Back in February, Preller signed an extension to keep him in SD through 2026.  Even as disappointing as this season was, I doubt the Padres would cut ties so quickly.

If Belt has a broken thumb, does that do in the Giants in the playoffs, since he has been so dominant the last few weeks.
Mark P
7:53
Belt was hit by a pitch today and had to leave the game.  Early tests are inconclusive and he'll be x-rays further tomorrow.  Anecdotally, Brandon Crawford heard from Belt that the injury doesn't feel too serious, but we'll see.

Needless to say, losing Belt would be a major blow to the Giants.  A platoon of Wade with Flores and/or Ruf could still be pretty productive, but they likely can't match Belt's bat

I think the Cubs trade Willson and Hendricks this off season and won't do much 'til 2023, (free agency). What do you think?
Mark P
7:55
It's a sell-low situation on Hendricks so I kind of doubt it, but it seems quite possible Contreras is also moved.

I tend to agree with you that the Cubs are more likely to take another step back this winter than reload for a run in 2022

Chances Marte is traded this offseason?
Mark P
7:57
As per Mike Hazen, the D'Backs are still in the evaluation phase and haven't yet decided on their direction for 2022.  Considering the hill they have to climb in that division, a rebuild certainly can't be ruled out, and Marte would be the top name moved in such a scenario

If the Phillies don’t make the playoffs, should they focus on moving salary and trying to reboot the roster(not rebuild) but reboot
Mark P
8:00
The Phils have enough talent that a rebuild isn't feasible, but they certainly need a lot more pitching depth.

Do the Angels cut Upton loose like they did with Pujols?
Mark P
8:01
I can see keeping Upton as depth if Adell or Marsh struggle early in 2022, or if there's an injury.  But if Adell/Marsh play as expected and Trout is back to his old self, then Upton might very well be expendable enough for a release

The Red Sox need to prioritize 1B this off season. Who’s a key 1B that would work for them?
Mark P
8:03
Given how Dalbec has been hitting over the last couple of months, I wouldn't call 1B a huge priority.  Since the teams has prioritized multi-position players, maybe just another utility type who can share first base

Bigger disappointment this season Mets or Padres. of another team ?
Mark P
8:04
The Padres, by far.

Best and worst MLB stadiums you've visited?
Mark P
8:05
My least-favorite is no longer an active park, so I can say Shea Stadium without Mets fans getting too upset at me, right?

My favorites were PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Wrigley, T-Mobile in Seattle, and Oracle Park in San Fran

What allowed Gabe Kapler to be successful in SF over PHI?
Mark P
8:08
There's something to be said for the talent and the infrastructure in place.  But also, it could be that Kapler simply needed time to grow into the role.  There are plenty of notable managers in baseball history who didn't succeed in their first jobs.

Do the Tigers go out and pick up a big name SS or do they wait on Kreidler?
Mark P
8:11
Kreidler looks like a promising young player, but if I have designs on contending in 2022, I'd rather have a more proven commodity at shortstop.

If anything, Kreidler might be a really interesting trade chip to market in talks to land a veteran star
Nick Krall
8:14
Is my job in jeopardy? If not, what do I do this winter to get the Reds back to the top of the NL Central next year for the first time in ten years?
Mark P
8:15
Krall = Reds PoBO

It would be odd to extend the manager and then fire the president of baseball ops, so I would guess Krall is safe

Didi has been horrible this year in the field and at the plate.  He’s been virtually unplayable. What do the Phillies do with him?
Mark P
8:16
He's a tough trade chip since his value is so low, other than in a bad-contract swap of some kind.  Even that could be tricky to arrange due to all the other available shortstops on the market who are clearly better options

Will the Mariners realistically contend for a title in 23?
Mark P
8:18
If Julio Rodriguez and the other young prospects live up to expectations quickly, and if the front office makes some shrewd pickups this winter and next.....sure!
8:19
I realize this is broad enough an answer to apply to almost any team with an elite prospect on the way up, but the M's look in good shape for the future
Dodger Al

Can the Dodgers sign Seager, Taylor, Mad Max, Kershaw and Jansen?
Dodger1958
8:20
Which free agents will the Dodgers most likely resign?
Mark P
8:21
If I had to rank that group in order of likelihood, I'd go Kershaw first, then Taylor/Scherzer tied, then Jansen, and I think Seager is as good as gone

Will Casetellanos opt out?  And what sort of contract could he expect if he did?
Mark P
8:23
I think Castellanos will definitely opt out.  He'll be only 30 on Opening Day 2022, so at least a four-year deal seems very realistic.
Go Go Power Ranger

Ranger Saurez has been low key great for Philly, CG 4-hit Shutout yesterday

Another big reason why the Phils don't have to (and shouldn't) rebuild.

Will the hot stove be cooler this year because GMs are waiting to see what happens with collective bargaining?
Mark P
8:26
I think this is a distinct possibility.  I do wonder if it'll lead to more early action from players who just want to get their next deal over with quickly, rather than sweat out a possible lockout.
Jesse
8:28
With the Cardinals offense finally clicking & so many players hitting to their potential, coupled with so much bad money coming off the books, would the Birds be wise to stand pat on the Offense & offer Scherzer 2 for $70 & add to the bullpen this offseason? Then call it an off-season?
Mark P
8:29
Adding Scherzer seems like a fine idea, but bringing back Wainwright is also a priority.  And I wouldn't punt on position players entirely, though the impetus could be on utility types rather than proper full-time starters.
(Or, the Cards sign a full-time starter and turn Edman and/or Sosa into that utility man.)
