Don’t know why, having been stung so many times by them, but is there finally reason for optimism for the Pirates, given their rebuilt minor league system. Any thoughts as to them competing in the next 2-3 years?
Mark P
7:53
Competitive Pirates baseball in 2024 should be the team's goal, that seems like a decently realistic timeline for this rebuild.  Obviously quite a bit of work still be done in two years' time, but two years is also a good amount of time.

Will Hal actually spend this off-season? He has been more calculating than George was.
Mark P
7:56
The last time the Yankees ducked under the tax line and reset their penalties, they were bigger spenders against the next offseason.  So I'd expect the Bombers to flex their financial muscles again.
Astros fan

How much money comes off the books if Astros let Correa and Greinke go, and Verlander does not take the QO?
Mark P
7:56
Just shy of $80MM in salary
Tork and Greene

When are we coming up to the Show?
Mark P
7:58
Early in 2022.  Maybe by Opening Day, though that might depend on if the new CBA addresses the service-time trickery.

If the Jays starting offer for J Ram was Gurriel Jr, Pearson, and Kirk, what more would have to be tacked on to get it done?
Mark P
7:59
Maybe Moreno instead of Kirk, and at least one of Orelvis Martinez or Jordan Groshans.

It's not 80 million coming off the books for the Astros. Arizona is paying 10.3 million of Greinke's salary. It's 69.4 million.
Mark P
8:00
Oof, silly oversight on my part.  Jonathan J is correct

Chances we sign Starling Marte again?
Mark P
8:02
There was enough of a gap between the two sides in their midseason extension talks that I'd strongly doubt a reunion is happening.  Especially since Marte's asking price has surely gone up in the wake of his great performance in Oakland.
Tigers!
8:03
Should the Tigers have traded more veterans at the deadline and set themselves up for more "top 5" drafts picks (Grossman, Soto, Cisneros, Schoop, Fulmer etc)
Mark P
8:05
According to Tigers brass, they didn't receive any offers acceptable enough to pull the trigger on those moves.  Plus, it seems like the Tigers really valued having a winning team for so much of season, to help get the young kids used to success as a platform for 2022 and beyond.

Sixto for Joey Bart?
Mark P
8:06
If the Giants moved Bart, they would look for a player who didn't just miss an entire season
Giants
8:06
How did the Giants fly so under everyone’s radar and then win 107?
Mark P
8:07
I think a fair number of prognosticators said "hey, don't sleep on the Giants" going into the year, but certainly not to the extent of them winning 107 games.  It's a credit to that organization that they've turned things around in such a resounding fashion.
Canadian Cuisine

Hey Mark I'd like to check out a game in TOR next season. Do they have any unique Canadian food at the Roger's Centre?
Mark P
8:09
One of the highlights of my fandom occurred when I was once standing in line at the Rogers Centre concession stand, and the couple behind me (Yankees fans in town from upstate NY) asked what poutine was.  When I told them, their faces lit up like I'd just revealed the meaning of life.

Do you think increased investment in the quality of minor league life could be coming along? I see teams like the Giants offering players more rest via more scheduled days off/platoons, plus the larger coaching staff presumably allowing increased attention for player preparation and continued development. It’s at least worth a try to improve living conditions, pay, nutrition in the minors, isn’t it? Even if it only produces a few extra big leaguers, could be another edge until other teams jump on board and it’s time to find the next edge
Mark P
8:11
The fact that all teams haven't already been doing this for years is mind-boggling to me.

Just want to say thank you for holding these chats.  They're a highlight of the week.  No question.  Just a thank you.

Much obliged!  The pleasure is all mine, it's always fun talking baseball with the MLBTR readers.

On that happy note, this chat has sailed well beyond the two-hour mark, so we really should wrap things up.  Back next weekend!
