If the Mets included a top tier prospect, could they find a taker for Lindor?
Mark P
8:16
Lindor has a 15-team no-trade clause, so it'd be somewhere between difficult and impossible.  If you're a team with the resources to take on Lindor's contract, why wouldn't you just sign one of the free agent shortstops rather than take a guy coming off such a tough season?

Do you buy the Royals recent success as a sign of things to come or just another late season push that leads to nothing next year? Know the recent pitching is the most important aspect of what happens.
Mark P
8:18
The Royals have plenty of interesting young talent, so I can understand why the front office decided to get aggressive last winter.  It looks like they jumped the gun at least a year too early, but it can't hurt a team to get some positivity going and "learn how to win," as the cliche goes.

If the Padres doesn't make the playoffs, are drastic changes on the horizon or just stay the course?
Mark P
8:22
A managerial change might be the most obvious move, not that it's Tingler's fault.

If I'm Padres ownership, I'm concerned about how much payroll is being tied up in players who were only semi-productive or not at all productive in 2021.  While the Padres still have prospect depth, their other trades have thinned that depth, and it would be a bit of an embarrassment if they have to move more prospects just to get another team to take a contract off their books.
With so many long-term deals now on the books, I'm not sure how much "drastic" change CAN occur, which might be the issue.

David Fletcher, Reid Detmers, Brandon Marsh for Shane Bieber…who says no?
Mark P
8:25
I think Cleveland can land more for Bieber if they shopped him.  But that's the kind of offer it would take to get the Tribe's attention.  Coming off a season of shoulder problems for Bieber, it'd be interesting to know what teams would be willing to give up for him (my guess is still a ton)
We must know...

Of the current Jr's, who's your favorite. Ronald, Vlad or Fernando?
Mark P

Being a Jays fan, I'm clearly in Vladdy's corner

So I guess Verlander and Grienke are both gone at the end of the year right?
Mark P
8:29
I don't think both will be back in Houston next year.  If I had to guess, Verlander is the likelier to stay since he might just accept the QO.  The key element for Verlander for 2022 is to play for a winning team, and the Astros still offer that competitiveness as well as a familiar environment.  That said, Verlander has such a rep that he could certainly still land multi-year offers.

MLBTR's Steve Adams had more analysis on the Astros' situation earlier this week: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/08/astros-justin-verlander-wont-pi...
Giants-esque Revivals
8:30
Given the organization's seeming ability tap into players at all levels ability do the Giants become a destination landing spot for free agents both minor and major league?  It does seem to help the team that their home park is playing more fair in particular to right and center field with the move of bullpens to centerfield.
Mark P
8:31
I'd certainly think that Giants have caught the attention of many a player looking for a bounce-back, so to some extent, they'll be the first choice of such players this winter.  This could allow them to pick and choose the two, three, X number of guys they think have a turn-around in them, and then save their bigger money for a more proven free agent
8:32
I think the Giants are by far the most interesting team to watch this winter since the possibilities are pretty much endless for them
Ben Cherington
8:33
Given my team has absolutely no payroll obligations next season, what's stopping my Pirates from taking on nearly the entire contract of a guy like Hosmer, Strasburg, Corbin, Aaron Hicks, Wil Myers, etc in order to get a prospect in return?
Mark P
8:33
Nothing, except that ownership has historically been allergic to any kind of big spending
Evan Axel
8:34
Does Oakland blow it all up this offseason or do they keep their core for one last shot?
Mark P
8:36
They have so many arbitration raises coming that, unless they're willing to uncharacteristically spend more, some moves will HAVE to be made to save on salary.  I think 2021 is the "one last shot" year for the A's with this core group, which is what made the Rosenthal signing so devastating for the team
Rockie Road
8:36
Any chance Trevor Story accepts the QO to rebuild his value after a poor 2021? Or are his bridges with the Rockies burned at this point?
Mark P
8:36
I can't see Story taking the QO after seeming so burned out on the Rockies experience.

National league gets the DH next year, Cards re-sign Waino and bring Pujols back? I'm sure the "non-profitable" DeWitts would love all the merch sales. What says you?
Mark P
8:38
Bringing Pujols in as a DH against lefty pitching would be fun, at the right price.  And re-signing Wainwright should absolutely be a priority, given how great he has looked this year

Do you think Mondesi is activated this week? Homers in two straight games.
Mark P
8:40
Mondesi's status has everything to do with his health, not his production on the field during these rehab assignments.  The Royals will be as cautious as possible.

What do you see the Rays doing this winter, considering they have numerous prospects ready to move up?
Mark P
8:42
You can't rule anything out with the Rays, so expect them to trade at least a few prominent members of their gigantic arbitration class
Dill
8:43
Who do the Blue Jays try to resign this winter? Ray or Semien?
Mark P
8:43
I think they'll try to bring both back, but that's an interesting hypothetical....if the Jays could only re-sign one, which do you think is a better fit?
The Blue Jays should prioritize re-signing....

Cards can't bring back Pujols, if he totally failed it would be hard to DFA a legend.

Did bloom throw away the Season at the deadline.
It seems like he wants 2022/2023 to be the year he spends
Mark P

I'm not sure we can single Bloom out, considering that we don't know if he is still under a "stay under the tax threshold" mandate from ownership.

Would letting them both walk free up money for Correa?
Mark P
8:50
Re: the "Astros could let both Verlander and Greinke go" question

I think Houston will get Correa go, too.  Their plan is likely to recoup draft picks via the QOs for at least Correa and maybe Verlander too, then acquire a replacement shortstop that doesn't come attached to any draft pick compensation
