To be honest, I tend to start the chats when I think there's a lull for any breaking news, so sticking to a stricter schedule would be difficult on a night when there's a bunch of stuff happening, or some late-breaking news

Thoughts on Donaldson/Buxton to Seattle? What kind of return would they want, assuming Seattle takes on the remaining $$ on Donaldson's deal?
Mark P
10:11
Not Julio Rodriguez for certain, but maybe one of Hancock or Kirby as the headliner, and maybe the M's send one MLB-ready player (Toro?) back as part of the package as well.

I don't think Minnesota would do this, btw.  That type of trade is a real "blow it up" kind of move, and I think the Twins still feel they can contend in 2022.
Not to say that Buxton might not be dealt if they can't figure out an extension, but it'd be for more of a win-now type of return

Melvin simply thinks the Padres have a better chance of winning the WS next year than the A's do. Which anyone with eyes can see is true right now.
Mark P
10:14
That might be true, but Melvin was under contract to the A's, and they just let him go for nothing.  It's an unusual move for a team to make with a manager, especially one as long-tenured as Melvin.  It had the feel of professional courtesy, like "things are going to get pretty grim here Bob, so if you want out, we won't get in the way."

10:15
With Cleveland facing a 40-man roster crunch, can they swing a trade beforehand? Or do they lack leverage because teams know they can't protect all their prospects?
Mark P
10:16
I predict they'll work out at least one deal.  They may lack some leverage, but keep in mind that lots of teams are facing some level of crunch.

Do you see the Brewers trade Jackie Bradley Jr?
Mark P
10:17
They can try, and it'd be a good move to save some money if can find someone willing to overlook Bradley's offensive collapse.  Or, maybe a bad contract swap of some sorts.

If the NYY called up Balt and asked for Mullins, offered up Volpe/? Would they listen?
Mark P
10:18
The O's would definitely listen, sure.  They'd want a top-flight prospect back in any Mullins deal, and Volpe would fit the bill

What is Kikuchi possibly thinking declining his player option to return to Seattle? Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy about it as an M’s fan—but perplexed.
Mark P
10:19
Scott Boras rarely misreads the market, so I'm guessing he's heard through the grapevine that a multi-year deal is out there for Kikuchi, or else Kikuchi might just want to go back to Japan.  (Or maybe Kikuchi just wants out of Seattle and would prefer another MLB team.)

Brewers firesale. What's hader and everyone arb2 and over get in return other than everything
Mark P
10:21
I highly doubt that's happening.  If anything, Milwaukee should be looking to add another big piece or two to put that roster over the top

is it known which teams are on eric hosmer's no-trade list?
Mark P
10:23
According to Ken Rosenthal, the ten teams on Hosmer's no-trade list for 2021 were the Athletics, Blue Jays, Brewers, Cardinals, Giants, Indians, Mariners, Orioles, Pirates, and Tigers.

Now, since he can change that list from year to year, it is likely his 2022 list will be altered in some fashion.

An SI sportswriter speculated about an M’s-Royals trade with Merrifield & Marco Gonzales being the key pieces. Do you think Seattle would really part with Marco?
Mark P
10:24
I think the bigger question is "do you think KC would really part with Merrifield," and the answer is no.  I also doubt the M's would move Gonzales, for that matter.

How deep is Cincinnati trying to cut their payroll. Are they going to try to attach Moose and or Suarez to another more value piece simply to rid themselves of the financial commitment
Mark P
10:26
I suspect they'd be happy to get rid of either contract if they could, and attaching prospects might be the only way to do it (besides a bad contract swap).  Then again, if you're the Reds and might be facing a soft rebuild anyway, it would equally hurt to give away prospects in this fashion
Guardians
10:27
With the name change, shouldn’t the Guardians expect in uptick in revenue from the sale of the new merchandise? Could we expect them to be more players in the mid-tier free agents?
Mark P
10:28
A bump in merchandise sales certainly seems likely, but it depends on whether or not ownership will re-invest that money into payroll, or use it to cover revenue losses from the pandemic.

You'd think the team would like to make some kind of splash to kick off the Guardians era.

Am I an extension candidate?
Mark P
10:30
Most definitely.  I would think the Cards will be having some talks with TON's reps to see if a deal can get done.

10:30
Why can't TB Rays move to Nashville TN or one of the Carolinas? Time to resolve the lingering stadium and attendance issues.
Mark P
10:31
That would seem to make a lot more sense to me than this wacky Tampa/Montreal split plan.  I think one of the issues is that Nashville already has a prospective ownership group lined up, and it doesn't seem like Sternberg actually wants to sell the team.

Why did the Reds waiver Wade Miley, and why were no big teams interested in him?
Mark P
10:33
It's quite possible some contenders were interested in him, but the Cubs were earlier on the waiver wire.

10:33
Do you think Gardner retires with Aaron Hicks taking over his 4th outfielder role moving forward? Yankees would seem to be prime team that should target Starling Marte.
Mark P
10:34
Gardner has said he's planning to return in 2022, and until I see evidence to the contrary, I will always just assume he'll return to the Yankees.  Hicks would be a pretty pricey fourth outfielder.

10:35
More action this winter or more of the same? Lowest payroll in the league and they have been top 10 before.
Mark P
10:36
Pretty much more of the same, but after the O's were hurting so much for pitching last year, I can see them spending a bit more to bring in a couple of veteran arms.  It doesn't help the development of the younger guys, after all, if they're being overworked or used in unfamiliar starting situations.

Are we best server targeting short term SP upgrades like Wood for 2 years or a 4-6 year deal for someone like ERod?
Mark P
10:36
I mean....why not both?  Detroit has plenty of payroll room to spare.

Is the Mets' front office search truly a mess, or is that just a media narrative at this point?
Mark P
10:40
It is pretty unusual to see so many names outright decline to even be interviewed, but we also haven't heard that much about anyone who has gotten an interview to this point.

I do think the Mets are in some ways their worst enemy in generating bad headlines, like boldly trying to go after Beane/Epstein/Stearns when there was zero to no chance any of those guys were taking the job.  While "it can't hurt to ask," it also doesn't look great when the team immediately starts their search with three big names saying no

The Guardians will be guarding last place for the near future,
Mark P
10:42
Hard disagree.  They need to add a bat or two, but if so, I can see them winning the AL Central in 2022
