SOTO
7:10
Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez, and ONE of Kirby or Hancock? This is another reason you're nowhere near qualified to do this. That wouldn't even be HALF the return for Soto. He's ONLY 22, and he's ALREADY one of the best players in baseball. This isn't some washed-up veteran near the end of his peak. Soto doesn't even start to peak for another 4-5 seasons! Just quit your job now. The Nats could ask a team for AT LEAST their top 5-6 prospects, and NOBODY would be off-limits.
Mark P
7:11
The question was specifically, "what would Seattle realistically offer for Soto," not what would it take for the Nats to actually trade Soto.
7:12
If the Nats actually made Soto available, who knows how aggressive Jerry Dipoto might get if he thought there was a realistic chance of getting Soto to Seattle.  But it's really kind of a moot point, since there is no way Soto is being dealt.

The opening day shortstop for the Phillies in 2022 will be......?
Mark P
7:15
Not Didi Gregorius.  The Phillies could be players for one of the big shortstops, but that adds yet another big contract to the ledger.

However....Herrera and McCutchen will be off the books, so that frees up around $25MM.  If the Phils can get another team to eat at least some of Gregorius' money, that's another chunk of salary saved.  So it isn't out of the question that the Phillies open up the chequebook again and go after one of the free agent shortstop names

If the Rockies extend Jon Gray, does he get more or less than Senzatela’s extension?  Senza is younger and has more WAR over the past 2 seasons.
Mark P
7:16
I'd imagine Gray would get more just because he is already so close to free agency.

Does Dombrowski make a few "blockbuster trades" and retool the Phillies Roster over the off season including a handful of mid level free agent signings nd "pillow contracts"....?!  I don's see him selling the farm since he appears to be rebuilding the Front Office, Scouting and Development sides of the Phillies management structure..
Mark P
7:18
Dombrowski finds himself having to first build the farm before he can sell it!  Beyond that, the Phillies also don't have much in the way of premium minor league talent to trade, and the good prospects they do have (i.e. Stott) might be needed for the 2022 squad rather than as trade chips
It's an interesting challenge for Dombrowski, and rather different than anything he has faced in his long career

Think Yankees have any interest in DeJong with Cards? Low AAV and just committed for two years
Mark P
7:20
This might be an interesting move for the Yankees if they did only want a bridge to Volpe.  Adding DeJong's excellent glove is a boost to the infield defense, and DeJong might also join the long list of hitters who seem to improve once they leave St. Louis.

Sorry for the ignorance- do baseball contracts need to be the same dollar amount each season? Can money be front loaded so that a declining player could be more easily moved?
Mark P
7:22
Nope, many contracts have differing dollar values every season.  For instance, Eric Hosmer's deal with the Padres broke down as $20MM per year from 2018-22, and then $13MM per yea from 2023-25.

For luxury tax purposes, however, the average annual value of the contract is used.

Why do you think the Cubs won't be splashy? What are they saving for? And is there any chance they will bring back any of the previous core? Maybe Schwarber is worth a look if the universal DH is implemented in 2022?
Mark P
7:27
The Cubs' spending has been very limited over the last few years.  Until I actually see them make a notable signing, I have to believe they'll continue to limit their dollars, and perhaps use 2022 as a further retooling year.

Should the cardinals chase one of the premier shortstops to strengthen their lineup or go after pitching depth.
Mark P
7:29
Why not both?  The Cards have a lot of money coming off their books.

Dodgers will probably try very hard to resign Max. Could you see Price being moved to clear a bit of salary? Perhaps talk to the Angels again around a Price + cash for Rengifo deal?
Mark P
7:31
I would love to know the ins and outs of what exactly happened with that Rengifo/Pederson trade.  And, if whatever happened soured Arte Moreno on making any other trades with the Dodgers (not that the two teams are exactly frequent trade partners).

If the Angels are also in the running for Scherzer, it's also hard to see them doing the Dodgers a solid and helping them avoid tax payments

7:33
Earlier answer you said multiple teams would trade for Trout which is true but what kind of package from Philly? Mets? Yankees? Red Sox?
Mark P
7:34
Trout's injury-shortened year notwithstanding, he's still Mike Trout.  The Angels can rightfully command a huge package of young talent and MLB-ready players in exchange.

Do the Giants extend Qualifying Offers to Belt and DeSclafani?
Mark P
7:36
Good question.  I can see SF issuing the offer to both players, and if either accept, it's not a huge loss.  The Giants have a lot of room in their rotation so they would like Disco back, even if something like a $20MM AAV is a little high.
7:37
After all of the speculation over the last few years about the Giants rebuild, it would be pretty funny if Belt, Crawford, and Posey were ALL back in 2022
Nick
7:38
Instead of trading for Chapman, what if the Yankees traded for Matt Olson? LH hitter to replace Rizzo, and his glove makes the entire infield better. They could give up O. Peraza and Loaisiga
Mark P
7:39
Olson would be a great fit for Yankee Stadium, but while Peraza/Loaisiga is a decent offer, the A's would respond with "and....?"
Spooky Tre
7:39
What would you think of the Cubs trading Willson Contreras to Miami for Max Meyer, Jorge Alfaro and another prospect of some sort?
Mark P
7:39
The Marlins aren't giving up Meyer for one year of Contreras.
Angels
7:40
Don't we need to sign or trade for TWO B type starting pitchers?
Mark P
7:41
I'd prefer one ace and one "B-type" starter, but yeah, multiple arms are needed
Atkins
7:43
Will I trade one of my catchers this off season ? (Kirk, McGuire, Jansen or Moreno ).
Mark P
7:45
The Jays still have a good deal of depth, but they've already moved one young catcher (Riley Adams) for next to nothing in Brad Hand, which was a big miss.

Moreno is the keeper, and McGuire is the most expendable (and also the one with the least trade value).  Jansen or Kirk could therefore be the most logical trade chips, with Kirk likely having the more value of the two.
7:46
Now, as a Toronto fan who has seen about 30 years' worth of "Blue Jays catchers of the future" fall short of expectations (or switch positions, a la Delgado), I would almost be willing to just keep everyone and let the chips fall where they may.
Josh
7:47
did the Reds collapse or is that a false narrative?
Mark P
7:48
"Collapse" is a little strong, since while they didn't play well down the stretch, they also kind of ran into a buzzsaw in the red-hot Cardinals.
Halo fan

Why have Angels not signed Raisel to extension? They need him to head bullpen.
Mark P
7:49
Iglesias is likely eager to hit free agency and cash in on his big season.  The Angels would have to pay a premium to convince him to pass up testing the market.

7:51
Do the Red Sox pursue Chris Taylor and become the Dodgers of the East? Maybe snap Bellinger as a one year stop gap to Casas?
Mark P
7:52
If you're going to model yourself after a team, the Dodgers are a pretty good pick.  Taylor would be a great add in Boston (as he would on many teams).

I'm sure several teams are wondering if they can fix Bellinger, but if I'm the Sox, I'm more focused on re-signing Schwarber or seeing what Dalbec can do in the wake of his nice finish.
