While 107 wins next year might be a reach, I'd be far more shocked if the 2022 Giants had a losing record.  This team is for real, the front office knows what it's doing, and now they have a lot of money and resources to spend on more talent
Astros
9:27
the Astros like shorter term contracts. Do they go after Semien on a 5 year deal to fill the void left by Correa?
Mark P
9:28
Five years seems to be the Astros' preferred ceiling, which might fit quite nicely with Semien's market.  They're a contender that can tell Semien "forget about second base or possible moves around the diamond, we want you as a shortstop, period."

Who has a winning season first Pirates or Orioles?  Or non of the above ..
Mark P
9:30
I would tend to say Pittsburgh just because the AL East looks like it'll be such a beast for the foreseeable future.  The Orioles might take solid steps forward but still might top out at under 81 wins because of their tough competition.

When do the free agent signing predictions come out?
Mark P
9:32
The predictions are in the works as we speak!  Might not be much longer to wait....
Why
9:33
Why do the Yanks keep trusting Sanchez in such an important position?' It's not like they had someone like POSADA to show them the importance of a defense-first catcher
Mark P
9:34
Because Sanchez had so much hitting potential that the Yankees were willing to live with subpar defense, and they hoped his glovework would improve.

After the last two seasons, however, I'm leaning towards the Yankees making a change behind the plate.
So who
9:35
You mentioned guardians targets but who is a trade candidate? McKenzie? Plesac?
Mark P
9:37
It probably won't be bigger names like those pitchers, but rather prospects or excess parts that on the 40-man fringe.

9:38
With Josh Lowe, Walls, and Brujan ready for The Show, should Rays trade away Brando Lowe n KK?
Mark P
9:39
Kiermaier definitely seems like a trade candidate.  And, just how the Rays do business, a Lowe trade wouldn't be all that surprising either.  I do think Lowe's streakiness and his postseason letdown have left him underrated in the eyes of many fans, but the Rays would get a ton back for Lowe in a deal.

If Yankees are willing to take on Cain’s money, any shot at getting Hader or Adames?
Mark P
9:42
Cain has a partial (five-team) no-trade clause, so that could be a complication.  And Adames isn't going anywhere, but Hader would seem like he'd be available under the right circumstances.  Dealing Hader primarily to save some money (whether Cain or Bradley) wouldn't be ideal for the Brewers, but they could rebound by reinvesting those savings into more talent to help them in 2022
Bauer
9:43
Do you guys not take Trevor Bauer questions?  Can the Dodgers get out from the contract on moral clause ?
Mark P
9:44
I think we've all answered Bauer questions in chats, it's just that there aren't any real new details to provide any new answers.  I'd need to know the specifics of the morals clause before weighing in, because you know any attempt to enforce that would open a can of worms.
Catcher re shuffle
9:45
I feel like so many teams are lacking an adequate catcher, while at the same time so many teams have multiple good catchers/prospects almost ready. Do you think we will see a lot of trades involving catchers this off season? MJ Melendez, Joey Bart, Alejandro Kirk, Austin Nola and Austin Allen come to mind. There are a lot more as well
Mark P
9:46
This same thought occurred to me while reading Darragh McDonald's piece about the Marlins' catching search earlier today.  There are more teams than you might imagine with "depth" at catcher, even if that depth is (in some cases) more quantity over quality.
A-Rod
9:46
Am I the next PBO for the Mets? Would be a very interesting storyline...
Mark P
9:47
I think I have a better chance of landing that job than A-Rod does
Hugh Sezno
9:48
Could you see the Nats going for position flexibility, ie Chris Taylor/Escobar, instead of the big SS or OF considering all of their holes in the diamond and young players being in consistent.  Or even Bryant.
Mark P
9:49
A versatile player would certainly give the Nats some options, true.
I also think Bryant counts as a "big" OF, wouldn't you?  And even Taylor as a "big" SS/OF option, since he'll be landing a nice contract this offseason.
Rangers Fan
9:50
I see a lot of articles saying the Rangers are planning to be very active in the FA market. They always mention who they’re probably NOT going after. Who ARE they going after with all that money??
Mark P
9:53
If you're a big-name free agent who gets an offer (even a major offer) from the Rangers, you have to be very confident that the team is on the right track to contend by 2023.  Otherwise, you'll get some real second-hand remorse about locking yourself in for at least a few more years of losing baseball when you could've joined a winner.

That's why I tend to think Texas will aim for the second-tier FAs at most.  A team like Seattle or even Detroit can better promote itself as being on the cusp of contention, whereas the Rangers just lost 102 games.

Earlier this week, Boston's radio play by play team mentioned hearing from multiple sources around the league renewed optimism that a lockout would be avoided. For two sides that love to air dirty laundry, I suppose no news is good news right now, but how are you feeling about this winter? Is today's news about the minor leagues a good sign or a non-factor?
Mark P
9:55
I hope the radio guys are right, since a work stoppage would an absolute nightmare for everyone involved in baseball and every fan of the sport.

Today's news about the minor league housing was probably inevitable given all of the movement towards such a uniform edict, but it at least can't hurt the tenor of whatever negotiations are underway.

Odds Castellanos stays in Cincinnati?  He and his family loved the organization and he has said it's the most fun he has had playing the game.  New CBA might make it risky to opt out.  Or will money talk?
Mark P
9:58
I think he's definitely opting out, since even with the CBA hanging over everything and the Reds putting a qualifying offer on him, Castellanos will land a lot more than two years and $34MM in his next contract.

The compromise could be the Reds signing Castellanos to a lucrative extension to get him to pass up his opt-out, though I tend to think he'll test the market

Kiermaier to the Guardians for a pitcher seems to make a lot of sense.
Mark P

Cleveland probably thinks they already have a cheaper version of Kiermaier in Myles Straw

what do you think about lh dh for  the Cards
Mark P

Brad Miller reunion, anyone?
Not a democracy
10:03
I know fans can’t boo someone out of an organizational position, but eith so many fans left wondering why John Mozeliak still has a job, what’s your take? Are the Cards firing people who aren’t “yes men”? Why don’t we see the GM doing a lot of the roster moves? There’s a lot to wonder about the Cardinals organization right now. Thoughts?
Mark P
10:06
I look forward to eventually hearing the real deal about the Shildt firing, but it's also possible we've already gotten the gist of it ---- the Cards front office were just increasingly not on the same page with Shildt and weren't planning to retain him, except then the team made things awkward by winning 17 straight games.  (Good problem to have!)

For Mozeliak, he does have a strong track record, for as much as STL fans might grumble about his methods.  A lot of teams that can't get into the playoffs would love to be in the position of not getting over the postseason hump, though Cardinals fans have higher expectations for their team.

There’s been some discussion about the Giants making Joey Bart available in trade since Posey had such a good comeback year. But I don’t see it. Posey is 35 and even if the Giants pick up his option, I can’t see him playing more than another year, maybe two at most. Since Posey’s playing time has been limited early in the season to preserve him for later in the year, there should be plenty of ABs for Bart. And if the NL has the DH, there might be more ABs there. Not to mention, Posey would have a full season to mentor Bart. I can’ see Bart going anywhere.
Mark P
10:08
This is a solid take.  I do think the Giants would move Bart for the right offer, but it would be a very big offer....he's still one of the game's best prospects.

With the Yankees letting go 3 coaches, is this a sign that they bring back Boone or let him go as well?
Mark P
10:09
Unless the Yankees are waiting to interview someone specific, I tend to think they would've officially parted ways with Boone by now if they were really thinking about letting him walk
