What type of contract could Brandon belt land? His stats over the last 162 games are insane
Mark P
10:36
Belt turns 34 in April, and his missed time this year doesn't bode well considering his past injury history.

That said, you're right in noting that Belt has rather quietly been one of baseball's hitters over the last two seasons.  Another multi-year contract is a certainty, and I see something in the $14-$15MM AAV range.
The other possibility is that a team signs Belt to a shorter deal but worth more in AAV

Would Fletcher, Detmers, Suarez get it done for Shane Bieber?
Mark P
10:37
Absolutely not

What do the future Guardians need to compete for the division next year?
Mark P
10:38
Plenty of hitting
Trevor Story
10:39
Do I get a 1 year deal a la Josh Donaldson?
Mark P
10:41
Considering Story's middling year, he seems like a good candidate for the Donaldson/Semien pillow contract approach.

The qualifying offer complicates matters, however, since then his new team will be giving up a pick for just one year of Story.  However, a team might be willing to make that investment in order to spend a year wooing Story, so he is impressed enough to sign a longer-term extension.

Mark: Good Evening. Which of the  following C surnames can you envision seeing on the ‘22 Marlins: Canha, Conforto, Castellanos,
Mark P
10:43
Kim Ng and Derek Jeter have both said the Marlins will be active this offseason, and Ng noted there will be some money spent.  But it isn't yet known exactly how much money we're talking, and signing someone like a Castellanos would be a big expenditure.

Canha wouldn't be as expensive, or even Conforto might be another pillow-contract type if he wanted a chance to improve on his 2021 numbers.  But Miami's pitcher-friendly ballpark isn't exactly a great spot for a batter to rehab his numbers.

If the Phillies had known in 2019 that they wouldn’t make the playoffs for the first three years of Harper’s 13-year contract, would the analytics still support making that deal?
Mark P
10:45
Harper isn't the reason the Phillies haven't made the postseason, however.  Far from it.  The Phils are in the unusual situation of being a team that is doing pretty well with its big-ticket expenditures, but can't generate much help from its own farm system.

Sopranos or Breaking Bad?
Mark P
10:46
Breaking Bad.  This may be blasphemy, but i always found Sopranos to be pretty overrated.

What do you think about a Brewers-White Sox World Series prediction?
Mark P
10:49
I suspect the White Sox are going out in the first round

Do the Rangers look to trade for a catcher like Joey Bart, MJ Melendez, Gabriel Moreno, Austin Nola, Austin Allen or Logan O’Hoppe?  Sam Huff doesn’t profile well at C. FA market is weak.
Mark P
10:51
Texas will probably give Huff more of a look at catcher before already picking someone else as their future at the position

Poll: Most disappointing team this year? Mets, Padres, Twins, A's, Blue Jays, Reds?
Mark P
10:51
I feel like the Padres would win this poll in a walk, so I'll hold off on posting it
Re Harper
10:52
His contract is the best value in baseball. Ok not best, but as far as mega deals go.
Mark P
10:54
Harper receives a lot of unwarranted criticism, in my view.  It would be one thing if he wasn't playing well, but he's been hitting through the roof for two seasons now.  The big contract inevitably makes him a lightning rod, but again, Harper's contract isn't preventing the Phillies from making other moves, or preventing the team from winning

Isn't the 28-man September roster the best? IL placements, optioning, DFAs, contract selections all month. None of these games with ten pinch hitters or a team of 28 playing one with 40 players. It's real baseball!
Mark P
10:55
Getting rid of the 40-man September rosters was an underrated great call by the league.  Long overdue.

Can we resign Kershaw, Seager, and Scherzer?
Mark P
10:56
They "can," except I've suspected since the Nationals trade that Turner was acquired as Seager's replacement
Shoeless Joe for HOF
10:57
If they can get rid of Hosmer, do you think a 1B Machado, 2B Cronenworth, 3B Tatis, SS Abrams infield is viable/possible?
Mark P
10:57
Machado at first base?  His 3B glove is far too good, it'd be a waste to make him a first baseman
Who’s on first?
10:58
Angels off-season strategy? Is signing an Ohtani extension no. 1 priority?
Mark P
10:59
Their top priority should be adding as much good pitching as they can find.  Ohtani is under control for two more years so it isn't a critically urgent conversation to have immediately, but some talks with Ohtani's reps should happen to at least establish a guideline of what an extension will cot

Cards looking for the next franchise catcher. Could I pluck Carlson away for Joey Bart?
Mark P
10:59
Given all the difficulties the Cardinals have had finding outfielders, now you want to trade Carlson away?

Beane in 2022: 1) working for the A's, 2) working for the Mets, 3) working for an unnamed 3rd team, or 4) out of baseball?
Mark P
11:01
#1 is the likeliest scenario, and I suspect by a comfy margin.  Then #4, #3, then a big gap, then #2

The Padres seem to acquire players that are at or near peak value. It hasn't worked out for them. Much of the Giants success this season has involved guys that they acquired at deep discounts. Seeing the Giants' success with it, will the discount model become the new trend among MLB executives?
Mark P
11:04
I wouldn't really call it a "new" trend, since teams sign random players every year hoping they've found a hidden gem, or because they think they've identified a way to help that player improve.  It's just that the Giants seem like they're incredibly good at it.

How much does a manger never having played in the majors matter?  People say the Padres gave up on Tingler.  Shouldn't they be playing for themselves?
Mark P
11:05
Many of the best managers in baseball history never played in a big league game, so i don't think it's that big of a factor.
