Since Manaea is only a year away from free agency and the A's don't seem like they're preparing to extend anyone, Manaea seems to be one of the likeliest trade candidates on that roster (or maybe on any roster this offseason).
The A's can get a good return for him, maybe something like an MLB-ready younger player and a lesser prospect

Has the Mets Prez search officially become an SNL skit at this point? Are the Mets embarrassed by this yet?
Mark P
9:17
It'd be something only sports fans would get, but I'm a little surprised SNL hasn't done a "Mets GM search" sketch just yet.  If you're reading this Colin Jost, get on it!

Should I sign CT3 and trade Pollack?
Mark P
9:19
Re-sign Taylor, sure.  But trading Pollock wouldn't be advisable, unless they can get a lot back for him.  AJP has been quietly really good over the last two seasons.
Hall of Fame
9:19
Analytics is changing the game (some ways not for the good). With teams now starting openers or having pitchers only go 2 times through the roster. It appears we may not see many (if any) pitchers going into the Hall of Fame in the future. This doesn't qualify for the current 10 plus year starters (Verlander, Kershaw). How to you see the future pitchers in relation to possibility of going to the HOF?
Mark P
9:20
Voters are going to adjust to the new realities of baseball as well, so the standards for electing starting pitchers will also change.  For instance, deGrom seems like a solid HOF candidate right now, and he might not even get to 100 wins for his career.

Semien is destined for the Tigers is my White Sox fan guess.
Mark P

I do think Detroit will land one of the big shortstops, and Semien would be a tremendous fit for that team.

More likely to be in another uniform next year....Olson or Chapman?

More likely to be traded this winter?

At the risk of bumming out any Oakland fans....I think there's also a solid chance both are dealt.

Twins trade Garver to Miami for? (insert pitcher here)
Mark P
9:25
Just throwing it out there, but Max Meyer is from Minnesota and the Twins took a flier on drafting him late in the 2017 draft but he obviously decided to go to college.  I have to imagine he'd still be on the Twins' radar as a trade target, though I dunno if Miami would do Meyer-for-Garver straight up
As part of a package deal with multiple players on both sides?  Now you're talking.

Always ketchup

Not sure why I keep hearing White Sox might not be able to compete money-wise for top FAs. This is your window to win and getting blasted by the Astros should not be acceptable
Mark P
9:28
In a vacuum, yes.  But the White Sox have never been huge spenders, especially not for a team in a big market.  And, is Jerry Reinsdorf really going to green-light more spending in a year when labor talks are such an issue?

My buddy is a Reds fan & he thinks the Reds are shedding salary so they can sign bigtime bullpen help & Story or (Corey!) Seager.
Mark P

Sadly, I think your friend's optimism is misplaced.  The Reds are just cutting payroll.

do the brewers have a big signing in them?
Mark P
9:31
I was thinking this when writing the Brewers offseason outlook the other day (cheap plug)
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/11/brewers-should-look-to-upgrade-...
Yelich is getting more expensive since his extension is kicking in, and the starters are getting more expensive via arbitration.  But Cain only has one year left, and Avisail is already a free agent, so there isn't THAT much in the way of big commitments on the books.
9:32
That said, the Brewers might also want to lock up (or try, at least) Burnes or Woodruff, and put their future funds towards that aim

Why are the yankees considered World Series contenders if they were so boom-and-bust this season?
Mark P

I mean, they still won 91 games.
Sorry, 92 games!

If you are ownership / front office, do you sign any free agents BEFORE collective bargaining is signed?  I see a lot of things that could be up in the air that could have serious consequences if free agent signs and an agreement isn't reached.
Mark P
9:36
Depends on the player in question.  I could see some teams and players eager to get some things figured out quickly in case there is a lockout, rather than deal with weeks (and hopefully not months) of uncertainty during a roster freeze

Is Pete Walker a + factor when Jays are negotiating with FA pitchers, especially starters?
Mark P
9:37
Most definitely.  Pitchers absolutely have great interest in who the pitching coach is, how the training staff operates, and a hundred other behind-the-scenes details.  Now, whether those details are enough to overcome, say, another team offering $20MM more in salary, who knows.

A(nother) swap between Seattle and Tampa feels inevitable. Kiermaier and Wendle specifically would address a couple of needs for Seattle and allow them to splurge on starting pitching and 2B. But how far is Tampa really likely to shake things up? KK and Wendle have been a key part of their success.
Mark P
9:40
The Rays are always willing to trade virtually anyone, and I think they'd happily like to get Kiermaier off their book.  Kiermaier/Wendle would require a pretty good package back from the M's, so it's not like the Rays wouldn't get some benefit from such a trade
