Is crane not giving Correa the mega millions because he doesn’t want to spend the money or because he thinks Correa will decline in 5-7 years and become a bad contract?
Mark P
10:43
It seems like the Astros aren't really willing to go over five (or six at the most) years for anyone, unless it's a truly special circumstance, and they don't seem to think Correa is such a special player.
10:44
Now, to be fair, you can't say the Astros aren't willing to spend if they're willing to shell out five year deals in the $150-$160MM range.  Even if you have a ceiling contract-wise, you can get a lot of talent if that ceiling is $160MM

Will Jose Siri be the opening day centerfielder for the Astros? If not who are some realistic candidates?
Mark P

McCormick and Meyers played well enough for a half-season that I don't see why Houston wouldn't try that platoon again

Can you name one pundit or expert who picked the Braves to win the World Series even after the regular season had finished?
Mark P
10:48
Someone pointed this stat out the other day, and it's incredible.....in the year of Hank Aaron's passing, the Braves won 44 games in the first half and 44 games in the second half.  Then they won the Series in the 44th week of 2021.

If you'd told me about that 44-game split statistic before the playoff started, I would've bet the farm on Atlanta winning.  That is amazing karma.

Will the Giants pick up the current A's territory, if the As move out of California?
Mark P
10:49
The Giants already control the Bay Area "territory," which is a weird quirk in the territorial rights rules.  This is why the A's couldn't move to San Jose or Fremont, because the Giants controlled those areas but not Oakland itself.

realistically, what is verlander worth, keeping in mind his age, tj surgery, no cheat
Mark P
10:51
I would be hesitant to commit more than one year, but I'd give him $20MM because it's Justin Verlander.  If he's even 75% of what he was, that's still a heck of a pitcher.

In the real world, I think Verlander gets something like two years and $40MM in free agency

Why doesn't anyone want the job? Culture? sandy? Steve Cohen?
Mark P
10:53
Seems like it's kind of an "all of the above" situation, but I think the unsettled nature of Alderson's position might be the biggest factor.  If an executive is taking over a front office, they want total authority over baseball matters, not another veteran baseball exec looking over your shoulder.

What do you think will happen if the cba gets a payroll floor ?   Will the small market teams start spending for fa or just take the hit
Mark P
10:55
I have my doubts that a payroll floor would be instituted, since it would seem like the owners would want to pair it with a payroll ceiling (or hard cap) or a lower luxury tax threshold.
In the short term, a salary floor would mean that some of the lower-payroll teams would start taking on some bad contracts from any teams over the tax line

Jose Rameriz for Wander Franco. Who says no?

Tampa
Which seems wild, but yeah, Tampa is the likelier of the two teams to say no

Been hearing a lot of rumors regarding an X-Man trade. With the free agents likely to have high AAV, does it make sense especially taking in the affect of the Boston market pressure?
Mark P

Why would Marvel sell the rights to the X-Men after waiting so long to...

....oh, you mean Bogaerts!  My bad.  I guess a trade wouldn't be totally out of the question, but what team is going to give up a ton for Bogaerts if they suspect he'll opt out next winter?  Especially when, if a team is that hard up for a shortstop, they can just try to sign one of the big names on the market?

From the Sox perspective, I'd guess they'd try to extend Bogaerts and exhaust all options on that end before looking to move him

Are the winter meetings virtual or will MLB people be in person?  Does MLBTR ever attend?
Mark P
11:02
The winter meetings might not happen at all in the event of a lockout, but I believe some kind of in-person meetings were being planned.

MLBTR has sent personnel to the meetings in the past, yes

We're over the two-hour mark at this point, which is fitting for the first weekend chat of the offseason!  Thanks for all the questions, back next Saturday or Sunday.
