Do you like Bob Melvin hire for the Padres?   Will he be enough for the Padres to make the playoffs or do the Padres need much more?
Mark P

Great hire for San Diego.  Melvin won't solve all their problems, but he has a proven track record as a manager and should quell any of the clubhouse issues that arose late last season.

With all this Chicago talk...deep dish or thin crust?
Mark P
1:53
I feel like I've mentioned this before in a chat and gotten flooded with angry responses, but.....I'm not a fan of deep dish pizza.  So I'll pick thin crust, if necessary.

If the Dodgers non-tender Belli, who picks him up and for how much?
Mark P
1:55
It's such a fascinating case with Bellinger, since while I can see the argument for non-tendering him, I have a hard time believing that the Dodgers would actually let a recent MVP walk for nothing
1:56
There's a much better chance the Dodgers tender him and, if they are open to moving on, shop him on the trade market.  (Or, shop him before the arb deadline.)

Mike Rizzo always wants to field a competitive team, and the Nats are always in the top 10 payrolls. They have a ton of money available and some possible interesting trade chips in Robles and Kieboom. Could you see them as a team that could go out and land Starling Marte ($20 per), Nelson Cruz ($20 per), and Stroman ($22 per), and field a legit competitive team in the NL East next year? Thanks.
Mark P
1:58
Not sure they'd spend to that extent, but I do think the Nats are likely to try and get back to contention quickly.  Maybe one big signing and then a few other lower-tier, short-term deals.....maybe not unlike their moves last winter, except with one big centerpiece player like Marte.

I offer to take on all of the Royals' bad contracts in exchange for them taking Hosmer off my hands. Thoughts?

The $20.5MM for Minor/Santana in 2022 for the $59MM still owed to Hosmer?  Obviously San Diego would do that in a heartbeat, but the Royals would want more some significant prospects added to the package.

Dipoto was recently saying that the M’s might prefer to go shorter term at 3B as a bridge to Noevli Marte. What would a package for Josh Donaldson look like?
Mark P
2:03
Donaldson is pretty pricey for a "short-term" add, and he has two seasons remaining plus a club option for 2024.

Giants analyst Mike Krukow said publicly that he doesn’t believe Joey Bart is ready for the bigs when it comes to handling pitchers and calling games. With Casali eligible for arbitration will the Giants decision on whether to nontender him or not be an indication on whether they think Bart is ready as a backup for Posey?
Mark P
2:05
I think the Giants will keep Casali regardless of what they plan on doing with Bart.  With the DH presumably available next year, the team can rotate Posey as a designated hitter to keep him fresh, and give Casali and Bart some playing time

Cardinals and Astros trade of any kind feels….unlikely

Ha, oops, forgot about that.

Man that is way too much for Ketel Marte. Are you serious?!? Lololol
Mark P

Controlled for the next three seasons, he's put up big numbers, and he can play multiple positions.  Marte has a ton of value.
Nate Pearson
2:09
What's my story in 2022?  Am I a starter? A reliever?  A little bit of both?  What's my innings limit going to look like?  How bad has not pitching any significant number of innings the last three years hurt my development?  (Personally I can see myself has a hell of a set up man next year)
Mark P
2:10
The Blue Jays surely still see Pearson as a starter, but using him as a reliever (or as a starter on an innings limit) seems like the play for 2022.  What Pearson needs most is just to stay healthy and get some consistent work under his belt.

We've exceeded the two-hour mark on this chat, so it's time to wrap things up.  Thanks for all the questions, and more chatting will commence next weekend!
