monfort's stance --- he always wants to win, and he doesn't want to rebuild.  If every team was like that, we wouldn't have a tanking issue in baseball.  The problem is, Monfort doesn't seem to realize what it takes to create a consistent winner, and (worse) seems to have insulated himself within the organization with only long-term employees, rather than a fresh voice that can bring a new perspective
9:50
I have no doubt some people in the Rockies org are as frustrated by the team's direction as the fans are, yet at the end of the day, it's the owner's call

Bieber, Civale, Plesac, Quantrill, and McKenzie as a starting rotation for 2022. Why not try to extend Jose, sign a couple of decent FA bats and challenge the WSox next year?
Mark P
9:50
Extending Ramirez doesn't seem likely, but I agree that a healthy Cleveland team can definitely rebound pretty quickly back into contention.  How much money they'll have to add those bats, however, is up in the air

Do you think that building chemistry in the minors as players mature (Greene and Torkelson come to mind) is an underappreciated part of a rebuild? Both players have spoken about how they've been able to grow and mature because of the other. Thank you for your thoughtful input, as I've grown accustomed to on these Sunday evenings!
Mark P
9:52
Team chemistry is always an important factor, as we've seen with so many recent World Series winners who had that long-term core group who'd played together for years (even dating back to the minors).
9:53
To use the Cubs as an example, this is perhaps why those players were all so disappointed things ended the way they did in Chicago.  They had that core group, one ring already in the trophy case, and more was expected.

Can we get a salary floor in this next cba agreement? hate hearing these owners cry poor
Mark P
9:55
The owners will want a firm salary cap in exchange for a firm salary floor.  I'd heard it suggested that a floor would take the form of the current luxury tax, where there is a threshold but with deeper penalties the more a team went under it
9:56
So for instance, if a salary floor is set at something like $90MM, a team would spend less, but at the cost of a "anti-luxury tax," or even draft picks if they get too far under

With Matt Chapman's continued offensive struggles, and his upcoming arbitration salary going up, the A's will probably be looking to trade him. What type of package do you think they could get in return for him? Thanks.
Mark P
10:00
Chapman has two arb years remaining, and made just under $6.5MM this year.  His average offensive output this year will hurt the A's asking price, but they'd still get some quality assets in a Chapman deal --- he's obviously still an excellent defender, and I'll bet multiple teams feel they could fix him at the plate
10:01
The Josh Donaldson trade package is the obvious comp for Oakland fans, but given the fewer years of control, it wouldn't be that much of a trade return

Am I the only one that didnt know Buster's real name was Gerald?

As a big "Best In Show" fan, I'm just upset that Buster never obtained the nickname of Busy Bee

10:06
what kind of contract is Marte looking at?
Mark P
10:08
According to reports, Marte wanted $50MM over a three- or four-year extension from the Marlins.  Probably safe to assume that will be his ask in free agency as well.  He will be 33 in October, but given how well he's been playing this season, I can see a team agreeing to something close to that number.
Money. It's a gas.
10:09
How does Chris Davis's retirement affect the Orioles payroll? I know they're not worried about the tax, but since his salary was averaged over the life of the contract, shouldn't the Orioles be "charged" that amount even though Chris is no longer on the payroll?
Mark P
10:10
Davis' deal is still being accounted for in the Orioles' 2022 tax number

I think the Tank & Rebuild is bad for baseball and I don't see the GM's as heroes.
Mark P
10:11
If one team is doing a major tank, it's a viable strategy.  If multiple teams are tanking, it muddies the waters for everyone.

Looking back now which was the worst trades for the cubs?  DJ LeMahieu and Tyler Colvin to the rockies for Ian Stewart and Casey Weathers or trading Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Bryant Flete and Matt Rose to the white Sox for Jose Quintana.
